The US Treasury is weighing the minting of a $1 coin in Trump’s honour—an act in direct contravention of federal law

via the US Treasury Department

{The Guardian 3 October} ‘US treasury considers special $1 Trump coin reading ‘fight, fight, fight’’

It is scarcely surprising that Trump should demand his likeness upon a coin. Yet what The Guardian omitted to note is that US federal law has long forbidden the depiction of living figures upon coinage. The statute traces back to the Civil War, when Treasury engraver Spencer Clark, given authority under a Congressional resolution to honour ‘Clark’—intended for the explorer William Clark—presumptuously placed his own portrait upon a fractional banknote. Outrage followed, and in 1866 an amendment to an appropriations bill forbade the appearance of living persons on currency.

That proscription has been reaffirmed in more recent times, most notably in the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which authorised the semiquincentennial dollar coinage for 2026 while underscoring the prohibition. Yet, with a compliant Republican Congress that will not move to impeachment under any circumstance, one wonders what remedy would exist should the Treasury, at Trump’s obvious direction and encouragment, simply proceed with minting Trump coins regardless. And why stop there? His devotees in the #MAGA faithful have long fantasised about chiselling his countenance into Mount Rushmore itself. Idolatry is proscribed outright in scripture; yet in Trumpistan it is enjoined, even as its zealots brandish the cross and fancy themselves soldiers of Christ.

{alternate text for the above image} A monochrome sketch of a proposed US Treasury coin depicts Donald Trump rendered in heroic, authoritarian style. At its centre, he raises a clenched fist before a billowing American flag, his expression stern and resolute, the folds of his suit and tie drawn with deliberate gravitas. Around the rim, the word “FIGHT” is repeated three times, echoing the combative motif, while inscriptions at the base include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and a denomination of “$1.” The composition recalls the visual language of propaganda medals, casting Trump as both emblem and rallying cry for a politicised vision of national identity.

Supremacy is the only guiding principle of the GOP and their supporters

Supremacy is the only guiding principle of the GOP and their supporters, who know full well they are outnumbered and therefore must establish a South African-style apartheid system of minority rule in America. Lucian Truscott, Salon -

(Republicans are) a white party and they're forming a white country with white laws and white companies and white jobs where white votes count and others don't. They can live in the states that comprise that country, but they can't survive there without our money. It was the same way with the South before the Civil War. They lived in their states with slavery, but they couldn't survive without the economy of the North, so they started a war. They never intended to "secede." They intended to win, and run the new country, which would be the South writ large, with slave-owners in power and slavery everywhere.

That's what Republicans and Donald Trump are doing right now. They know they can't win legitimate elections. There aren't enough of them. So they are engaged in a war, with the aim not of winning elections, but of taking over and exercising the power that, at least until now, came from winning elections. Republicans can't rely on doing that, so they have transformed their party from one that participates in democracy to a fascist party engaged in a takeover of the United States of America.

Democrats may or may not "win" in 2022 and 2024, but the elections are already over. Republicans have declared that only their votes count. Unless we get together and stay together and use our numbers to protect our democracy, we will end up living in their fascist country ruled by their dictator. (Read more)

Regarding the statue of Robert E. Lee in Richmond

AP

New York Times - Richmond removes Robert E. Lee statue

Regarding the statue of Robert E. Lee in Richmond: I believe we can acknowledge slavery and the Confederacy were great evils, and still acknowledge that General Lee was one of the single greatest military strategists in history. And was no fan of slavery, either. In fact, the historical record shows that he hated the institution of slavery. He lived in a time before Americans all saw themselves as one. Most citizens in the mid-1800s saw themselves as belonging to their state before belonging to the union, and Robert E. Lee decided to fight for his beloved Virginia. I need not be a right-wing lunatic, or a racist, or have any sympathy for the overall Confederate cause – past *and* present – to respect a great gentleman of American history. Statue or no statue, recognition given or not, General Lee’s place in history is secure, and it’s a waste of time for any of us to argue over it in the year 2021. This is all political theater – the grandstanding from the left and the handwringing over it from the right (and from Donald Trump, native of New York City with no ties whatsoever to the South.) History isn’t as black and white – pardon the deliberate pun – as most of us in this stupid timeline so desperately want to believe.
