Still one nation?

A delicate watercolour-and-ink fantasy illustration portrays nine women in flowing robes of muted crimson, blue, violet, and ivory gathered within the ruins of a once-great city. At the centre, two women cling to one another in a tearful embrace, eyes closed as they cradle each other's faces with tenderness and grief. Around them, other pairs console one another, kneel in prayer, or gesture anxiously as translucent ribbons drift through the scene. Behind them, a fractured skyline is divided between warm golden light and cool blue shadow, reinforcing themes of political division, shared sorrow, compassion, and hope amid societal collapse.

Hillary Clinton articulates the obvious: Trump and the GOP invoke the epithet ‘Communists’ against Democrats because it works with their targeted constituencies, and leftists winning primaries are unlikely to survive the general election. {The Independent 8 August}

A cursory glance at Reddit reveals self-styled 'progressives' incensed with Mrs Clinton for stating what ought to be a rather self-evident reality. They would be wise to remember that bloodthirsty tribalism and mindless populism are what delivered unto us Donald Trump, and that they are no better than the millions of rubes following the orange s**tbag if reasoned argument from one of the party’s senior stateswomen is met with violent indignation. This ‘Democratic Socialism’ — and we may debate all day the extent of its relationship or resemblance to the global Communism of the pre-1989 world — is a lot harder a sell than ‘MAGA’ in a country that more than just leans to the right. I have been saying for years that right-wing radicalism shall always prove to be an easier commodity to market to the general public than the left-wing variety in a centre-right nation. Ideological zeal possesses a remarkable ability to distort one’s judgement, as contemporary #Murica (Trumpistan) demonstrates without fail on a daily basis.

The best thing for our republic at present would be the emergence of a moderate, electorally viable third party, presumably consisting of the remaining elected Democrats and Republicans disillusioned and betrayed by their parties’ retreat to the extremes of the political spectrum. Unfortunately, neither the ‘powers-that-be’ nor the majority of the general public are ever going to permit that; the public is too addicted to the team sport aspect (tribalism), the two-party duopoly does not want competition, and comparatively few Americans are in the centre anymore; of the latter, many have simply stopped paying attention altogether. America’s collective psyche hath been in a very dark place for some time now, and I see no light upon the horizon.

As concerns the mid-term elections: the Democrats are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, yet again. They are in an untenable position: they cannot simultaneously court their increasingly radicalised left flank and expect to win over moderates and independents; victory is attainable only with support from both factions, and they also need protest votes from the remnant of the centre-right who are disgusted with what the GOP hath become under Donald Trump. This is a fundamentally ‘conservative’ (right wing) country, a fact of which Hillary Clinton is plainly cognisant; the Democratic rank-and-file would be prudent to listen to her and think before emulating populist Republican voters by championing rhetorical firebrands for public office. It is simply not going to work as well for the left as it hath for the right. Even granting that relatively few Americans are centrists anymore, staying in the centre lane is still the sanest and most rational course available to the Democrats — or, indeed, to anyone opposed to the ruling Trumpist GOP. We need to get back to the centre; it shall not be accomplished through moderate public officials and voters simply capitulating and playing dead.

Flagrant, unabashed disregard for the rule of law, and yet again he will get away with it: National Archives confirms that Trump took classified documents with him to Mar-a-Lago after leaving office

Jim Bourg/Reuters

Yet another high crime for which the unholy son-of-a-bitch is almost certain to never face charges. If there has ever been a figure in all of human history who has lived a charmed life of abusing others and engaging in rank criminality without consequence, it is Donald Trump. He will likely go to his grave a free man, beloved and fiercely defended by millions of American nationalist populists (a/k/a Fascists.) America is a powder keg set to explode. I am 100% convinced that the current administration and the DOJ are never going to pursue charges against Donald Trump, knowing that it will be the catalyst for millions of angry rednecks, white nationalists, fundamentalist Christians, and other assorted reprobates to begin the long, eagerly awaited armed uprising. Keeping the lights on, so to speak, just a bit longer appears to be of a higher priority than any other concern for the Biden administration, but nothing is going to prevent the inevitable, final collapse of this corrupted empire. WASHINGTON (AP) — Classified information was found in the 15 boxes of White House records that were stored at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, the National Archives and Records Administration said in a letter that confirmed the matter has been sent to the Justice Department.

The Friday letter from the agency follows numerous reports around Trump’s handling of sensitive and even classified information during his time as president and after he left the White House. The revelation could also interest federal investigators responsible for policing the handling of government secrets, though the Justice Department and FBI have not indicated they will pursue.

Federal law bars the removal of classified documents to unauthorized locations, though it is possible that Trump could try to argue that, as president, he was the ultimate declassification authority.

No matter the legal risk, it exposes him to charges of hypocrisy given his relentless attacks during the 2016 presidential campaign on Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server as secretary of state. The FBI investigated but ultimately did not recommend charges.

Trump recently denied reports about his administration’s tenuous relationship with the National Archives and his lawyers said that “they are continuing to search for additional presidential records that belong to the National Archives.”

In a statement Friday night, Trump said, “The National Archives did not ‘find’ anything, they were given, upon request, Presidential Records in an ordinary and routine process.”

“If this was anyone but ‘Trump,’ there would be no story here,” he said.

The letter from the archivists in response to the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, which is investigating, also details how certain social media records were not captured and preserved by the Trump administration. And it also says that the agency learned that White House staff frequently conducted official business using unofficial messaging accounts and personal phones. (Read more)

Setting the record straight: ‘Russiagate’ was not a hoax, and Trump is not a victim

Brendan Smialowski /AFP /Getty Images

David Frum, the former White House speechwriter during the Bush 43 administration, is sounding the alarm about the media’s latest tactic in their campaign to revive the political career of Donald Trump: Whitewashing Russia’s (successful) efforts to gaslight the American public and elect Trump in 2016. Don’t fall for any of this bulls**t -

If Donald Trump had been supported only by people who affirmatively liked him, his attack on American democracy would never have gotten as far as it did.

Instead, at almost every turn, Trump was helped by people who had little liking for him as a human being or politician, but assessed that he could be useful for purposes of their own. The latest example: the suddenly red-hot media campaign to endorse Trump’s fantasy that he was the victim of a “Russia hoax.”

The usual suspects in the pro-Trump media ecosystem will of course endorse and repeat everything Trump says, no matter how outlandish. But it’s not pro-Trumpers who are leading the latest round of Trump-Russia denialism. This newest round of excuse-making is being sounded from more respectable quarters, in many cases by people distinguished as Trump critics. With Trump out of office—at least for the time being—they now feel free to subordinate their past concerns about him to other private quarrels with the FBI or mainstream media institutions. On high-subscription Substacks, on popular podcasts, even from within prestige media institutions, people with scant illusions about Trump the man and president are nonetheless volunteering to help him execute one of his Big Lies.
