UK announces stricter immigration policy

photo: AP

{Sky News 12 May} PM: 'Without strong migration rules, we risk becoming an island of strangers'

Sir Keir’s immigration crackdown announcement came with decidedly forced conviction—all stiff delivery and hollow passion, as is his wont. Seems to me, in eternal exile an ocean away, Britain has often been ‘an island of strangers’ throughout its history, at certain junctures more so than others. Make no mistake, this is a necessary declaration—and perhaps these moves might blunt ReformUK’s momentum and appeal to centre-right voters. At this perilous juncture—with fascism resurgent and commandeering history’s most destructive war machine—keeping parties like ReformUK and Germany’s AfD from power is vital. The regime in Washington is openly voicing support for the AfD, and are at least flirting with Nigel Farage, and Sir Keir and Labour tread a precarious tightrope.

Breeders' bonus: the former US considers paying women $5,000 a head to create future climate refugees

stock photo

ABC News: Trump administration looking at $5,000 'baby bonus' to incentivise public to have more children

$5,000 payments to women in the former United States to have babies? Let’s consider: (at least) 8.2 billion people already strain a planet of dwindling resources, amid unprecedented societal destabilisation. Yet this regime proposes to—at staggering public expense—artificially inflate the population, exacerbate the national debt (despite the GOP’s current austerity posturing), divert funds from healthcare and education, intensify housing crises, and reduce women to reproductive vessels. All so these unwanted children can inherit a world of climate catastrophe and mass impoverishment. A masterstroke from these natalist fanatics, let me tell you. Frankly, it’d be preferable to pay the majority of today’s Americans—demonstrably unfit to parent—*not* to procreate.

American women are fleeing the institution of marriage faster than rats from a sinking cruise liner—and who could possibly blame them?

American women are fleeing the institution of marriage faster than rats from a sinking cruise liner—and who could possibly blame them? The average American male is nothing more than an uncouth, slovenly buffoon with the emotional intelligence of a dim-witted teenager and the manners of a baboon raised by wolves.

Half of them are one minor traffic incident away from homicidal rage. Simultaneously, they worship a geriatric property developer with a synthetic coiffure as their paragon of masculinity. It would be utterly laughable were it not for the tragic consequences we are enduring.

Not that today's young women are without fault, mind you—many harbour expectations so fantastical they'd make a Disney princess blush with embarrassment. Meanwhile, increasing numbers of men are either seeking companionship abroad or embracing monastic solitude. I cannot say I blame them, either; after seven failed relationships over the decades, I am now happily one of their number.

The most promising development in all this dreary societal collapse is that Americans are finally questioning whether the whole marriage-and-reproduction charade is worth the bother, breaking free from societal expectations.

The stark truth—which, even now, many steadfastly refuse to acknowledge—is that despite this catastrophic deficit of collective intelligence, we continue to propagate our species with reckless abandon. This beleaguered orb now groans under the weight of at least 8.2 billion human parasites—likely far more if those Finnish researchers I posted about in the past few days are correct.

In my birth year of 1978, the global population was less than half today's grotesque figure. Yet somehow civilisation managed to function without the additional four billion mediocre contributors to our species' dubious legacy!

A dramatic population decline might be precisely the remedy this suffocating planet requires to recuperate from our incessant pillaging. One need only examine European history—after the Black Death eliminated approximately half the population, a veritable renaissance of prosperity followed in the decades and centuries after. Humanity desperately required a major reset then, just as it does now.

US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan releases 1,800 pages of evidence in the election conspiracy case. Trump calls her ‘the most evil person’ for doing so and accuses her of election meddling

Trump calls judge 'evil' for releasing case files before election. {BBC 18 October}

Donald Trump knows, as well as we do, that nothing has or will change anyone’s mind. His legions of supporters shall show up in sufficient numbers, even if he were to ‘shoot a man on Fifth Avenue’. No revelations, not even the long-rumoured ‘pee tape’ supposedly in Putin’s possession, are going to tear #Murica away from their beloved god-king. So why not just keep his mouth shut instead of spewing such foolish and self-harming words? (How wise is it to call a judge presiding over your case an ‘evil person’?) Impossible, I grant—shutting up would require the self-discipline he so utterly lacks. The endless wailing, whining, and casting of blame we have long witnessed have only bound him closer to that large swath of the American people comprising #Cult45, and emboldened his Christofascist allies and enablers. Thus, he shall not change his course—expect more name-calling and tantrums to follow.

Recent headlines

Trump, at 78 years old, is now cancelling interviews, citing exhaustion - So, when will the American people, the media, the GOP, and (especially) his own Democratic Party apologise to President Biden for throwing the most pathetic mass tantrum in US political history this past summer after the 81 year old President had a less than ideal debate performance? Yet Trump can be 'exhausted', and even many of his detractors are deluded into thinking he still has some vigour left. I know—no apology to President Biden will be coming from any of them. What absolute f**king hypocrites and liars polluting this country. {Politico 18 October}

Homicides committed by minors soared by 65% between 2016 and 2022, even as overall juvenile crime declined - Is anyone (outside of #Cult45) shocked that this is happening against the backdrop of a Trump-poisoned country, where violence and ignorance are celebrated to a greater degree than at any point in US history? {USA Today 18 October}

The online reaction from fans to the apparent suicide of a former ‘boy band’ star—expressed through emojis and reaction gifs—reveals a younger generation that is ‘incapable of feeling anything other than snide detachment.’ {Ryan Coogan 17 October}

Post-debate Reuters/IPSOS poll: Harris fails to surpass fifty percent, with eleven percent still undecided, even after Trump’s notably poor performance

A political cartoon lampooning Donald Trump supporters. Illustration: Monte Wolverton

While I do not place too much weight on polls, here is proof this election is going down to the wire, regardless of how low Donald Trump will sink. It is crucial to always acknowledge that Trump commands the largest and most loyal political cult in American history, and Kamala Harris, as a mixed-race woman, faces the additional challenge of running in a country that harbours deep and violent prejudices against women of colour.

This may not be the optimistic spin most reading this want to hear, nor am I at all happy about having to say it, but it serves as a reminder that in a more rational, just, and moral society, this race would not be close, and a vile and criminal figure like Donald Trump would never have risen to power in the first place.

I have said it before, and I shall say it again: we have not yet witnessed the full extent to which White America will go to avoid being governed by a coloured woman. Trump’s most devoted supporters will stand by him, no matter what he says or does or how frail he becomes. Prepare accordingly, to whatever extent possible, for mass bloodshed is on the horizon.

Kremlin prepares law to bind the wombs of Russia's daughters and essentially force them to give birth

Photo: Natalia Kolesnikova/AFP/Getty Images.

An extreme fervor for fertility amongst those who cloak themselves in piety and nationalism - and predominantly amongst men - is quickly becoming rampant in #Murica. Five minutes on Twitter will confirm that this is a major tenet of the Christian nationalists. From whence springs this obsession? Where they get nearly all their propaganda and marching from, of course, Mother Russia. Eight billion people inhabit this mortal coil, far more than was ever needed or is sustainable: yet fascists everywhere repeat the same refrain of 'we need more babies’. Indeed, Russia’s birth rates are lower than those of much of the world, but the last thing this world needs is any more Orcs. {Daily Wrap 28/6 - Kremlin targets child-free ideology: new laws to boost birth rates}

Law enforcement in the U.S. seized over 115 million fentanyl pills in 2023, up from 71 million in 2022, and only 50,000 in 2017

Darwin Brandis/iStock

Fentanyl, with potency exceeding fiftyfold that of heroin, is primarily manufactured in laboratories in India and China before clandestine entry into the U.S., typically via Mexico. According to this DW article, opioid addiction is far less rife in European nations endowed with robust and functioning healthcare systems, evidenced by a mere forty-nine (49) recorded fentanyl overdose deaths in the European Union in all of 2021. In stark contrast, the U.S. witnessed more than 200 deaths per day in 2022, and that may be a conservative estimate.

Nearly every solution enacted at federal, state, and local levels to combat the opioid crisis has been punitive and counterproductive. I dread America will persist in this approach for years to come, reflective of a society divided and politicians, particularly on the right and within the GOP, increasingly keen to exacerbate hardships for those their respective factions deem as societal outcasts. More needless suffering, deaths, and imprisonment shall ensue, and #Murica will become more and more of a s**thole country.

MORE ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE THAT ANTI-SEMITISM AND CONSPIRACISM ARE GOING MAINSTREAM IN #MURICA

Assorted American Nazis at the Charlottesville rally of 2017. Photo: Chet Strange/Getty Images

If there was ever a disheartening indication to me that humanity is facing dark times, it was today's discovery that a former girlfriend of mine - once the epitome of sweetness and kindness, with whom I shared many years - now disseminates QAnon conspiracy theories and virulent anti-Semitic content on her Twitter (X) account. I had been aware since 2016 of her support for Trump. We parted ways in 2017, partly due to our political disparities (i.e., even the most rational of Trump supporters morph into big babies whenever their idol is criticised). However, I never could have imagined that this woman would eventually embrace such ancient, hateful beliefs as the blood libel.

Trumpism is an incremental mental disorder, one that typically starts off innocently enough for most, but ultimately consumes the hearts and minds of its followers, leading towards hateful ideologies such as Nazism. However, it's not just Trump supporters who exhibit concerning tendencies; it is all the leftists who are quick to blame Israel and our own government for the actions of Islamist extremists, true to their long-standing and petulant refusal of over twenty years to acknowledge the true threat posed by Islamist terrorists.Anti-Semitism is becoming increasingly prevalent across the political spectrum, and it achieves no positive outcomes or offers any solutions except more hate and violence.

Large segments of the American populace are increasingly turning against Israel, blaming the victims and siding with the oppressors (Hamas), while simultaneously Vladimir Putin's popularity among Americans soars along with anti-Ukrainian sentiment. What kind of monsters are Americans becoming? I find it increasingly difficult to recognize this nation and much of its populace, and genuinely feel as though I am trapped in a bizarre fever dream. Unfortunately, these dire circumstances will only worsen, particularly as the younger generations come of age, their brains addled by (among other things) video games and Tik Tok. The irreversible decline and eventual disintegration of the United States are inevitable now, as the election of 2016 opened the Gates of Hades. There is no saviour in sight to prevent our self-inflicted demise (if America is the new Babylon of prophecy, as I’ve long suspected, then the Bible tells us that God is not going to save it); nobody will be left to pick up the shattered pieces when the inevitable collapse occurs.

What fresh hell is this? Latest CNN poll has President Biden and Donald Trump essentially tied in a likely 2024 match-up, with considerable majorities of Democrats declaring their desire for an alternative candidate

Julio Cortez/AP
CNN - Biden faces negative job ratings and concerns about his age as he gears up for 2024

What a collection of malcontented and deluded fools the inhabitants of these United States are becoming. Disloyal Democratic voters fret over President Biden - thoroughly misled by a treasonous media, and also by the president's grandstanding political adversaries - whilst the right-wing half of this land pleads for Fascism. In the meantime, President Biden's actual track record hath been one of accomplishments. The mere preservation of stability in this decaying realm is an achievement in itself. Left or right, the American populace craves and demands amusement in their politics, and that is the genuine reason why President Biden doth not enjoy greater popularity than he currently possesses. Is this who we truly desire to be? A congregation of monkeys within a zoo flinging excrement at one another, insisting that we be spared from boredom even for a fleeting moment?

Even after enduring the myriad trials of the past few years - a pandemic, a violent coup attempt, economic turmoil, riots, and so forth - it is evident that America finds itself in a state of sheer hostility and a heedless disregard for truth and morality. We have come to esteem our frivolous diversions and causing harm to others above all else; even above the very existence of our republic; even above the state of our very souls. As the writer of this piece in The Bulwark doth declare, our political landscape hath devolved into 'a twisted reality show that elevates outrage, insults, and cruelty in a spirit of sadistic fun,’ and we take pleasure in it as such. Should Joe Biden not be re-elected in the year 2024, and Donald Trump re-ascend to power, it shall signify the end. History shall chronicle the people of these United States in this era as being equally self-destructive and bereft of virtue as those who dwelt in Sodom and Gomorrah. I do not mince words when I declare that I am filled with shame to be an American in our present age. But not of our president.

Junior GOP presidential hopefuls make noise about slashing Social Security and Medicare

AI generated image

As I have grown older and further away from the absurd right-wing populism and conspiracism of my younger years, I see more clearly that one need not be a Communist or a Marxist - or even think of oneself as any variant of a ‘socialist,’ which I never have and still do not - to understand that rich and civilized nations should have basic safety nets in place to prevent its citizens from going into poverty. European nations typically take far better care of their seniors and vulnerable, and their living standards (by and large) only continue to rise or stay at a high level, while America’s living standards have been plummeting in recent decades. In this country, we have only the most basic of social safety nets for citizens, and even that is far too much for many Republicans and their enablers. Earlier this year, during the contentious debt ceiling negotiations, more than a few House Republicans and especially those in the ‘freedom caucus’ were growing quite bold in their proposals to suffocate and drain Social Security and Medicare. Three of Donald Trump’s 2024 GOP rivals - namely, Ron DeSantis, Mike Pence, and Nikki Haley - are again testing the waters in hopes of bringing public opinion around to incrementally ending these vital programs

Younger Americans are already having an extremely harder time, all across the board, in getting ahead in life than previous generations, and they are going to have nothing to fall back upon when they reach their senior years. And I hate to say it, but I sense that many in the ‘Boomer’ generation (so long as they are still getting theirs), along with some of the more callous among my generation (Gen X) and even among the ‘millennial’ generation (who will suffer themselves) are quite okay with all that. That callousness is what the likes of Pence and DeSantis are counting on. And Donald Trump as well, even if he at least has enough sense to know it is still bad for business to hint at anything that would threaten senior citizens and the vulnerable. {WP 7/22: Trump's GOP rivals open door to cutting Social Security for younger people}

#NeverTrump #NeverDeSantis: Ukrainian-American voters angry at the GOP’s 2024 forerunners for their pro-Putin stances

Mikhail Klimentyev/Sputnik/AFP/Getty Images

Republicans are really shooting themselves in the foot by doing or saying anything that will curry favor with their party’s toxic and compromised leader and his toxic supporters. Or, for that matter, being reflexively against anything President Biden supports. FTA: ‘The votes of Ukrainian-Americans - traditionally a Republican-leaning bloc - could have an outsize impact on the 2024 general election, according to some lawmakers, strategists and advocates, plus a Reuters analysis of U.S. census data.

While the number of Americans who identify as being of Ukrainian descent is relatively small at about 1 million, they are densely distributed in a string of unusually competitive areas where their votes could potentially be decisive.’ {Reuters 5/20}

‘Tiredness of life’ has become more common among seniors in Western countries

AI generated image via Hotpot API

As Republicans move to end Social Security, is it any wonder there are not mobs with pitchforks outside out of every local GOP headquarters in this country, when the elderly and disabled are of such an overall low priority? FTA: ‘The fact that this problem is common enough for researchers to debate it may suggest that modern life has shut older people out of western society. Perhaps elders are no longer revered for their wisdom and experience. But it’s not inevitable. In Japan, age is seen as a spring or rebirth after a busy period of working and raising children. One study found older adults in Japan showed higher scores on personal growth compared with midlife adults, whereas the opposite age pattern was found in the US.

'Surgeon and medical professor Atul Gawande argues that in western societies, medicine has created the ideal conditions for transforming ageing into a “long, slow fade”. He believes quality of life has been overlooked as we channel our resources towards biological survival. This is unprecedented in history. Tiredness of life may be evidence of the cost.' {The Conversation 5/03}

Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and the hard truth about mankind

Laura Boushnak/NYT

Explosion kills over fifty Ukrainian prisoners of war at a Russian-operated detention camp in Donetsk; Russia says Ukraine used ‘precision weapons supplied by the United States’ - Most people are not good people: The hard lesson we all need to be learning, but too many of us simply refuse to acknowledge. Over and over in this post-truth world, I keep futilely asking myself: ‘How can anyone believe such obvious crap?’ It applies to everything having to do with Donald Trump’s political career: The most obvious conman of all-time that any kindergartner should be able to see through. People of reason were baffled by his ascendancy, but Trump proved to be crazy like a fox. Trump understood that millions would support and vigorously defend him to absurd degrees if he told those people what they wanted to hear, and presented himself as their protector and weapon against the rest of a society they hate. Donald Trump gives the defiant license to be their true, awful selves. For this, he has their undying loyalty, and now they are on the cusp of cementing #Murica as a Christofascist state. Vladimir Putin and Russia know that people will willingly believe an obvious lie, demand others accept said lie as fact, and even kill and die for it if said lie appeals to an individual’s innate biases and desires. Confirmation bias. If a Trump or a Putin tell their followers the sky is yellow, their followers are going to say the sky is yellow and anyone who disagrees is a lunatic and a traitor. Ask oneself, why were all the characters in the fairy tale afraid to tell the Emperor he has no clothes? Why do the words of Voltaire - ‘Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities’ - resonate through the ages, and why are people so eager to adopt absurdities as their guiding principles to begin with? ‘Because, f**k you, that’s why.’ Yeah, in a nutshell, that really is it: Ignorance, resentment, tribalism, and an inherent lust for violence and domination. The majority of human beings in most any given time and place are not overly enlightened creatures - to varying degrees of degradation, of course; #Murica now is boiling on that scale. Grievance is the most powerful drug on earth, and reality and reason matter not to the aggrieved. Now, if only those who are of reason, empathy, and intelligence would stop their own pretending, and finally put a rest to this obnoxious lie we enforce upon ourselves: The lie that says people are basically good by nature. NO, just the opposite: The entire purpose of civilization is to contain our base instincts, else we wipe ourselves out and all ceases to be. (New York Times 7/30)

‘The mouth of a bear.’ Ukrainian refugees sent to Russia - Detailing how desperate Ukrainians from devastated eastern regions are lured, or otherwise compelled, into Russia. Often forced to be propaganda tools, although just as often left abandoned thousands of miles from home with no money or documents. Some ordinary Russians, however, are displaying kindness and bravery in helping the refugees find their way out of the belly of the beast. (AP 7/20)

The Kremlin is bribing school teachers to move to occupied parts of Ukraine, in order that students get a ‘corrected’ (propagandized) education - Our Republicans, particularly in the Southern U.S., are learning well from their Russian masters: The far-right, heretical Christofascist crusade to control what people see, learn, think, and feel becomes more violent and aggressive with each day. The attack on education and the anti-intellectual undertones are all by design. Those who are adhering to this radical ideology, wherever in the world they are, need to do some real soul searching. It is not God who they are serving with their zealotry, and His very first commandment is mere lip service to them, at very best. (Washington Post 7/18)

A second wave of Russians flee Putin’s regime - No exact numbers available, but it is well into the hundreds of thousands and could exceed a million in short order. Smart Russians are seeing the writing on the wall: Russia is doomed, and there is no future there except for more tyranny, misery, and death. The same is going to occur in #Murica once the Fascists have consolidated their power completely, the exodus will be epic (and may already be starting, at least internally, as ‘red states’ become more authoritarian and intrusive into the private lives of citizens.) Europe has been overrun in recent years by refugees from the Middle East, and now Ukraine and Russia, and it will not be able to accommodate millions of North Americans, to say nothing of millions escaping from Africa, India, etc. in large part due to climate change. Where is everybody going to live on this planet if most of it is uninhabitable? The answer, of course, is that most will no longer be living, period. (CNBC 7/14)

Russian state media gave an inordinate amount of attention to the ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests in Ottawa earlier this year, and Fox News followed suit - Excerpt: ‘(R)ecently, Russia has focused less on tipping the scale towards specific electoral outcomes. Rather, according to an FBI official who spoke out earlier this year, the country has focused on sowing chaos and distrust abroad. “The primary objective is not to create a particular version of the truth but rather cloud the truth and erode our ability to find it, creating a sentiment that no narrative or news source can be trusted at all,” David Porter, an assistant section chief with the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, told a U.S. election security conference in March. “To put it simply, in this space, Russia wants to watch us tear ourselves apart.”’ (Global News 7/13)

The Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation releases a list of American public figures who are propagating Vladimir Putin’s lies and distortions - The list includes Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), and the ‘journalist’ Glenn Greenwald of the New York Times. The next step is placing international sanctions on these people, and expanding the list to include all Americans - lawmakers, media figures, and rank-and-file, private citizens alike; the entire fifth column - who can reasonably be proven to be spreading disinformation and propaganda straight out of Putin’s troll factories. It is war; enemies of humanity will either be stopped, or humanity will be slaughtered in numbers that may make most past mass atrocities pale in comparison. (Newsweek 7/26)

Jeffrey Sonnenfeld/Steven Tian: Actually, Russia’s economy is imploding - It’d be nice if Western economists wouldn’t go by the Russian government’s fabricated numbers when analyzing the state of Russia’s economy since heavy sanctions were put in place. The sanctions are working; albeit, it is clear that Putin is willing to do tremendous, even fatal, harm to his own nation and people to satiate his grievances. Advice to any Russian who may already be suffering a degree or two of economic deprivation: Get the hell out of that s**thole now, before you are all starving and your leader has to regularly threaten nations with nuclear annihilation unless said countries provide food and other aid - see the last thirty years or so of North Korea. Russia’s only real advantage over us is psychological warfare, and on that count they are winning and it is a devastating advantage to have. Vladimir Putin has committed great psychological harm upon the collective psyche of America with his propaganda war. As with the old Soviet Union, the facade will collapse in time. America and Russia are dying nations, and the Fascists of both intuitively know they are heading to the ashbins of history, hence their desperation to reverse course at all costs. (Foreign Policy 7/22)

Senators strike a bipartisan deal on legislation to overhaul the Electoral Count Act in order to prevent future coup attempts - For once, the clowns in this chamber are doing what all Americans should be demanding of them. But does it go far enough? (NBC News 7/20)

New findings detail Trump plan to use Census for partisan gain; A proposal to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, struck down by the Supreme Court, would have intended to create an undercount favoring the GOP - I’m not certain non-citizens should be counted toward apportioning representatives, either, but am certain that the cabal’s objections were solely to benefit themselves at the expense of everybody else. It has never been this apparent: The barely-unspoken fear and understanding among much of white America, and nearly all who identify as Republicans, is that we are being replaced and we must act now to repress those replacing us. I have no interest in seeing my race perish, nor am I very fearful that Whites are going to go extinct in my lifetime or in the lifetimes of anyone alive now. Let us remember, that at no point in history have Caucasians ever been a majority of people on this planet. Nor are we entitled to anything; all of that is in the hands of God, and anyone attempting to speak for God is committing heresy. The Republican Party is not entitled to eternal power, and neither is the Democratic Party. The two-party deathgrip on America is choking the life out of it. (New York Times 7/20)

‘The expanded use of drop boxes for mailed ballots during the 2020 election did not lead to any widespread problems, according to an Associated Press survey of state election officials across the U.S. that revealed no cases of fraud, vandalism or theft that could have affected the results.’ (AP 7/17)

Study: People in Republican counties have higher death rates than those in Democratic counties - From a point of relative parity in 2001, mortality rates between ‘red’ and ‘blue’ regions have diverged. And dramatically so since COVID-19 appeared. Political environments are a ‘core determinant of health.’ (Scientific American 7/18)

Dolphins behave better after listening to Bach and Beethoven, study finds - Great insights into the behaviors of a fascinating species. Honestly, I believe this to be true of human beings. In fact, it is rather obvious. Nobody starts a ‘mosh pit’ at the symphony. (Classic FM 7/14)

Ted Gioia essay on old rock/pop music continuing to outsell current popular music, and other aspects of pop culture are looking backward instead of forward. Why?  - Culture has stagnated. Society itself has stagnated, and people are growing cold and soulless; the arts in any given time and place always reveal who a people are. In 2022, we are damn ugly; we are in collapse, and all but maybe the very youngest among us will see any sort of revival in our lifetimes. If there is any revival, and it’s a huge ‘if.’ (Substack 7/14)

The stark realization that the America and world I came of age in is no longer

Jose Luis Magana/AP

Donald Trump seriously could shoot an entirely innocent person in the middle of 5th Avenue, and his supporters would rejoice, while those who merely just tolerate him and other right-wing extremist GOP politicians out of fervent opposition to the Democratic Party would twist themselves into pretzels trying to downplay, ignore, or justify it. The rest of us would be justifiably furious, as we always are every single time the s.o.b. does or says something rotten; as usual, it’d basically be to no avail. At this point, Trump would not be charged if he were to maliciously, and beyond any shadow of doubt, literally murder another individual. The only reason the DOJ has not and will not charge him with a multitude of crimes is the knowledge that #Cult45 will officially kick off the new civil war in earnest the moment it happens. Know what we are dealing with, for the American people are showing their true colors like never before. America today is 100% unrecognizable from what it was in my post-war childhood in the 1980s and 1990s. Back then, preserving our democratic values was sacrosanct, as was upholding the global order that so many had shed blood to achieve in World War II. Now is a period where Americans have turned exclusively inward and are only - key word - concerned with their grievances against one another. We’re not going to survive; the damage has been done, and was self-inflicted. Maybe someday the tide will turn again toward relative peace and prosperity, but not in this generation or the next, and not before millions are slaughtered.

Poll: About half of Americans say Trump should be charged for his role in the January 6 Insurrection - Major caveats here, starting with the fact that polls are never entirely reliable. But, with the possible exception of Nixon following Watergate, it would have been unthinkable for most any American - let alone 48% of the public, and 58% overall believing he bears at least some level responsibility - to want to see a current or former president of either party put in prison prior to Trump. Paradoxically, what is wrong with the other 52%? To be fair, in this poll ‘only’ 31% actually responded that they do not believe Trump should face any charges for January 6 and another 20% somehow don’t have an opinion. 31% is a large number, just shy of one-third, and to take a ‘guesstimate,’ the ultra-right, nationalist populist bunch probably are roughly a third to 40% of the population. So, this poll may very well be accurate; one-third of the population is more than enough for any tyrannical movement to conquer an already-divided country, and that is exactly what is continuing to happen here. #Cult45 - has been radicalized, and we face a situation here very similar to Iran in the mid-to-late ‘70s: President Biden finds himself in the role of the Shah, while Trump is playing the role of Ayatollah Khomeini; and Ayatollah Trump has millions of acolytes prepared for revolution against modernity, and to serve as enforcers of the crackdown on civil society that is already underway. Liz Cheney, not mincing words - ‘We are confronting a domestic threat we have never faced before. And that is a former president who is attempting to unravel the foundations of our constitutional republic. And he is aided by Republican leaders and elected officials who have made themselves willing hostages to this dangerous and irrational man.’ (NPR 6/30)

Supreme Court rules the president is entitled to overturn his predecessor’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ immigration policy - So, as #Cult45 has itself had a love fest with the high court in the past week, how do they now reconcile with this ruling disobeying their orange messiah? (The Guardian 6/30)

Russia appears to have defaulted on its international debt - Due to a number of factors at play, Russia is not facing certain economic doomsday, but none of this can be making the lives of ordinary Russians any easier. (New York Times 6/27)

Guns now the leading cause of death for American children, and America is broken beyond repair, but at least we’re not Russia

Marco Bello/Reuters

CDC: Guns are now the leading cause of death for American children - Nothing will be done. The far-right makes up, approximately, 40% of the overall population, and upwards of 80% or more of the rural population. They are, by far, the largest percentage of gun owners, and their ranks include many police officers and military personnel. The Constitution is written in such a way that privileges small states and rural areas over cities. The Supreme Court is heavily biased in their favor. Most of the state legislatures are controlled by the GOP, and they are gerrymandering congressional maps anywhere and everywhere they can get away with doing so. They may not control academia, the entertainment industry, or pop culture in general (though they are working hard to change all of that), but politically and legally they have this country by the proverbial balls. January 6, 2021, was just a taste of what is to come, and the rank-and-file of #Cult45 are just waiting for the word to begin slaughtering the rest of us. I’ve been saying all along, dating back years, that America is a lost cause. Yet we still have to fight: After all, we will eventually have to give an account to God of whether we stood up to evil, or helped facilitate it. I am not anti-gun and would be opposed to just outlawing them altogether; but some basic measures to ensure to the greatest extent possible that only trained, qualified, and law-abiding individuals are allowed to possess them would not be an ‘infringement’ on the Second Amendment. No private citizen needs to own weapons of war, such as an AR-15. All rights come with responsibilities and limits, so do tell why gun ownership should be exempt? But, as I said, nothing is going to happen, except more bloodshed. America today is akin to places like Iran, much of the Middle East, Russia, etc., where ignorance and superstition is increasingly becoming enforced, and intellect and reason are gradually being suppressed. Go down fighting. (Axios 5/26)

Damon Winter/NYT

Michelle Goldberg: America may be broken beyond repair - Do ‘we simply stumble on, helpless as things keep getting worse?’ That has been the state of affairs for a couple of decades now, but simmering rage can only build up for so long before it explodes. It is very hard to see any scenario now where the country can heal these riffs and be held together. Therefore, the question becomes: Is this union worth persevering, or would it be for the best for the United States to be dissolved and a series of new, smaller states to emerge from its ashes? If it is the latter, there will be extreme disparities between the new states that emerge in terms of their economies, laws, standards of living, and so forth; and there will be bloody wars between some of these states from time-to-time. If one looks at the history of Europe over the centuries - and even within the last 100 years - borders are constantly changing, alliances come and go, and those processes always entail great conflict and bloodshed. So, just breaking America up does not guarantee there will no longer be strife between the peoples of this vast continent. But it would appear people in New England, or California, or in Chicago no longer want to be ruled over by people from the rural South and Midwest, and vice versa. Each side wants to impose their lifestyles and values (or lack thereof) upon the other, neither is in the least bit interested any longer in compromise and going along to get along. Something will have to give. (New York Times 5/27)

Russians face prospect of Soviet-style shortages as sanctions bite - Excerpt: ‘Stung by Western sanctions, Russia is starting to devolve into a secondhand economy dependent on poor substitutes, where shortages are stirring memories of the consumer wasteland that was the Soviet Union. While it may be able to find new purveyors for some Western-made goods and components in friendly countries such as China and India, Russia is increasingly determined to make its own — returning to policies of import substitution that yielded a vast, if globally uncompetitive, industrial complex before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Already, Moscow is facing serious challenges.’ (Washington Post 5/26)

Fourteen warning signs that you are living in a society without a counterculture - Serious food for thought here. We are not living in a vibrant culture that rewards independent thought and creativity. I think that’s something we all should be ashamed of, and be working to fix. (Ted Gioia 5/28)

The United States is dying by its own hand, being killed by those who, on one hand, claim to love it most, and yet also falsely claim to be most betrayed by it. Putin’s stooges, wittingly or unwittingly. F**k you

Wishing all my friends who are moms, and to all moms, a wonderful Mother’s Day. And extra special blessings to all the Ukrainian mothers. #StopPutin #StandUpForUkraine Слава Україні

EA Worldview

I believe we are maybe two, three years away from the vast majority of white Americans rising up and explicitly demanding the ethnic cleansing of the United States. Led on by Donald Trump and the GOP. There is no way this union stands much longer, its people hate each other too much for that to be possible. There is no other logical end game for this extreme right brainwashing that has been so successful in destroying any semblance of unity - whatever that may or may not have entailed beforehand - in this dying country. And when the moment of the ultimate right-wing coup arrives, and it will, the nationalist populist alliance will sacrifice useful idiots such as Clarence Thomas, Candace Owens, Dan Bongino (is he black?), and the braying stereotypes known as Diamond and Silk. Bank on that, they are all useful idiots and each lower than an ‘Uncle Tom.’ We are in for ugly times in this Fascist hellhole, especially once #Murica finally gets done s**ting on President Biden - the best president this nation has had in decades, that an entire country is determined to undermine - and succeeds in pushing him aside. I hold zero hope in this nation’s people and this country has outlived its usefulness - once considerable and beneficial to global order - to humanity ...

I am begging President Joe Biden to assert his authority over this country. A country full of whining a**holes, enough already! Mr. President, address this persistent unpopularity in opinion polls, and set the people straight! My one complaint with this man is that he is, usually (there have been wonderful exceptions), too damn nice. Crack the whip, Mr. Biden, get #Murica in line. Marital law if need be, these malcontents are begging for it. Supporting Putin while they can see Ukrainian civilians are being targeted and killed, my god. How could I possibly stand with the people of my country, as a believer in God, when they cheer on such evil toward innocents and hate their own leader without due cause?

Christian nationalism and white supremacy are going to make an ostentatious last stand in #Murica - already doing so to a degree - and it’s going to be our final undoing as a nation. The people who claim to love this country the most will be most responsible for its demise …

Why hate modern #Murica, redneck nation? Have any of its most fervent adherents done even a single positive thing for this country in years? Truly? Do they do anything but express hate and engage in mindless tribalism, as if these were the Middle Ages? Does the @GOP really have anything of value, or no value, to offer this country, f**king airheads and useless dolts they are? Will the other party ever grow a spine and denounce populism for this country’s own good? Will the people of this country, so out-of-control and full of hate and ignorance, ever be brought to bear and listen to reason? I feel it so strongly in the air, people just want to start killing each other, and that is going to happen, soon. For my own personal safety, and for the sake of all that is good and holy, I pray God that He will bring this evil nation to its bloody knees. Seriously, 99% of you are f**king evil, America, and my God is going to make you pay for your evil.

NYT: The era of cheap and plenty may be ending - The end began long before 2020, but that is when it began in earnest; when the real hurt began settling in. America’s best years are behind it, and inflation is here to stay. Vladimir Putin is not helping matters any. Excerpt: ‘Starting late in 2020, prices for washing machines, couches and other big products jumped sharply as production limitations collided with high demand. Inflation has only accelerated since. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has further snarled supply chains, raising the prices of gas and other commodities in recent months and helping to push the Fed’s closely watched inflation index up 6.6 percent over the year through March. That is the fastest pace of inflation since 1982, and price gains are touching the highest level in decades across many advanced economies, including the eurozone and Britain.’ (New York Times 5/03)
