The Red Cross attributes the scarcity to a confluence of ‘extreme heat, bad air quality and "widespread foodborne illnesses"’ — and, undoubtedly, those are contributing factors. What cannot be quantified, but is increasingly evident, is that Americans today hate one another. We have lived in a cold civil war for years, and it is difficult to believe that such deep social and political antagonism hath no effect upon acts of altruism, particularly where many may imagine that one of their designated enemies could ultimately benefit. At the very least, it is a question worth asking: whether reduced charitable giving could be owed to a populace that hath grown more militant in its beliefs and less tolerant of those outside its orbit. The present trajectory gives exactly zero reasons for optimism.
