The Republic's Gethsemane

A grand allegorical picture sheweth a woman wrapp'd in tatter'd folds of the American flag, reclining upon the National Mall. Her wind-tossed auburn locks stream forth as she lifteth her eyes heavenward, her visage wrought with anguish and desperate supplication. One hand presseth her breast; the other reacheth toward a rent in the tempestuous clouds. Behind her the Washington Monument riseth 'neath a turbulent sky of towering clouds, sunbeams, and far-off lightning. The Capitol's dome appeareth upon the horizon, half hid by rain and mist. Small figures betoken the vastness of the place. The flag that enwraps her serveth as symbolic vesture, making of her a personification of the nation itself. Rich painterly hues and the contrast 'twixt light and darkness make a mighty meditation upon national crisis, resilience, and hope amidst turmoil.

Karma? “Donald Trump’s plans to celebrate the US’s 250th birthday with “the greatest show of all” in the heart of Washington DC were disrupted on a Saturday evening by fears of a thunderstorm.” {The Guardian 4 July}
