Empire of delusions

A darkly fantastical political allegory casts Iceland as a commanding, armour-clad woman amid a frozen volcanic landscape, physically chastising a distressed, nude blonde figure representing MAGA America. Behind them, an enormous American-flag palace hangs precariously above icy waters, its grand approach leading towards an empty golden throne and council table. Fractured maps, crowns, chessboards, volcanic fissures and grotesque monuments suggest imperial delusion, geopolitical gamesmanship and national disintegration. Beneath an aurora-lit full moon, the collision of Icelandic ice, American heraldry and infernal fire gives the scene the atmosphere of a macabre fairy tale about arrogance encountering unexpectedly forceful resistance.

Iceland doth summon the US ambassador following Trump’s cartographic antics. {The New Republic 8 September}

So thoroughly blinded by choler, and so resolute to impose themselves as lords and masters over all the Western world — mark me well, I say not the whole world, so deferential are they unto Putin, Xi, Modi, Netanyahu, that funny-looking fellow in Argentina, and others of their illiberal ilk — the acolytes within the #MAGA movement shall never come to comprehend that they wound the United States of America, and themselves besides, far more grievously than they wound the Europeans, the Canadians, and perchance our friends beneath the Southern Cross as well.

The hurt done unto America’s collective reputation and international standing is beyond all reckoning. These #MAGA folk do fancy that Trump playeth some wondrous game of ‘4D chess’, and that all these other countries stand duly chastened before him, even whilst those selfsame nations, in effect, kindly bid him go hang. President Joe Biden laboured to restore America’s honour abroad following Trump’s first reign of terror; whereupon the citizenry of the country chose to confound all over again — and considerably worse than in the former bout. In the end — and should aught be left standing — Americans shall find little to relish in the fruits of universal ostracism. One need only enquire of the Russian people as to what such isolation portends.

More reputable American presidents may yet emerge hereafter, or they may not; but the fundamental matter at hand concerns the reputation of a nation’s people. We are not one people, alas, nor are we a ‘nation’ in any coherent sense, but rather an unsustainable empire presently crumbling about us.

To every American who hath repeatedly voted for this deranged and highly compromised man: y’all’s reputations lie in tatters, for having enabled so sickly a state of affairs. By all means, however, continue laughing as Trump ‘triggers’ the world at large. The joke is upon you, #Murica.

FTA: President Trump has drawn the ire of Iceland after posting a map depicting the country as part of the United States.

Along with Iceland, the image also included Canada, Greenland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean draped in the U.S. flag. The Truth Social post, made on Labor Day, was captionless.

The post—paternalistic at best, colonial at worst—raised enough alarm in Iceland to lead the country’s foreign minister, Thorgerdur Gunnarsdóttir, to summon U.S. Ambassador Billy Long. Gunnarsdóttir later told RUV, Iceland’s national broadcasting service, that “it was made clear at the meeting that the post was completely inappropriate.” Other Icelandic leaders felt similarly, comparing their experience to that of Greenland, which Trump has threatened to annex since he returned to office.

“It is not good to be an enemy of the United States, but it is even worse to be its friend,” alternate city councilor Stefán Pálsson told RUV.

Ink on water

A richly detailed satirical illustration depicts a fantastical confrontation between Canada and the United States over an icy northern lake. At centre, a pale, silver-haired woman in a translucent turquoise gown stands defiantly amid the water before towering glaciers and snowbound mountains. Canadian flags, Parliament-like architecture, a moose and a scarf-clad goose occupy the left, while the American side is crowded with factories, cargo, officials and an Uncle Sam caricature operating an elaborate bureaucratic machine. An enormous suited hand reaches from above with a fountain pen, attempting to rename or redraw the contested water in black ink. Eagles circle overhead, while chains of red, white and blue buoys divide the lake, turning sovereignty and territorial pretension into dark political farce.

Unholy toddler Trump renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' in trade war tantrum, as Canada models response to possible US invasion. {The Independent 27 August}

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-rename-lake-ontario-america-canada-b3040577.html

Are we tired of living in the Twilight Zone yet?

FTA: Trump had teased the troll-ish renaming order in a video posted to TikTok earlier this week.

In the video, he displayed a map of the Great Lakes and suggested he would do exactly what he did on Thursday.

“We’re gonna make a little change; we’re gonna call it something different than Lake Ontario,” the 80-year-old president said. “We’re gonna call it Lake America. And all it takes is a good pen and some intelligence.”

Trump, a former real estate mogul with a penchant for branding, then used a Sharpie to cross out the lake’s name and write “LAKE AMERICA” above it.

His geographic broadside at America’s northern neighbor is the latest episode in a series of events that have brought the close relationship between the two countries to a nadir.

According to The Globe and Mail, Canadian defense forces have begun modeling a response to a hypothetical U.S. invasion for the first time in more than a century.

Since taking office last January, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire Canada, which he described on multiple occasions as “the 51st state.” And in recent weeks, he’s reportedly turned his attention back to Canada, fixating on the country’s “vulnerability” to foreign adversaries in its Arctic reaches.

At the same time, the 79-year-old president has made clear his desire to take control of Greenland, a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, another NATO ally. The White House, which says it needs Greenland for purposes of national security, sees several options to achieve this goal, including the use of military force.

Elon threatens the United Kingdom, and NOW is the time to put a full stop to this madness

I can scarcely marshal coherent thought—such is the magnitude of my astonishment and anger at this moment in time. President-elect Musk and his ignominious orange marionette, acting in concert with other shadowy forces (Putin), are now brazenly threatening to invade and annex not merely Canada and Greenland, but also the United Kingdom. And how do we in America respond? By somnambulating into submission, placated by the (false) promises of cheap fuel, eggs, or whatever trivial justification prompted so many to cast their ballots—so they thought—for Donald Trump. And what, I ask, is President Biden doing in response? Assert your authority whilst it yet remains, Mr President! Arrest Elon Musk forthwith—he is a menace to humanity and a terrorist. Should any American dare to lay hands upon Great Britain, I shall defend my ancestral homeland to the very death! God Save the King, you fascist pigs!

About Trump’s quip—if indeed it was that—regarding the sovereign nation of Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States

Photo: BBC

NBC News: Trump mocks the 'Great State of Canada'

Were Canada to be incorporated into the United States, either as a singular political entity or, more plausibly, as multiple federal states, the resultant nation would surpass Russia in geographical extent. Moreover, were Canada to be admitted as a unified state, it would immediately become the most populous among all American states, slightly exceeding California's total.

Canada is not Rhode Island or Delaware, and whilst considerable portions of its territory remain sparsely populated, its population substantially exceeds that of Alaska. Regardless of whether the Orange Puppet’s proposition was intended in jest, the hypothetical absorption of Canada would constitute a monumentally complex undertaking, even presuming the acquiescence of the Canadian populace—which, one might assert with considerable confidence, would not be forthcoming. Quebec, in particular, would be problematic in that regard. There is also the matter of Canada being a Commonwealth nation and recognising His Majesty as King.

Canada stands as America's sister nation, formidable in every conceivable way, and is deserving of commensurate respect, honour, and dignity. Indeed, Trump’s previous facetious (or not facetious, whichever it was) suggestions regarding the acquisition of Greenland were inappropriate enough; serious matters of sovereignty and international relations ought not to be the subject of ill-conceived attempts at humour by one whose office demands the utmost gravitas. Thou art not a comedian, Mr Trump; cease pretending to be one.

Naturally, we have yet to address the genuine locus of power within this impending regime, nor said locus’ aspirations for global domination. For the moment, however, we shall content ourselves with the assumption that Trump, the Orange Puppet, was merely being his charming self when discussing our noble neighbours to the north.
