UK announces stricter immigration policy

photo: AP

{Sky News 12 May} PM: 'Without strong migration rules, we risk becoming an island of strangers'

Sir Keir’s immigration crackdown announcement came with decidedly forced conviction—all stiff delivery and hollow passion, as is his wont. Seems to me, in eternal exile an ocean away, Britain has often been ‘an island of strangers’ throughout its history, at certain junctures more so than others. Make no mistake, this is a necessary declaration—and perhaps these moves might blunt ReformUK’s momentum and appeal to centre-right voters. At this perilous juncture—with fascism resurgent and commandeering history’s most destructive war machine—keeping parties like ReformUK and Germany’s AfD from power is vital. The regime in Washington is openly voicing support for the AfD, and are at least flirting with Nigel Farage, and Sir Keir and Labour tread a precarious tightrope.

Thank you, Canada—for standing firm against the new Nazism, for this victory of reason, and for honouring my great-uncle’s sacrifice

Carney leads the Liberals to victory: a triumph of sanity—and a resounding rejection of Trumpism. {AP 29 April}

Canada holds profound significance for my family—from sheltering Loyalist ancestors (17th-century Puritan stock) post-Revolution, to my Yorkshire-bred 5th great-grandfather fleeing industrial upheaval in early 1800s England. It also protected a portion of my German forebears (most of my Germanic ancestry comes through my paternal grandmother—God rest her soul—who was fully German and Danish. Yet my grandfather's lineage proves equally fascinating—originating from the same region of modern Baden-Württemberg as my great-grandfather, my grandmother's father who settled in New Jersey with his family as a young boy in the 1890s; somehow, I doubt my grandparents ever knew this, a strange twist of fate).

Canada is in my blood. Though I've only visited Quebec and Ontario, I pray to someday muster the energy and wherewithal for that ten-hour drive to Prince Edward Island—to finally walk my ancestors' homeland, that is if average Americans will even be permitted to visit Canada going forward. Not a given, but I digress.

My great-grandfather, Oswald, born in 1903 near Dundas, Kings County, PEI, left for Boston in 1920—joining family and countrymen who'd settled in Lower Mills since the 1870s. Thus explains my now-unfortunate residence behind enemy lines in these former United States. From all accounts I ever heard, Oswald died a miserable and probably abusive drunk in 1965 (and his son, my grandfather, the same in 1989). I knew his widow, my dear great-grandmother Caroline, d.1988, and the primary source of my Puritan/Loyalist lineage, God rest her soul. But it would be Oswald’s younger brother—whom he'd only known as an infant and likely never recalled—that gave his blood for Canada. The family's profoundly unsentimental nature—the whole lot were/are bipolar, myself included—meant I uncovered my great-uncle's wartime deeds through research, not relatives. Precious few survive today, and neither knew nor cared—nor ever will.

My great-uncle Sidney Ulysses (b.1918, Kings County, PEI; pictured above, full name withheld for privacy), a lieutenant corporal, fell on Normandy's shores with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, 9th Infantry Brigade, in the fight against Nazism on 7 June 1944 (click here for an excellent documentation of the unit’s actions on 6 June, and of their specific mission in the massive invasion). He rests at Reviers Canadian War Cemetery, having given his life for our freedom.

Any embrace of right-wing totalitarianism anywhere dishonours his sacrifice. Thank you, Canada, for honouring his memory and rejecting Fascism's resurgence from across your southern border.

P.S. Go Maple Leafs, Go Oilers. First all Canadian Cup final in 36 years, this is the year to make it happen. The Bruins are not in the playoffs, and #Murica does not deserve a Stanley Cup this year.

Sound the alarm: Trump is escalating warnings that all dissent against him will be criminalised in his second presidency

'Totally illegal': Trump escalates rhetoric on outlawing political dissent and criticism. {NBC News 13 October}

I’ve long said that the top priority of Donald Trump and his millions of cult-like followers is to dominate the culture and force their fellow citizens to conform to their will. Criticising him is already dangerous to one’s health in certain areas of this country, or in certain circles, and shall soon outright become illegal everywhere. Pay attention to the way his devout supporters speak: they genuinely want all Americans on their side and react with venomous rage to even the slightest criticism. They see any attack on him as a personal attack on themselves, and like him, they are highly sensitive and willfully ignorant. The United States now revolves around one man, Donald J. Trump, and those of us who refuse to bend the knee to him are in serious trouble. Better pay attention, because he is telling us what he is going to do: millions will be repressed, and millions more are perfectly fine with that. Dark days lie ahead.

UK General Election 2024: a tale of the timeless resilience and efficiency of British governance vs. the decay of American ‘democracy’. Americans ought take heed (but will not, naturally)

Sir Keir Starmer celebrates his electoral victory, 5 July 2024. Photo: PA Media

Though not without blemish, the political tapestry of the UK persists as a marvel of efficiency and justice, as demonstrably proven anew. As an American of WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) blood, I say #Murica must take heed; the state of our system of governance lays bare its flaws as never in history. A fair election, conducted with civility and respect, unfolded in the Motherland, a beacon for how a nation should conduct a fair election. If only Americans were willing to pay attention and were not hellbent on national suicide.

Twelve long hours have I spent as I write this, eyes glued to Sky News, and what anyone who followed mine lead would have a revelation: the electoral process within the realm of Britannia doth function with grace and order, a stark contrast to the sorry state of affairs that plagues the United States. For 237 years, the American constitution hath served as a bulwark, yet time, alas, hath rendered it painfully outdated. It has reached the limits of its usefulness, offering but a tattered defense against the ills of the modern age. Corruption festers at America’s systemic core, a corruption beyond repair. This unwieldy empire, a monstrous polyglot, hath grown too vast to govern as one. The only path forward is a sundering, carving up the land into more manageable pieces.

The British system is time-tested and reliable, and shall function a hundred years and longer. It shall function with unwavering purpose (assuming the planet has not been destroyed years hence). For all the beatings they are enduring, notice how the Tories are not blaming their historic loss on baseless cries of election fraud, nor do they forment rebellion in the vein of a J6-style coup attempt, nor are they calling for white supremacist theocracy.

Relative to our zealous #Cult45 and adjacent Christofascist goons, even Reform UK displays a commendable restraint in matters of societal control. Nigel Farage is a man of eloquent tongue and gentle demeanor, leading a group far less fixated upon social dictates and the micromanagement of peoples’ lives. and I find that he and his bunch are not anywhere near as obsessively focused on social issues and wanting to control all aspects of citizens’ lives. Compared to the current GOP, the Tories of the past fourteen years appear as paragons of reason and competence. Yet, the Britons have proven themselves not entirely lost to the allure of charismatic conmen or the throes of moral hysteria as #Murica is in its twilight time.

The United Kingdom shall still be standing when the United States of America is but a memory. A yearning grips my soul, a longing for a place unseen, yet somehow deeply familiar, a home I've never known in this earthly coil. It has been a while since I last delved into my ancestral research, but I shall do so over the next few days. Take me home.

Eradicating the global fascist plague: a call for the restoration of British global leadership in troubled time on general election day in the UK

The Palace of Westminster. Photo: Britannica.

Today is the day a nation rid itself of the Tory menace that hath plagued their land for fourteen years. I hold not my breath that the US shall follow their lead regarding Trump and the GOP, but I am confident Sir Keir Starmer shall set Britain aright, as he did with the Labour Party after the disgraceful Jeremy Corbyn years.

France teeters on the brink of neo-fascism, and Germany cannot manage all alone. The United States is collapsing, Russia is not retreating from Ukraine, Hungary is drunk on nationalist populism and becoming a grave problem within the EU, China waxeth ever bolder, the Middle East is in flames, and India is swiftly becoming a menace under Modi. The UK must step up once more as leaders of the free world.

I am hopeful that mine two primary ancestral homelands, the UK and Germany, shall lead the resistance against the neo-fascist and theocratic tyranny poisoning the planet. The country fate hath placed me in, and the gaggle of idiots and sadists that populate it, shall not save the world this time. The United States and Canada were noble once, when mine grandfather and uncles fought to defeat the Nazis and Imperial Japan. Yet, the United States hath now become a monster, and Canada is increasingly irrelevant under the leadership of an insufferable, inept narcissist. In mine heart, today I am in England. #Labour #SirKeirStarmer #LeaderOfTheFreeWorld

Body modification cult in the UK another sign that the End of Day must be - hopefully - near

Reflections on President Biden's trip to Ireland

Photo: By Milesoneill - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=27775026

(Written on Friday, April 14) President Biden is in Ballina, Ireland, where I have an ancestral connection myself. Visited there as a toddler (1981), but my memories of it are about non-existent. Watching the live coverage on Sky News, as I have no interest in how the garbage U.S. media is covering it (if they're even bothering.) While I can only claim partial Irish ancestry (around 20% at the very most), my maternal grandmother was an Irish immigrant to America of Scottish and English ancestry. Born in 1910 in Galway (relocating to County Mayo during the first of two or three marriages), she left a daughter behind in Ireland around the time WWII started and then spent the next decade or so living somewhere in England (possibly Manchester.) Whoever my maternal grandfather was, he was apparently from somewhere in Germany (only making me more Germanic and Anglo-Saxon in blood than my paternal line already made me) …

My mother was given up for adoption around the age of four, and was raised by an older Yankee Protestant couple, and I am thankful for that as that woman was a complete wreck of a person (she died in 1992, which was the second of two unfortunate occasions when ‘Auntie Margaret’ - the aforementioned daughter left behind in Ireland - came to these shores for two extended visits; the woman took over my bedroom, and did nothing but bitterly complain about her distaste for America, and being in a Protestant home the whole time) …

As stated above, my memories of Ballina from 42 years-ago are extremely hazy - apart from one incident that will go unspoken except only to say it left a scar for life. I only vaguely recall it being damp, dreary, and rather poor. We did take a cross-country trip to visit the Dublin Zoo, which I am certain was the best part of the trip. In spite of having visited Ireland, my heart and soul is far more connected to England and Germany than any other lands where I have heritage. Many people I grew up around here in the Boston area were purely Irish, and Irish-Catholic at that. By no means do I have as much of a claim to that land as most Irish-Americans have, my spirit, body, and mind are forever WASP. No matter, though, I am still proud to share an ancestral homeland with President Biden, and I am proud that he is honorably representing a not-so-honorable country as ours abroad. Hells, maybe the president and I are distant cousins, and maybe that is why I relate to him. - A.N.
