The first cracks in the supply

Harbingers of what is to come: isolated diesel shortages are now being reported in the former United States. {Newsweek 17 September}

https://www.newsweek.com/some-gas-stations-out-of-diesel-as-prices-surge-12454753

FTA: Photos appearing to show gas stations running out of diesel have spread across social media as U.S. fuel prices climb to record highs, but industry data does not currently show any widespread shortages.

One image posted on X showed a station in North Texas displaying an "out of diesel" notice. Another post on X said a station in Orlando, Florida, had also run out.

The images arrive as concerns grow over the availability and cost of diesel as global supplies tighten due to the ongoing U.S.-Israel war in Iran, which has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important shipping routes through which about one-fifth of global petroleum consumption normally passes. Vessel traffic has fallen sharply owing to the fighting and attacks on regional energy infrastructure since the war was launched on February 28.

However, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, cautioned against interpreting individual stations as evidence of national shortages.

"GasBuddy is not seeing any high level outages in our data, nor through our Pay with GasBuddy card," De Haan wrote on X, adding that current shortages remained within normal levels.

In a second post, De Haan warned of "false alarmists" spreading claims that stations are widely running out of diesel.

Individual stations can temporarily run short for a number of reasons, including high local demand or delays in fuel deliveries. GasBuddy's nationwide data indicates that, at least for now, the incidents being shared online remain isolated. For now, there is an increasingly tight and expensive diesel market, but not a nationwide wave of gas stations running out of fuel.

De Haan told Newsweek that reports of outages posted on social media should be taken with a "grain of salt" and that there is "lots of misinformation that is being misinterpreted or elevated."

The papers still fly

A richly painterly illustration depicts a brunette woman seated barefoot upon a cluttered wooden desk in a shadowy academic office at night. She wears an oversized cream shirt loosely draped from one shoulder, with one knee raised as she gazes calmly towards the viewer. Warm lamplight illuminates her figure, an open notebook, scattered papers, spectacles, cameras and coffee mugs, contrasting with the deep blue moonlight beyond tall open windows. Loose sheets appear to flutter through the room on a nocturnal breeze. Outside, beneath a luminous full moon, the Gothic towers of a university campus rise among dark trees, their glowing windows reinforcing the scholarly setting and atmosphere of hard-won intellectual freedom.

Federal judge rules the Trump regime cannot deport foreign-born students for being critical of Israel. {AP 29 August}

https://apnews.com/article/israel-protests-deportations-ideological-d3694ba08ab714eb9441ca51a83fa57f

FTA: Judge Noël Wise, in a ruling Friday, delivered a victory for The Stanford Daily, the student newspaper at Stanford University, which has said some international students were afraid to speak out because of the deportation threat.

“Freedom of speech is illusory if we are only ‘free’ to express complementary views about the government and its leaders,” the judge wrote.

The decision largely piggybacks on findings from nearly a year ago by a U.S. district judge in Boston, who ruled that the Trump administration violated the Constitution when it targeted people who are not citizens for deportation solely for supporting Palestinians and criticizing Israel.

Wise wrote that the freedoms of speech and the press are “foundational to America’s enduring democracy.” The judge cited free-speech and vagueness flaws that violate the First Amendment and Fifth Amendment as she struck down portions of the provisions that the federal government follows regarding deportations.

Wise cited retaliation in March 2025 by U.S. immigration authorities against people who engaged in speech supporting the Palestinians and against Israel’s actions — which a growing number of experts, including those commissioned by a U.N. body, have said amount to genocide. The judge also cited retaliation against people who were critical of Charlie Kirk after the Turning Point USA co-founder was assassinated last September.

“Tomorrow, or perhaps even today, targets may include anyone in the United States who exercises their freedom of speech to simply express opinions the government does not like,” the judge in San Jose said.

“This downward spiral is antithetical to our Constitution that recognizes our right to speak freely,” she added. “Here you can simultaneously hate the content of a person’s speech and love the country that cherishes the freedom to allow it. Zealous protection of our Constitutional right to free speech is a provocative demonstration of our country’s powerful lack of fear.”

The Justice Department did not respond Saturday to a message seeking comment on the decision.

Development at the edge of Eden

A richly detailed fantasy illustration juxtaposes sublime wilderness with encroaching development beneath an immense ringed planet. In the foreground, a dark-haired woman in a revealing, windblown black dress and thigh-high stockings stands barefoot upon a rocky ledge, extending one hand towards the viewer. Towering redwoods, deer and a waterfall frame the pristine valley behind her. Across a dramatic chasm, heavy machinery, cranes and unfinished buildings consume a scarred mountainside amid smoke and excavated earth. At lower right, an enormous suited hand hovers over architectural plans and stacks of money, suggesting powerful financial interests directing the destruction. A luminous celestial trail winds through the valley towards the stars.

“The political pressure being brought to bear is very unusual.” Trump eager to sell off land around Yosemite to developers. {The Telegraph 28 August}

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/d13546c1f3d93ab2

FTA: Donald Trump is reportedly considering selling off land in Yosemite National Park to a developer.

National Park Service staff were under pressure to transfer a quarter-mile strip of land inside the park to Kingsbarn Realty Capital, a real estate private equity firm, sources told Notus.

The plan has provoked alarm that Yosemite, the 1,200-square-mile park renowned for its granite cliffs and waters, which has been protected under legislation first signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1864, could be sold off for development.

“The political pressure being brought to bear is very unusual,” a person familiar with discussions within the administration told Notus.

Kingsbarn, according to government documents seen by the outlet, plans to develop two 40-acre parcels of land outside the park, located around five miles from one of its ancient sequoia groves, and build a road connecting the property to one of Yosemite’s main thoroughfares.

The road would give the company private access to the park that is otherwise almost entirely surrounded by national forests.

Kingsbarn would in return buy land of equivalent value, either near Yosemite or elsewhere in California, and hand it to the Park Service.

The entire US power grid is at substantial risk for a major blackout that could last as long as eighteen months. {Advance Local 20 August}

https://www.nj.com/news/2026/08/us-power-grid-at-risk-of-18-month-blackout-1-city-now-in-dark-for-more-than-a-week.html

Every facet of our lives would fundamentally change if the entire nation were to be deprived of electrical power for any extended duration. That is to say, those among us who would still remain alive to witness it: millions upon millions would perish in the interval. One would suddenly find oneself living within an entirely alien paradigm from what exists presently, and those who endured would emerge from the ordeal fundamentally transformed in every fibre of their being. The possibility of such an event no longer belongs solely to the realm of science fiction, if indeed it ever genuinely did. Our whole civilisation hath been erected upon a proverbial house of cards, and, sooner or later, the deck is going to collapse.

FTA: The United States power grid is at risk of a major blackout that could last up to 18 months, according to a new report. Concerns are heightened as one U.S. city has been without power for more than a week.

Jon Wellinghoff, former chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), told The New York Times Magazine that America’s aging infrastructure is badly outdated and potentially vulnerable to a coordinated attack. He first raised the alarm in 2013 after gunmen shot up 17 transformers at an electrical substation near San Jose, California

Wellinghoff said the FERC did an analysis that determined the U.S. power grid could be seriously disrupted if similar incidents targeted the 10 most important substations in the country’s three sections: Western, Eastern and Texas Interconnections. Substations are where multiple high-volate (sic) lines meet, routing electricity between power plants, transmission lines, and local neighborhoods

“We came up with some very astounding numbers,” Wellinghoff told the publication. “If you knock out nine total substations along those three grids, you can black out the entire United States.”

Wellinghoff added that it didn’t matter which nine substations were hit, as long as they were among the 10 most important in its respective region. He told the NYT Magazine that even 12-year-olds could find them with a map on the internet, and anyone with enough guns could destroy them in 20 minutes.

Drought’s harvest

A macabre editorial illustration depicts a dark-haired woman balancing barefoot upon a chair as enormous mosquitoes swarm around her in a parched, desolate landscape. Wearing a light summer dress, she raises an insect repellent aerosol while recoiling anxiously from the approaching insects. Stagnant pools and an ornate fountain provide breeding grounds, while crows and wading birds gather beneath twisted, leafless trees. A grotesque sun overlooks the scene as countless mosquitoes fill the dusty sky, transforming an ordinary summer nuisance into an ominous allegory of mosquito-borne disease and the expanding threat of West Nile virus.

West Nile virus surges in #Murica; drought concentrates mosquitoes around shrinking pools of water, raising risk of transmission. {The Independent 18 August}

https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/west-nile-virus-mosquito-cases-deaths-us-b3034893.html

Counter-intuitive though it may seem, drought increases transmission by concentrating mosquitoes and birds around ever-shrinking water sources.

FTA: The majority of cases occur in the summer, when warm and west conditions are at their peak.

While mosquitoes thrive in these conditions, experts say climate change-driven drought in Arizona and across the West has actually helped the disease spread.

Drought means that mosquitoes breed around smaller bodies of water, giving more opportunity for the virus to spread between them.

“Drought conditions can paradoxically increase West Nile virus transmission because it concentrates mosquitoes and birds (West Nile virus is a bird virus, first) around shrinking water sources, increasing transmission risk,” Matthew Aliota, a professor at the University of Minnesota, who specializes in these kinds of viruses, previously told The Independent.

Empty cupboards, heavy hearts

A warmly lit mid-century-style illustration shows a tall dark-haired woman comforting a much smaller blonde woman in a modest vintage kitchen. The taller woman, dressed in a cream cable-knit jumper and short beige skirt, wraps both arms protectively around the younger woman, gently cradling the back of her head as she stares ahead with quiet concern. The petite blonde, wearing a pink gingham summer dress and white sandals, buries her tear-streaked face against the taller woman's chest, clutching her tightly in visible distress. Around them, an old-fashioned refrigerator stands open with only a few basic items inside, while ration coupons and loose notes are scattered across the chrome-edged kitchen table beside a mixing bowl, suggesting growing financial hardship. Floral curtains, enamel cookware, worn cupboards, and soft afternoon sunlight reinforce the nostalgic domestic atmosphere, contrasting with the emotional weight of the embrace.

Ageing infrastructure is lethal infrastructure: witness the conflagration at a 114-year-old Californian oil refinery

Los Angeles Times

Residents described experiencing seismic-level alarm:

The El Segundo refinery, built in 1911, is Chevron's second largest in the US and produces 285,000 barrels of crude oil every day.

It supplies a fifth of all motor vehicle fuels and 40% of the jet fuel consumed in southern California, Reuters reported.

El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel said firefighters were able to respond immediately to the blast.

"Our station is about a .25 mile away from the gates of Chevron," Pimentel told reporters. "Obviously, we are very concerned, and there is a lot of investigative work to be done to see what has happened."

The blaze was visible as far as Los Angeles and filled the air nearby with the smell of petrol.

In addition to investigating the explosion, officials in the city of El Segundo said they are monitoring air quality levels for signs of pollution.

One nearby resident, Mark Rogers, told the Los Angeles Times that the blast was startling for people nearby.

"I thought we got nuked or something," Mr Rogers told the local newspaper. Another resident, Keith Mohr, said the flames looked like they were "300-foot".

"I didn't know if a plane crashed or there was an earthquake or both," he said.

{BBC News 3 October} ‘Massive fire at Chevron refinery in California contained, officials say’

{alternate text for the above image} A dramatic night-time photograph shows the El Segundo oil refinery in California engulfed in flames during the early hours of 3 October 2025. Vast plumes of orange fire and black smoke billow skyward, staining the low clouds and casting a sulphurous glow over the sprawling industrial complex. Illuminated stacks, tanks, and pipelines stand silhouetted against the inferno, their skeletal frames stark in the blaze’s glare. Emergency lights flicker across the grounds below, dwarfed by the scale of the conflagration, while the lights of Los Angeles shimmer faintly in the distance. The image captures both the raw power of industrial catastrophe and the precarious fragility of infrastructure under fire.

About Trump’s quip—if indeed it was that—regarding the sovereign nation of Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States

Photo: BBC

NBC News: Trump mocks the 'Great State of Canada'

Were Canada to be incorporated into the United States, either as a singular political entity or, more plausibly, as multiple federal states, the resultant nation would surpass Russia in geographical extent. Moreover, were Canada to be admitted as a unified state, it would immediately become the most populous among all American states, slightly exceeding California's total.

Canada is not Rhode Island or Delaware, and whilst considerable portions of its territory remain sparsely populated, its population substantially exceeds that of Alaska. Regardless of whether the Orange Puppet’s proposition was intended in jest, the hypothetical absorption of Canada would constitute a monumentally complex undertaking, even presuming the acquiescence of the Canadian populace—which, one might assert with considerable confidence, would not be forthcoming. Quebec, in particular, would be problematic in that regard. There is also the matter of Canada being a Commonwealth nation and recognising His Majesty as King.

Canada stands as America's sister nation, formidable in every conceivable way, and is deserving of commensurate respect, honour, and dignity. Indeed, Trump’s previous facetious (or not facetious, whichever it was) suggestions regarding the acquisition of Greenland were inappropriate enough; serious matters of sovereignty and international relations ought not to be the subject of ill-conceived attempts at humour by one whose office demands the utmost gravitas. Thou art not a comedian, Mr Trump; cease pretending to be one.

Naturally, we have yet to address the genuine locus of power within this impending regime, nor said locus’ aspirations for global domination. For the moment, however, we shall content ourselves with the assumption that Trump, the Orange Puppet, was merely being his charming self when discussing our noble neighbours to the north.

Aghast British broadcaster: ‘The Republican Party have embraced the AR-15 as their mascot.’ The Christofascist takeover of America is underway, and with it divorce from the Western world

Karen Bleier/AFP/Getty Images/USA Today

{VIDEO} British broadcaster Anthony Davis responds to the Highland Park shooting - ‘The Republican Party have embraced the AR-15 as their mascot.’ Americans should see how the free, civilized world sees this country right now. Once, America led the free world, but now many are in denial that this is no longer the case. Not that most Americans care how the world sees them - in fact, Americans tend to only become more jingoistic the more they are called out on their pathetic jingoism. One of the results of this extreme rhetoric and brainwashing is that America is growing apart from Europe and the Western world; when the American people return the radicalized GOP to congressional majorities this November and then restore Trump (or install a DeSantis or similar type) as dictator in two years, our alliance with the free world comes to an official end. In fact, I fully expect that American Christofacsists, in time, are going to begin calling for a modern-day Crusades to ‘liberate’ Europe from Satanism, or Communism, or whatever garbage is used as an excuse. America is crumbling quickly and Fascism is rising at an alarming pace. Either President Joe Biden takes drastic action to attempt to save this republic, or it is gone; forget about trusting most of our fellow Americans to do the right thing, they are a lost cause.

Even if this republic is somehow held together and Fascism is defeated, we’ll never again have the prosperity we once knew domestically, or anywhere near the level of respect and deference on the global stage. The hallmarks of the post-war global order will not be reclaimed; the new Fascist state is emerging, but as with Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s Italy, it will collapse before too long; eventually, the union is likely to be dissolved and broken up into many smaller states. Large numbers of us are going to be dead before it completely collapses. Putting it bluntly, Europe, Asia, etc., are ‘over’ our bulls**t and are moving on. Like an jilted love that refuses to let go, Fascist America - or #Murica - will grow more aggressive and hostile the more isolated it becomes. Just as with Russia, or taken to the extreme, North Korea. Hermit kingdoms that offer nothing but misery and death. Putin’s Russia may be one of #Murica’s only allies once the Fascist takeover is complete. I pray that at least some sane Americans will be able to escape this nightmare, and find new, more welcoming homes elsewhere. To that end, I pray the Fascist alliance does not destroy the entire planet, and that there will be an ‘elsewhere’ to go. Just know that once Fascist Americans finish annihilating their domestic enemies they are not going to want to stop there. Bloodlust is addictive, and therein will lay #Murica’s eventually downfall; the free world and its governments must prepare now. (MeidasTouch 7/07)

Katherine Stewart: Christian nationalists are excited about what comes next - ‘(M)ovement leaders are already preparing for a new and more brutal phase of their assault on individual rights and democratic self-governance. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to step aside, will stay in office until the Tories pick a new leader - Imagine that, a country that still demands character and will hold its leaders accountable. And, for all his flaws, Boris Johnson could not possibly have done 1/1000th of the evil Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and other tyrants around the world have. A great orator who stood by Ukraine and against Putin; he was also either the very first or one of the first to publicly congratulate Joe Biden and acknowledge the man as the rightful winner of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, much to the chagrin of the American right. The major concern now for Great Britain and the entire world is which direction the Conservative Party heads in, and who they choose as leader. If they go the route of the GOP and other right-wing parties that are embracing the revival of Fascism, then the United Kingdom is in a lot of trouble. Boris Johnson may have some serious flaws, but what comes next, in his absence, may be catastrophic; I would not be celebrating his impending exit. (NPR 7/07)

Capitulating to COVID and getting shot down in the streets and in the aisles of supermarkets: Just another weekend in #Murica

Shannon Stapleton/Reuters

I reject the populist notion that ‘the people’ - in very general terms and never including disfavored groups - are sacrosanct and ‘good’ just by virtue of existing. So what if you’ve worked hard in life, if you’re a Fascist a**hole, or otherwise deluded into a belief system I do not follow, then I do not want you governing me. Period. Truth be told, most people are not good people, as we can see from the sordid headlines below. Hard truth about life, but the most necessary one.

Eric Topol: The COVID capitulation: As the virus accelerates its evolution, humans retrogress - Excerpt: ‘The United States is now in the midst of a new wave related to Omicron variants BA.2 and BA.2.12.1 with over 90,000 confirmed new cases a day and a 20% increase in hospitalizations in the past 2 weeks. That belies the real toll of the current wave, since most people with symptoms are testing at home or not testing at all; there is essentially no testing for asymptomatic cases. The real number of cases is likely at least 500,000 per day, far greater than any of the US prior waves except Omicron. The bunk that cases are not important is preposterous. They are infections that beget more cases, they beget Long Covid, they beget sickness, hospitalizations and deaths. They are also the underpinning of new variants.’ (Ground Truths 5/15)

A country going to Hell in a handbasket: Hasidic Jew brutally assaulted in NYC, and extremism becomes the ‘new normal’ in #Murica

Josh Edelson/AFP/Getty Images

The ‘traditional’ crowd on Twitter and across social media. Ultra-right-wing, ultra-nationalist (some even adopting the ‘Fascist’ label), openly racist, misogynist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, and basically calling for anyone who doesn’t think like them to be made to conform - always implicitly suggested, but the language now is becoming more direct and blatant. Yearning for a glorious past that was never as glorious or as simple as they imagine. So willing to wage hell on earth in order to enforce this return to antiquity. So zealous of their ‘free speech,’ yet so eager and willing to impose ideological purity on all. In whole, more than a tad scary that all these fringe groups on the extremes are more influential than they've, perhaps, ever been in America. At least since the 1930s, and there were periods of extremism throughout the 19th and early 20th Centuries. The stakes have never been higher, and one who downplays the threat of political extremism does so at our peril.

Extremism is coming from all directions in the U.S. today, but the nationalist populist/neo-Fascist contingent is the most numerous of these fringe factions, all of whom are dangerous; after the insurrection of January 6, 2021, they have become the most dangerous and most serious in their intentions. Without question, they are the most conspiracy-minded, and the ones most given to cultism. And ask any of them, and every single one will say we’re all the crazy ones and they are sane. How is greater society ever going to reason with these people, especially as they become a greater percentage of the overall population? How are we going to even continue to have a civil society when everybody hates each other and nobody can agree on what reality is? We’re doomed, and it’s the very people who believe they are saving us - populists, religious zealots, cable TV talking heads, white supremacists, black nationalists, neo-Marxists, etc. - and their many acolytes that are showing themselves to be our undoing.

Calculated cruelty in the new, post-COVID America. Empathy and compassion not allowed, your very life no longer matters

Chen Mengtong/China News Service via Getty Images

If America was not an evil nation before, it is now. More to the point, the American people are evil. A massive, highly successful gaslighting campaign is ongoing to desensitize Americans to the horror all around them. Borderline eugenics. This is only the beginning of the inhumanity to come. Via Scientific American -

Sometime in the next few weeks, the official death toll for the two-year COVID pandemic in the U.S. will reach one million. Despite being the wealthiest nation on the planet, the U.S. has continued to have the most COVID infections and deaths per country, by far, and it has the highest per capita death rate of any wealthy nation.

This is an unfathomable number of people dead, yet, mass media are downplaying it. This is despite an empathetic New York Times headline in May 2020 of “U.S. Deaths Near 100,000, an Incalculable Loss,” and using its entire front page to print names of some of the deceased. As Luppe B. Luppen noted on Twitter, the newspaper’s more recent headline was the cruel and callous “900,000 Dead, but Many Americans Move On.”

The Times is not alone; several large mainstream publications, in complicity with politicians of both major political parties, have been beating a death knell of a drum for getting “back to normal” for months. The effect is the manufactured consent to normalize mass death and suffering—to subtly suggest to Americans that they want to move on.

News media are helping to shape public opinion in order for business to return to the very circumstances that have created this ongoing crisis. A return to normal will allow profits to be reaped by people working relatively safely from their homes (the target audience of many news organizations’ advertisers) at the expense of people working or studying in person who are more vulnerable.

A few weeks ago, David Leonhardt, the writer of the Times’ newsletter “The Morning,” asked Michael Barbaro, the host of the company’s podcast “The Daily”: “If [COVID] is starting to look like a regular respiratory virus, is it rational [emphasis by the Times] to treat it like something completely different— to disrupt all our lives in all these big and consequential ways[?]”

I was dismayed. That rhetorical move is a familiar one to me: Two white men frame what they think is rational, deeming any questioning of their stand as irrational.

Meanwhile, some 140,000 children in the U.S. have lost a caregiver—about one in every 500 children. That is a big and consequential loss, and those children are probably not among the many who are ready to “move on” (another nearly one million Americans can’t move on because they’re already dead). During this pandemic, Black people have been disproportionately killed by this virus. About 50,000 people have died each month of COVID, meaning several Black children are being orphaned by SARS-CoV-2 this month, as you read this.

So is it rational? To be calling for the end of life-saving mitigation efforts and saying they harm children when so many have been orphaned here and worldwide? (Read more)

U.S. records its lowest population growth in the nation’s history during the pandemic; Deaths outnumber births in more than two dozen states

AP - US population growth at lowest rate in pandemic’s first year

In the long run, fewer mouths to feed and fewer people to cause problems in the United States would be a net positive for the planet, though will likely be offset by the uncontrolled and unacceptable levels of population growth in places like India, Africa, and other poverty-stricken backwaters of the world. There is a (very humane) reason we spade and neuter our cats and dogs, and necessity demands we will soon have no recourse but to apply the same to humans. Make no mistake, there are going to be some severe issues that result from lower birth rates in the U.S. – some are already present – but overpopulation will eventually lead to humankind’s demise. -

U.S. population growth dipped to its lowest rate since the nation’s founding during the first year of the pandemic as the coronavirus curtailed immigration, delayed pregnancies and killed hundreds of thousands of U.S. residents, according to figures released Tuesday.

The United States grew by only 0.1%, with an additional 392,665 added to the U.S. population from July 2020 to July 2021, bringing the nation’s count to 331.8 million people, according to population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The U.S. has been experiencing slow population growth for years but the pandemic exacerbated that trend. This past year was the first time since 1937 that the nation’s population grew by less than 1 million people. (Read more)

Some encouraging news concerning the severity of Omicron, but the overall outlook is bleak

AFP

Authorities in the United Kingdom report that the Omicron variant appears to cause up to 70% fewer hospitalizations than the previous Delta variant of COVID, and global financial markets expressed a little bit of relief on Thursday. Still, the rate of transmission is higher than with previous strains, and the number of new infections continues to soar, while events are canceled or scaled back. A new daily record of nearly 120,000 infections was set in the UK, while new research suggests a booster shot only offers ten weeks of maximum protection against the Omicron variant. In other words, I would say this is no time to let our guard down, but people already let their guard down some time back. Thus, why new variants continue to emerge, and we’re likely to be stuck in this cycle of death for years to come. The only silver lining may be that potentially better treatments are here.

Rest in Peace, Medina Spirit

AP

New York Times – Medina Spirit, an embattled Kentucky Derby winner, dies during a workout

Am deeply disturbed by this, to the point I can’t even find the words. The sport of horse racing is in a lot of trouble, that’s literally all I can say.

AG Merrick Garland instructs U.S. attorneys to ‘prioritize prosecution of federal crimes occurring on aircraft’ as incidents involving unruly passengers explode

A woman was kicked off an Allegiant Air flight and arrested Sunday for refusing to wear a face mask, police said. As she was wheeled down the jetway in Las Vegas, police said, the woman allegedly yelled obscenities and "Let's go, Brandon" — a euphemism involving the president, reported CBS affiliate KLAS.

Katrina Alspaugh, of Las Vegas, faces one charge of violating airport rules, according to KLAS. Police said Alspaugh had earlier attempted to punch another passenger at the security checkpoint who pointed out Alspaugh was not wearing her mask.

It is one in a stream of incidents of alleged unruly behavior in the skies, and came as the hectic holiday travel season starts. A Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman said Tuesday was the sixth straight day agents screened more than 2 million passengers, the longest stretch of days topping that mark this year. Tuesday's passenger volume was 91% of its 2019 level, the agency said Wednesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration said this week it had received 5,338 reports of unruly passengers so far this year, 3,856 of which involved masks, and is requesting a total $161,823 in fines against eight passengers for alleged alcohol-related incidents. That brings the total civil penalties against passengers to at least $1.3 million in 2021.

The largest of the fines announced this week, $40,823, stems from an April incident aboard a Southwest Airlines flight from San Jose to San Diego. A passenger allegedly drank their own alcohol during the flight despite being told by a flight attendant it was prohibited, then sexually assaulted the flight attendant and smoked marijuana in the bathroom, according to a news release.

A passenger on a March flight from Fort Meyers, Florida, to Detroit that was diverted to Atlanta is accused of repeatedly taking off his face mask after crew members told him to keep it on, swearing at other passengers and accusing them of stealing, and appeared to be intoxicated, according to the release.

"This is America. This is free speech. What don't you understand?" he allegedly yelled at a crew member. (Read more)
