Optimism hath little soil: a large and ever-growing plurality of Trump 2024 voters express extremist, hard-right leanings in poll

A stylised, Fritz Willis–inspired illustration shows a young woman perched on a grimy, sagging sofa in a wood-panelled room, surrounded by the debris of fast food and half-crushed cans. She wears a red “Make America Great Again” cap, a tightly knotted white blouse that accentuates her figure, and a short tartan skirt; she poses with theatrical exuberance, tongue out in a gesture equal parts flirtation and caricature. An American flag hangs loosely on the wall behind her, its folds mirroring the room’s general shabbiness. To the right, a television glows with the Fox News logo, casting a blue light across the cluttered scene. The composition blends satire and Americana, presenting its subject as both participant in and emblem of a media-soaked, performative political culture.

{Manhattan Institute 1 December} ‘The New GOP Survey Analysis of Americans Overall, Today’s Republican Coalition, and the Minorities of MAGA’

A disquieting proportion of GOP voters are willing to embrace conceits that had long been relegated to the feverish margins of our public life—averring that the Holocaust was but a hoax, that the moon-landing was but a cunning masque, that the attacks of 9/11 were ‘an inside job’, and that vaccines be the very fountain of autism. More than half do yet maintain that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulently contrived against Donald Trump, a belief impervious to evidence and judicial review alike.

Yet more grievous still, some seventeen per cent of Republicans and Trump-aligned voters are reckoned to harbour devoutly anti-Semitic notions, a vice most sharply found among the younger cohort. Alas, among Democrats the figure rises to twenty per cent, and in both camps these numbers are growing: the future estate of Jewish safety and dignity within the former United States standeth, by any sober measure, in most ominous and perilous uncertainty.

And let us not forget: there is every reason to assume that a certain proportion of those surveyed were not wholly candid about the extremity of their convictions. This is invariably the case—in polling, in public discourse, and in the unguarded corners of daily life. Always. The past decade or so, during which so many individuals’ true colours have bled through with startling clarity, hath rendered this truth almost painfully obvious; only now, instead of recoiling from the rot thus exposed, most appear content to embrace it.

Nihilism rules the day, and we stand a long, long way from any conceivable moment—if such a moment will ever come—when the tide may turn back toward the relative sanity and civic composure once enjoyed in the America of earlier decades. One might say this equilibrium reached its apogee in the 1980s and 1990s; and though I freely concede that my judgement may be coloured by the fact that I grew up in those years, it remains, by any rational assessment, a period in which the nation was stronger, its people more resilient, and American power at its undisputed zenith. My instincts tell me that we now inhabit the terminal stages of the republic, and that optimism hath little remaining soil in which to grow.

And what, then, is to become of this fractured multitude, all these bloody people, when the edifice finally collapses outright? A nation whose citizens despise one another is singularly ill-equipped to weather a total societal unravelling; indeed, even the most harmonious civilisation would struggle to withstand the gathering HELL into which the former United States is, day by day, further descending.

US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan releases 1,800 pages of evidence in the election conspiracy case. Trump calls her ‘the most evil person’ for doing so and accuses her of election meddling

Donald Trump knows, as well as we do, that nothing has or will change anyone’s mind. His legions of supporters shall show up in sufficient numbers, even if he were to ‘shoot a man on Fifth Avenue’. No revelations, not even the long-rumoured ‘pee tape’ supposedly in Putin’s possession, are going to tear #Murica away from their beloved god-king. So why not just keep his mouth shut instead of spewing such foolish and self-harming words? (How wise is it to call a judge presiding over your case an ‘evil person’?) Impossible, I grant—shutting up would require the self-discipline he so utterly lacks. The endless wailing, whining, and casting of blame we have long witnessed have only bound him closer to that large swath of the American people comprising #Cult45, and emboldened his Christofascist allies and enablers. Thus, he shall not change his course—expect more name-calling and tantrums to follow.

Recent headlines:

Trump, at 78 years old, is now cancelling interviews, citing exhaustion - So, when will the American people, the media, the GOP, and (especially) his own Democratic Party apologise to President Biden for throwing the most pathetic mass tantrum in US political history this past summer after the 81 year old President had a less than ideal debate performance? Yet Trump can be 'exhausted', and even many of his detractors are deluded into thinking he still has some vigour left. I know—no apology to President Biden will be coming from any of them. Special Counsel Jack Smith releases documents proving that Trump deliberately attempted to overturn the 2020 election and stage a coup, fully aware that he had genuinely lost

{ABC News 2 October} Bombshell immunity filing details Trump's alleged 'increasingly desperate' bid to overturn 2020 election

This revelation will make not one iota of difference to his legion of depraved sycophants, nor to most of the American people at large. Mark my words: 5 November will be national suicide, and the streets will flow with blood. A significant portion of the population is willing to risk their lives and take those of others to keep a Black woman out of the White House and their orange hero out of prison. It is sheer insanity on a level never before seen in American history, and it is all coming to a head. Civil war is imminent – God’s judgment on an evil and mentally ill nation.

The eclipse comes and goes, and #Qanon and various groups appear to be embarrassed once more. Do they care? Do they still ‘trust the plan’? (Short answer: the only ‘plan’ is hating and hurting Jews, and every single follower is aware of it)

Getty Images

The eclipse has passed, and no new catastrophe has emerged, once again leaving the tin foil hat-wearing 'Pepe' crowd with egg on their faces. Do the 'trust the plan' #Qanon enthusiasts still ‘trust the plan’? Sadly, the answer remains 'yes', as there is a complete lack of shame and dignity at all times with these people.

All the trappings we see from these folks - the many slogans, the idolization of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the stupid frog, the fixation on pedophiles and child trafficking - are thinly veiled cover for their one overriding purpose: hating and disempowering Jews. It matters zero to them if their ‘plan’ is grounded in reality; they are fervent Christian nationalists with a severely distorted sense of reality, and a highly tuned antipathy to all who do not believe as they do.

That said, every #Cult45 acolyte knows, deep down, that Donald Trump did not win the 2020 presidential election, and Trump and his enablers know he did not win; they shout 'Trump won' in our faces as a form of abuse, not because anybody thinks it is true. #Cult45 will be proven wrong time and time again, and every time they will only intensify their hatreds and willful delusions. It is organized insanity in service of neo-Nazism and white supremacy.

Do not underestimate the absurdity and cruelty these committed fanatics are willing to perpetrate. Despite their willful delusion regarding specific details, their profound fear and hatred of the Jewish people remain unwavering in the grand scheme of things. This hatred is as ancient as time itself, a malignant cancer that will likely endure for hundreds and thousands of years to come - assuming the world still stands, but I digress.

Colorado court rules on Trump ballot access: A privilege a s**tbag such as he *never* should have had to begin with

Luke Gronneberg/Sidney Daily News

Concerning the Colorado ruling: An individual of dubious character such as Donald Trump should never have been legally sanctioned to vie for the presidency in 2016, nor yet in the year 2024, given all that hath transpired. Henceforth, stricter qualifications should be imposed on a federal level to attain the privilege of the ballot. These qualifications may encompass examinations of mental competence, civic knowledge, moral rectitude, a minimum amount of government experience, background checks conducted by multiple law enforcement and national security agencies, and mayhap even the mandate of prior military service, at least for male aspirants. I have also firmly concluded that some of these same prerequisites should be met to qualify for the right to cast a vote: We are compelled to renew our driver's licenses every few years. Wherefore not introduce a voting license resting upon, at the very least, passing a rudimentary civics exam? Those who support this nation-killing jackal bear responsibility for the consequences. The year 2016 revealed the truth, and the COVID pandemic confirmed it – people at this historical moment are truly this horrible and stupid; the trend has worsened exponentially since then with no signs of improvement in the foreseeable future. Get me off this sinking ship.

President Biden announces his re-election bid

Drew Angerer/Getty Images

Your choice, #Murica: Are you going to keep whining about this president - because he is ‘too old,’ or because one believes the phony allegations of election fraud in 2020 - or are you going to allow the orange jackass, who is an old man himself and created this entire mess, back into power? Considering that I have less-than-zero faith in the people of this country, at this moment I am betting on the latter. We narrowly dodged a bullet in 2020, when a slim plurality - not a majority - of Americans voted Donald Trump out of office. Millions just did not bother to vote, and I am predicting even millions more will opt out in 2024 as political fatigue is at an all-time high, on top of the fact that zealots are intimidating ordinary people into silence and compliance. The nationalist populists - a/k/a #Cult45, a/k/a neo-fascists - are simply more motivated than anyone else, and the majority are completely unwilling and/or unable to put up a fight. I pray that I am wrong and President Biden will be re-elected in a landslide; but I really do not think the bastards are not going to let it happen, nor will most lift a finger to oppose the bastards. Indeed, they have yet to do so in any meaningful way. {AP 4/25}

Reviewing Daniel Pipes’ piece in The Dispatch - ‘It’s past time for “conservatives” to reject conspiracy theories’ (emphasis on “conservatives’ mine)

Via Sutori.com

DANIEL PIPES - It's past time for conservatives to reject conspiracy theories (The Dispatch 4/22)

‘Trump won,’ the vaccines are unsafe, and Putin is a good guy saving the Ukrainian people from ‘Nazis’ and American bioweapon plants. A significant portion of #Murica now believes these things to be true, and good luck changing their minds. They believe these things because they are angry at all they see around them, they feel compelled to seek protection, and are already predisposed, by human nature, to be disdainful of diversity and the rights of those outside their given tribe. Daniel Pipes accurately defines what has gone wrong with the American right-wing, but his final paragraph would seem to imply, to me at least, that he remains devoted to restoring the ‘conservative’ movement and saving the GOP. Both are utterly lost causes, and the answer to our ills does not lie in any ideological movement. For zealous dedication to ideology is what got us here, and always leads to chaos, tyranny, and destruction. Every single time and in every single place, in all of human history. Mankind repeats the same mistakes over and over, and what the old-fashioned Reagan conservative lot (of which, perhaps, I could be said to be part of, or at least have some affinity for) is learning that America is an not exceptional, ‘shining city on a hill,’ no matter how badly Mr. Reagan and millions of others wanted to believe it so. Excerpt -

The U.S. bioweapons conspiracy theory is more unlikely and outlandish than those about the election and vaccines; those, at least, fit a yearning and a fear, respectively. How did so many conservatives come to believe Russian propaganda? Because Vladimir Putin’s “anti-woke” views on gender issues, his appeal to “Christian values,” and his aura of strength won him a Republican following that often overlooked his brutal, tyrannical, and bellicose 22-year rule. Pat Buchanan, for example, called him a “stalwart defender of traditional values.” While some of his admirers acknowledged their mistake after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, a significant minority made excuses for him by blaming Ukraine and the United States. Putin’s government and media, echoed by his Chinese counterparts, provided these conservatives with a favorite argument: that the U.S. government ran 26 secret (and illegal) bioweapon laboratories in Ukraine that threaten Russia’s security.

This conspiracy theory built on the careless wording in congressional testimony given by Victoria Nuland, a State Department representative, that Putinists then transformed into an American plot. In the words of Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, Nuland revealed “that the Russian disinformation [the Biden administration has] been telling us for days is a lie and a conspiracy theory and crazy and immoral to believe is, in fact, totally and completely true.” This argument then took off with the #USbiolabs hashtag; in a typical post, one tweeter said the Pentagon is filled with “the most evil and corrupt people.”

Some reflections: All three conspiracy theories share an alienation contrary to the “city on a hill” ethos of the modern American conservative movement. Reversing historic patterns, Democrats now call for obedience to authority, be it court rulings about election results or Anthony Fauci’s COVID-19 dicta, while mainstream Republicans itch to defy the government. In another reversal, liberals are more patriotic about America’s role in defending Ukraine.

In contrast to most conspiracy theories, the current ones do not focus (with some exceptions) on Jews or secret society members. Oddly, they blame election shenanigans not on prominent figures such as President Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, or Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, but rather on obscure, mostly unnamed, election officials in far-flung locations. They attribute dangerous vaccines not to malign scientists, greedy corporations, or power-hungry politicians, but to a vague mentality of scientific hubris. They attribute bioweapons to an obscure entity within the Pentagon, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

The three conspiracy theories also differ from each other. A single individual, Donald Trump, conjured up the “stolen election” claim, but vaccine skepticism developed organically, while the bioweapons scheme derived from Russian media. Only Republicans believe the first; the latter two have adherents across the political spectrum. If election fraud is a narrowly American issue, vaccine skepticism has a global reach (think of Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro), and bioweapons primarily concern Russia. (Read more)

Trump using his lackeys to jockey for 2024 positioning, while the House Minority Leader is caught on tape saying that he would ask Trump to resign and that Trump acknowledged ‘some responsibility’ for January 6

Evan Vucci/AP/Shutterstock

NEW YORK TIMES - McCarthy said Trump acknowledged ‘some responsibility’ for Jan. 6: New audio captures what Representative Kevin McCarthy said to Republicans shortly after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol

I do not believe for a second that Trump, even privately, has ever taken responsibility for his obvious, central role in inciting these yahoos to sedition. Kevin McCarthy was likely speaking out of his ass on these tapes, making up a story on the fly that he figured would placate nervous Republicans in the immediate wake of the Capitol Hill riot. God help us if this inept, two-faced slimebag becomes Speaker of the House. McCarthy, in the heat of the moment, may or may not have asked Trump to resign, but there was little point to that as only days remained in Trump’s term. Since then, however, Kevin McCarthy and the majority of House GOP have done nothing but obstruct any efforts to hold Trump and his various cronies and sycophants accountable, while the party becomes more overtly Fascist in their policy and rhetoric. Excerpt -

Representative Kevin McCarthy, the House Republican leader, told G.O.P. lawmakers in the days after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol that former President Donald J. Trump acknowledged that he bore “some responsibility” for what happened that day, new audio revealed.

The audio obtained by The New York Times that emerged on Friday is part of a series of new revelations about Republican leaders’ private condemnations of Mr. Trump in the days after his supporters stormed the Capitol as part of an effort to stop the certification of electoral votes for Joseph R. Biden Jr.

“Let me be very clear to all of you, and I have been very clear to the president: he bears responsibilities for his words and actions,” Mr. McCarthy said on the call, which took place on Jan. 11. “No if, ands or buts.”

“I asked him personally today, does he hold responsibility for what happened?” Mr. McCarthy said. “Does he feel bad about what happened? He told me he does have some responsibility for what happened and he’d need to acknowledge that.”

Mr. McCarthy’s assertion is at odds with the former president’s refusal, then and now, to accept responsibility for the deadly attack. It illustrates the vast gulf between the private, derisive tone Republican leaders use about the former president and their public flattery of the de facto leader of their party.

Mr. Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mr. McCarthy was asked in a news conference earlier this year about the call with House Republicans after the attack. He sidestepped the question: “I’m not sure what call you’re talking about.”

The New York Times on Thursday reported that Mr. McCarthy told Republicans he planned to urge Mr. Trump to resign. The reporting is based on the upcoming book “This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden and the Battle for America’s Future.”

Mr. McCarthy disputed that reporting, but in an audio clip obtained by The Times of a different phone call with Republican lawmakers, Mr. McCarthy said he would tell Mr. Trump of the impeachment resolution: “I think this will pass, and it would be my recommendation you should resign.” (Read more)

Jenna Ellis speaks out against DeSantis’ war on Mickey Mouse, offers to defend Disney in court - When even a shameless grifter, and certified cultist thinks you’ve gone too far and there is no benefit to be had, that says something. Likely, it says she is a Trump loyalist, and perhaps Trump is realizing this culture war nonsense may ultimately backfire badly on the GOP. More to the point, he is seeking to neuter any internal opposition prior to 2024, and DeSantis has been making a lot of noise of late. These Republicans are going so far off the deep end that Trump may appear as a relatively reasonable alternative to those on the fence in two years. Which may be how he is going to position himself between now and then, seeing as this is not a sane society and he is not going to prison as he would be if this were a sane place. (Newsweek 4/22)

Federal judge declares Trump likely committed crimes following the 2020 election, Ukrainian refugees face more danger outside of their country, while America is busy arguing about celebrities

‘A federal judge on Monday ordered Trump attorney John Eastman to turn emails over to the Jan. 6 Committee. The judge also said that the former president likely committed crimes while trying to stay in power.’ Lock them up already. Trump, Eastman, and the entire cabal. Perhaps we send Trump to the island of Saint Helena, and he can die there as Napoleon did two-hundred years ago. I’d like to see that. (Raw Story 3/28)

Not condemning or judging any single individual, but literally every post on my feeds, FB and Twitter both, right now is about the incident at the Oscars. I wish people got this riled up and angry about what Putin is doing to the Ukrainian people, or the January 6 insurrection, or those spreading disinformation and refusing to follow protocol in the middle of a pandemic. #JustSaying

Ukrainian refugees are prime targets for human traffickers, and there doesn’t appear to be any shortage of these predators. Some of them posing as relief workers at border crossings, others are contacting women online and making grand promises of a new life elsewhere in order to lure them into their trap. Pray for the safety of all Ukrainians in this horrific struggle. (BBC 3/27)

Ukrainian Holocaust survivors forced to flee to Germany - Unspeakably horrible. Obviously a bit of irony that they’re going to Germany, but how proud I am of my blood brothers and sisters in Deutschland. No nation in history ever took greater responsibility for their sins, no nation has ever redeemed itself as they have, and no nation has ever rebuilt so successfully from the ruins of war than my ancestral homeland. And Ukraine shall rebuild, as well. #NeverAgain means never again, and Putin is the Hitler of our time. (AP 3/28)

House January 6th Committee determines that Trump was part of criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election

Jim Bourg/Reuters

While the world focuses on Ukraine – as we must – the January 6th Committee is continuing its work. In an ideal world, Trump would be in a Siberian gulag by now. What am I saying, though? If this were an ideal world, the son-of-a-bitch would never have existed to start with. Lock him up. -

(CNN) Former President Donald Trump and a right-wing lawyer were part of a "criminal conspiracy" to overturn the 2020 presidential election, the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot alleges in a court filing Wednesday.

The filing is part of an attempt to convince a judge to allow the panel access to emails from lawyer John Eastman, who is claiming attorney-client privilege. The committee said he helped to orchestrate the plot.

The filing is the most extensive release to date from the House's January 6 investigators as they try to obtain Eastman's emails -- and comes well before the House select committee releases its final report on its findings on Trump. House members have also signaled they may make a criminal referral to the Justice Department about Trump, depending on their findings, and the House's arguments Wednesday could be seen as a preview of a case that could be made by federal prosecutors.

In the 61-page court filing on Wednesday, lawyers for the House wrote: "Evidence and information available to the Committee establishes a good-faith belief that Mr. Trump and others may have engaged in criminal and/or fraudulent acts, and that Plaintiff's legal assistance was used in furtherance of those activities."

Eastman and Trump have not been accused of any crime by federal or state prosecutors, and no top advisers around Trump have been charged for January 6-related crimes.

The House has no ability to bring criminal charges. A judge overseeing the civil lawsuit will review the emails himself and decide whether they should stay protected. (Read more)

Trump's madness knows no boundaries, as he calls for his own VP to be investigated for the crime of following the law

AFP/Getty Images

Trump knows it is a lie – the Big Lie. ‘Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth,’ as Joseph Goebbels is reputed to have said, and absolutely put into practice in Nazi Germany. Trump knew Vice-President Pence did not have the constitutional authority to overturn the results of a presidential election, but will go to any lengths to keep the Big Lie going and rally the people to his cause. His cause being declared President for Life. How much further is this going to be allowed to go before this would-be dictator is locked up? The White House better have a damn good plan in place to contain the certain revolt of Trump’s most dangerous supporters when/if justice is finally served. Know this much: America – if it even survives, a big 'if’ - will be severely divided for at least a generation or two to come, in large part because of one power-hungry cult leader and the madness he has inflicted upon a country that really was not doing so great before he came along. The American people and their media overlords have only made it too easy for this evil man to take over. Trump now says he wants Mike Pence investigated for not sending back votes -

President Donald Trump on Tuesday resumed his criticism of former Vice President Mike Pence for failing to 'overturn' the election results – and is now saying his former VP should be probed for failing to 'send back' votes in states where Trump was claiming fraud.

Trump fired off comment in a statement from his Save America PAC – a day after a stunning statement where Trump wrote that Pence 'did have the right to change the outcome' and added 'he could have overturned the Election!'

Now, a day after it was revealed that Pence's former chief of staff Marc Short testified before the House Jan. 6th Committee, Trump is calling for an investigation of Pence as well as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who accuses of failing to protect the Capitol.

'So pathetic to watch the Unselect Committee of political hacks, liars, and traitors work so feverishly to alter the Electoral College Act so that a Vice President cannot ensure the honest results of the election, when just one year ago they said that “the Vice President has absolutely no right to ensure the true outcome or results of an election,” wrote Trump. He was referencing the Electoral Count Act, the subject of election reform negotiations. (Read more)

At Texas rally, Trump promises to incite his followers to civil war if he Is indicted

Jason Fochtman/AP

All of you still supporting Donald Trump, and spending your days crying about President Biden, better start re-examining your values and beliefs. What am I saying, that’s not going to happen? In 2022, after all that has been said and done, the only reason anyone supports a demagogue like Trump is because they want license to hurt other Americans. Via Will Bunch -

In fact, the man who’d occupied the White House little more than one year ago delivered one of the most incendiary and most dangerous speeches in America’s 246-year history. It included an appeal for all-out mayhem in the streets to thwart the U.S. justice system and prevent Trump from going to jail, as the vise tightens from overlapping criminal probes in multiple jurisdictions. And it also featured a stunning campaign promise — that Trump would look to abuse the power of the presidency to pardon those involved in the Jan. 6 insurrection.

It’s impossible for me to understate or downplay the importance of this moment, and I hope that my colleagues in the media — who too often over the last year have craved or even pretended about a return to the politics of “normal,” when we are nowhere near normal — will wake up and see this. Of course, Biden’s presidency deserves our full scrutiny, with praise for what’s gone right (an economic boom) and criticism for what’s gone wrong (broken promises on climate and student debt). But while Biden is seeking to restore democratic norms, a shadow ex-president — unpunished so far for his role in an attempted coup on Jan. 6 — is rebuilding a cult-like movement in the heartland of America, with all the personal grievance and appeals to Brownshirts-style violence that marked the lowest moments of the 20th century. On the 89th anniversary of the date (Jan. 30, 1933) that Adolf Hitler — rehabilitated after his attempted coup — assumed power in Germany, are we repeating the past’s mistakes of complacency and underestimation? ‘The United States is coming to an end. The question is how.’ Canadian author outlines scenarios for the coming civil war

Leah Millis/Reuters

Americans damn well better start listening and paying attention, but they will not. Most people in this country today want tyranny, just so long as it is directed toward those groups and individuals one doesn’t like. The rest just demand to be entertained constantly. It appears to me that we have become a nation of pathetic, incompetent, and hateful people, and that’s the perfect recipe for collapse. Abandon all hope, for the biggest problem with America is the American people. As for Canada: When we fall to full-on Fascism, they will likely be invaded or otherwise taken over by Nazi America. Trudeau and his government are powerless, and useless. Sometimes I wonder the same about our current administration, as much as I try to support President Biden. Via Dean Obeidallah -

(CNN) "The United States is coming to an end. The question is how." Those are the jarring opening lines of Canadian author Stephen Marche's new book, "The Next Civil War: Dispatches from the American Future." Released the same week as the anniversary of the January 6 attack on our Capitol that signaled how dangerous our political polarization has become, Marche's book shares different scenarios of how the United States could collapse.

Marche isn't the only Canadian worried about their southern neighbor's future. Just days before Marche's book released, political scientist Thomas Homer-Dixon -- the executive director of the Cascade Institute, which focuses on ways to address threats to society -- penned a powerful op-ed in Canada's "Globe and Mail" that begins with a similar warning. "By 2025, American democracy could collapse, causing extreme domestic political instability, including widespread civil violence," Homer-Dixon writes. "By 2030, if not sooner," he adds, "the country could be governed by a right-wing dictatorship."

As Americans, our first instinct when a person from outside of the US says something critical of our nation is often to dismiss the comment (or mock their country; be honest!). In this case, though, neither Marche nor Homer-Dixon wrote their words to belittle America or to make Canadians feel better about their country. (Read more)

Washington Post report: ‘Red America has seen the highest rates of cases and deaths, and the lowest rate of vaccinations’

Evelyn Hockstein/Reuters

It’s almost as if there’s a correlation between wearing masks and getting vaccinated, and fewer people falling sick and dying. Who would have thought? (/s.) For once, I’m glad to live in a state run mostly by the Democrats. At least their party isn’t denying science and enabling covidiocy. WaPo national corespondent Philip Bump reports -

It’s worth putting a fine point on a subject I raised earlier Monday: It is red America, Donald Trump-voting America, that has seen the worst effects of the pandemic. With divergent vaccination rates, with the unvaccinated population that’s most at risk being made up of Republicans at three times the rate of Democrats, that gap is poised to grow.

If we break down monthly case and death figures by county vote in 2020, we see that Trump counties have been hardest hit by the pandemic on a per capita basis since last year. If we throw in vaccination rates, we see that it is those same counties that have been the slowest to get vaccinated. As of April of this year, the most red and most blue counties in the country began to diverge on vaccination rates. As of writing, data compiled by The Washington Post suggests that the counties that voted most strongly for President Biden are fully vaccinated at a rate 40 percent higher than the rate in the counties that voted most strongly for Trump. 'Fell victim to authoritarian tendencies.’ United States added to the list of ‘backsliding democracies’ for the first time

Julio Cortez/AP

The Stockholm-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance report is a sobering indictment of America in the 21st century. But we are hardly alone in the global march toward tyranny. It is human nature, especially in times of turmoil, to place security - and protection from ‘the other’ - above individual liberty. -

The United States for the first time was added to a list of “backsliding democracies” in a report released Monday by the Stockholm-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.

“The United States, the bastion of global democracy, fell victim to authoritarian tendencies itself, and was knocked down a significant number of steps on the democratic scale,” the International IDEA’s Global State of Democracy 2021 report said.

The study, which analyzed trends from 2020 to 2021, found that more than a quarter of the world’s population now lives in democratically backsliding countries, which International IDEA defines as nations seeing a gradual decline in the quality of their democracy.

“The world is becoming more authoritarian as nondemocratic regimes become even more brazen in their repression and many democratic governments suffer from backsliding by adopting their tactics of restricting free speech and weakening the rule of law, exacerbated by what threatens to become a ‘new normal’ of covid-19 restrictions,” the report found. “The number [of countries] moving in the direction of authoritarianism is three times the number moving toward democracy.”

International IDEA classes countries as democratic (which includes those backsliding), “hybrid,” and authoritarian, the latter two of which it considers to be nondemocratic. It bases its analysis on 50 years of democratic indicators tracked in about 160 countries.

The report found that some of “the most worrying” democratic backsliding happened in some of the world’s largest countries, including Brazil and India. It also highlighted “concerning democratic declines” in the United States and three European Union members: Hungary, Poland and Slovenia. (Read more)

DHS issues holiday alert warning of domestic terrorism threat

Alex Wong/Getty Images

In addition to the continuing threat global Jihadists pose, the Department of Homeland Security is showing increasing concern about homegrown terrorism. Considering we had a genuine homegrown terrorist attack on the United States Capitol this past January 6, it is no longer hyperbole to say our own people are now more of a threat to the homeland than foreign actors. And what a sad commentary that is -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. faces a “heightened threat environment” from domestic extremists and people inspired by foreign terrorist groups with the approach of the holiday season, the Department of Homeland Security warned Wednesday.

While DHS said it had no credible information on a specific threat, the agency warns in its latest national terrorism advisory bulletin that mass gatherings for the upcoming religious holidays could be potential targets, including from people and organizations seeking to exploit resentment over pandemic lockdowns and recent events such as the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

“The Homeland continues to face a diverse and challenging threat environment,” it said.

This is the fourth time this year the agency has issued a bulletin, highlighting the perceived danger from a volatile mix of domestic extremists, often motivated by racially or ethnically motivated hate, and homegrown extremists inspired by overseas groups. It reflects a shift from the focus on al-Qaida and other organizations following the creation of DHS after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

It also comes in an environment that has been super-charged by online propaganda and conspiracy theories as well as anger over the economic turmoil caused by the pandemic. DHS warned that extremists will pose a “significant threat” at least into 2022.

Timothy Langan, the assistant director of the FBI’s counterterrorism division, made similar points last week in an appearance before the House intelligence committee. He said the threat from domestic terrorism has “significantly increased” in the last 18 months, with the agency currently conducting about 2,700 investigations on violent domestic extremists. Washington Post report details Trump team meeting prior to January 6 to determine how to deny the lawfully elected president from taking office

Jahi Chikwendiu/The Washington Post

Every single one of these people, beginning with Trump, needs to be locked up. America is a joke so long as it doesn’t enforce its own laws and allows sedition to go unpunished -

They called it the “command center,” a set of rooms and suites in the posh Willard hotel a block from the White House where some of President Donald Trump’s most loyal lieutenants were working day and night with one goal in mind: overturning the results of the 2020 election.

The Jan. 6 rally on the Ellipse and the ensuing attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob would draw the world’s attention to the quest to physically block Congress from affirming Joe Biden’s victory. But the activities at the Willard that week add to an emerging picture of a less visible effort, mapped out in memos by a conservative pro-Trump legal scholar and pursued by a team of presidential advisers and lawyers seeking to pull off what they claim was a legal strategy to reinstate Trump for a second term.

They were led by Trump’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani. Former chief White House strategist Stephen K. Bannon was an occasional presence as the effort’s senior political adviser. Former New York City police commissioner Bernard Kerik was there as an investigator. Also present was John Eastman, the scholar, who outlined scenarios for denying Biden the presidency in an Oval Office meeting on Jan. 4 with Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

They sought to make the case to Pence and ramp up pressure on him to take actions on Jan. 6 that Eastman suggested were within his powers, three people familiar with the operation said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations. Their activities included finding and publicizing alleged evidence of fraud, urging members of state legislatures to challenge Biden’s victory and calling on the Trump-supporting public to press Republican officials in key states.

The effort underscores the extent to which Trump and a handful of true believers were working until the last possible moment to subvert the will of the voters, seeking to pressure Pence to delay or even block certification of the election, leveraging any possible constitutional loophole to test the boundaries of American democracy. Twitter algorithms found to promote nationalist populist content over other political posts

Getty Images

Sure, let’s just keep whining that ‘big tech’ is biased against ‘conservatives,’ by all means (and they will.) Washington Post -

An internal evaluation of Twitter’s recommendation algorithms concluded that they amplify right-leaning political content more than left-leaning content, company researchers announced Thursday, undercutting allegations by many conservatives who contend they are being censored on the platform.

Twitter researchers analyzed millions of 2020 tweets by elected officials in seven countries — Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, Britain and United States — as well as posts that linked to political content from news outlets. Researchers relied on outside experts to determine what was right- or left-leaning rather than deciding for themselves.

“Our results reveal a remarkably consistent trend: In 6 out of 7 countries studied, the mainstream political right enjoys higher algorithmic amplification than the mainstream political left,” the researchers said in a 27-page report. (Read more)

'I’m so stupid … we thought that we were going to save America, and we were wrong.’ January 6 insurrectionist’s declaration to FBI agents proves what a sick brainwashing scam Trumpism is

Getty Images

An excerpt from an excellent column by Rex Huppke: 'We can’t let ongoing election lies become political white noise. A Jan. 6 defendant’s words show why' -

Daniel “D.J.” Rodriguez, one of the hundreds charged in the Jan. 6 domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol, broke down in tears while speaking to FBI agents: “I’m so stupid. I thought I was going to be awesome. I thought I was a good guy.”

He was neither awesome nor a good guy. Just a dupe.

Like many who have embraced former President Donald Trump’s ongoing lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, Rodriguez embodied the old saying, “There’s a sucker born every minute, and two to take him.”

Now the California man stands charged with, among other things, tasing U.S. Capitol police Officer Michael Fanone, who was beaten and suffered a heart attack during the insurrection. Rodriguez is facing the possibility of decades in prison and nobody should feel sorry for him.

But it’s worth reading the nearly 200-page transcript of Rodriguez’s March 31 interview with FBI agents to see the shameless mental havoc wreaked by people like Trump and every Republican politician and pundit pimping, or even playing footsie with, a profoundly false election narrative.

It’s a con transparent as a freshly cleaned window. And it’s dangerous.

Most recognize that, but those who continue spreading it are unconcerned with collateral damage to people or democracy, and those rolling their eyes and letting it become political white noise are missing the urgency and tragedy of the matter.

The transcript of Rodriguez’s interview with federal agents was filed Friday by his attorneys as part of a motion to suppress the interview, alleging the man was not properly Mirandized. Rodriguez was arrested earlier this year after he was identified by online sleuths at Huffington Post, an example of the so-called sedition hunters who have scoured photos and videos from the Jan. 6 attack and traced the identities of many insurrectionists.

In the interview, Rodriguez explains why he left his home in California and traveled to Washington for the “Stop the Steal Rally.”

“Trump called us,” he said. “Trump called us to D.C.”

He later said: “My story is just that we thought that we were going to save America, and we were wrong.” (Read more)
