Psychic warfare: a jeremiad on why the advertising industry in the former United States demands drastic reform

image generated via Google Gemini

For the sake of mankind, stringent and rational constraints have to, starting yesterday, be imposed upon the American advertising industry (and probably elsewhere, too). Indeed, what is needed is nothing less than an entirely new model, for the televisual advertising apparatus has leapt too many proverbial sharks to be reformed or redeemed. The sheer cacophony and inanity to which one is subjected merely to watch a ball game—or most any broadcast at all—is increasingly intolerable, yet the American public, as with so much else, remains insensate to the psychic warfare daily waged upon them in the service of crony capitalism. (‘Crony’ is the operative word; I am no foe of capitalism per se, but we long ago surpassed the point at which the beast required taming and proper stewardship.)

Yes—psychic warfare it is, with the populace as its unresisting casualties. Every operative of the advertising agencies might well deserve committal, so relentless is the idiocy they have strewn across our airwaves and into our very consciousness over decades. Pure f**king garbage, in layman’s terms.

Does anyone ever pause to reflect upon the sheer juvenility and absurdity of roughly ninety-five per cent of these advertisements? Is there no one—besides myself—who yearns for a quieter, more decorous and properly ordered nation and world? Must we truly profess such affection for the prattling gecko, the mawkish caveman, the washed-up sitcom geeks in the T-Mobile spots, or that benighted emu and his handler Doug, along with the countless other inanities to which we are ceaselessly subjected? Do we not care that so many of the songs which accompanied our coming of age have been debased into mere marketing jingles?

A less intrusive, more humane model of advertising must be forged, though, as with so much else, I fear we are already too far gone to rescue ourselves from the abyss. —Arthur Newhook, 1 October 2025.

TV ads mirror America's growing anti-intellectualism—a society that scorns reason and celebrates ignorance, ripe for charlatans

Bloody hell, these accursed TV ads are one day going to drive me away from watching most any sports, or anything else on television, period. Mind you, it says all that needs to be known about the state of things: advertisers know full well their craft—holding up a mirror to society and then forcing it down our gullets. And what a pitiful, foolish, and infantile reflection it is.

Look at the state of us. Take a look around and see what doth stir folk to excitement these days. Absolute rubbish! Anything requiring half a brain cell, and the masses of #Murica turn away, unbothered and unmoved. To varying degrees, Americans have ever harboured disdain for intellectualism, yet never in my years—nay, perchance never in the annals of US history—hath this contempt burned so fiercely as in the past decade of Donald Trump being the central character in this Shakespearean tragedy. A nation of wilful ignorance and base spite, bereft of logic, reason, intelligence, empathy, or honour, shall ever prove easy prey for charlatans and scoundrels. It is futile to ask when this lamentable state of affairs will come to an end, for should anyone attempt to bring it to a close, the American people will fight tooth and nail to preserve that which they hold most dear—ignorance and unearned pride. Hence, why Donald Trump is about to be (figurehead) president once more.

‘A Massachusetts father and son were sentenced Monday in federal court to prison time after being found guilty of what prosecutors called a "ten-percenting" scheme involving dozens of convenience stores’

Jesse Costa/WBUR

As one who used to sell lottery tickets, the Massachusetts State Lottery is far more trouble than it has ever been worth. Sure, the schools get extra money, yadda yadda yadda, but the Lottery creates enough crime and addiction to offset whatever positive benefits it brings. Gambling ruin lives, and I saw and heard of some horror stories. The same, of course, can be said of alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes, television, pornography, and so forth, and we all (should) know that just banning things has never been a feasible solution. Yet while the state government regulates those other vices, the Lottery is unique in that it is a wholly state-run ‘sin stock’ enterprise. State and local governments have no place policing the morals of private individuals and enterprising, but what legitimate place do they have in actively promoting vice and enabling people to recklessly burn money? {WCVB 5/22}
