Thank you, Canada—for standing firm against the new Nazism, for this victory of reason, and for honouring my great-uncle’s sacrifice

Carney leads the Liberals to victory: a triumph of sanity—and a resounding rejection of Trumpism. {AP 29 April}

Canada holds profound significance for my family—from sheltering Loyalist ancestors (17th-century Puritan stock) post-Revolution, to my Yorkshire-bred 5th great-grandfather fleeing industrial upheaval in early 1800s England. It also protected a portion of my German forebears (most of my Germanic ancestry comes through my paternal grandmother—God rest her soul—who was fully German and Danish. Yet my grandfather's lineage proves equally fascinating—originating from the same region of modern Baden-Württemberg as my great-grandfather, my grandmother's father who settled in New Jersey with his family as a young boy in the 1890s; somehow, I doubt my grandparents ever knew this, a strange twist of fate).

Canada is in my blood. Though I've only visited Quebec and Ontario, I pray to someday muster the energy and wherewithal for that ten-hour drive to Prince Edward Island—to finally walk my ancestors' homeland, that is if average Americans will even be permitted to visit Canada going forward. Not a given, but I digress.

My great-grandfather, Oswald, born in 1903 near Dundas, Kings County, PEI, left for Boston in 1920—joining family and countrymen who'd settled in Lower Mills since the 1870s. Thus explains my now-unfortunate residence behind enemy lines in these former United States. From all accounts I ever heard, Oswald died a miserable and probably abusive drunk in 1965 (and his son, my grandfather, the same in 1989). I knew his widow, my dear great-grandmother Caroline, d.1988, and the primary source of my Puritan/Loyalist lineage, God rest her soul. But it would be Oswald’s younger brother—whom he'd only known as an infant and likely never recalled—that gave his blood for Canada. The family's profoundly unsentimental nature—the whole lot were/are bipolar, myself included—meant I uncovered my great-uncle's wartime deeds through research, not relatives. Precious few survive today, and neither knew nor cared—nor ever will.

My great-uncle Sidney Ulysses (b.1918, Kings County, PEI; pictured above, full name withheld for privacy), a lieutenant corporal, fell on Normandy's shores with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, 9th Infantry Brigade, in the fight against Nazism on 7 June 1944 (click here for an excellent documentation of the unit’s actions on 6 June, and of their specific mission in the massive invasion). He rests at Reviers Canadian War Cemetery, having given his life for our freedom.

Any embrace of right-wing totalitarianism anywhere dishonours his sacrifice. Thank you, Canada, for honouring his memory and rejecting Fascism's resurgence from across your southern border.

#DDay 1944: The liberation of Europe from Nazi tyranny commenced with the Allied invasion of occupied France

Today, we commemorate all those who stormed the Normandy beaches on the 80th anniversary of the pivotal event in the 20th century. Their bravery and sacrifice secured a period of relative peace, prosperity, and stability that lasted up until recent years. I fear a conflict of this scale and with such perilous consequences will have to be fought again. And I worry that this time, #Murica might not be on the righteous side. Heaven help us all.

Macron wins French presidential election in an apparent landslide

Christophe Ena/AP

Emmanuel Macron easily reelected in France, turning back far-right populist Marine Le Pen - Approximately 58%. That is a decisive win, far larger than anyone seemed to expect. If forced to choose between these two, #Murica would probably have elected the Fascist bitch. Vive le France, at least somewhere in the world sanity still prevails. (AP 4/24)

Former Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch dies at 88 - The man was a fairly visible figure during his many years on Capitol Hill. The longest-serving Republican ever in the upper chamber. He had quirks, but was not a total nutjob like the sorry bunch up there now. Remember, it was Orrin Hatch’s retirement that led to Mitt Romney winning the seat. Thus becoming a major thorn in Trump’s side. (AP 4/24)

Putin moves ever closer to unleashing nuclear armageddon, his mercenaries are framing the French for the killings of innocent Africans, a new Ebola outbreak, and more

Today, April 24, is the Orthodox faith's Easter Sunday - Just as they celebrate Christmas nearly two weeks after the rest of Christendom, so it is here. May this Easter be filled with Russian blood flowing through the landscapes of Ukraine. Слава Україні. (ABC Australia 4/15)

‘Russia said on Saturday it plans to deploy its newly tested Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, capable of mounting nuclear strikes against the United States, by autumn’ - Putin has warned Western nations that any outside attempts to stop his brutality ‘will lead you to such consequences that you have never encountered in your history.’ Does he actually *want* nuclear armageddon, and to bring down the rest of the world alongside his God-forsaken country? The safe bet would be to rule it a likelihood, and yours truly wishes he could be more optimistic. (Reuters 4/23)

Russian mercenaries, employed by a firm known as the Wagner Group, are burying dead bodies near an army base in the African nation of Mali as part of a PsyOp to smear France - A prime example of how the Russians continually fool conspiracy theorists, nationalist populists, hard leftists, and all predisposed to their anti-Western propaganda. Actual people are slaughtered, lives sacrificed, sometimes for no other purpose than information warfare. Pioneering and utilizing ever-evolving technological and psychological tactics - or committing old-fashioned, pure genocide - and always denying, deflecting, and accusing their enemies of that which they are guilty of. The scariest part is their gaslighting works all too well. It works because it exploits all of humanity’s inherent flaws, our tendency toward willful ignorance and confirmation bias. All the information to debunk all of Russia’s lies are easily accessible via this little thing we call the Internet, but millions (billions?) of marks who have bought in are not going to let go of their delusions and mistaken beliefs without tremendous struggle. Logic, reason, and facts have nothing to do with their collective mindset. The average German of Nazi times wasn’t broken of their brainwashing by persuasion, but only through epic, global bloodshed. Even if only secretly, many of those who lived continued to harbor Nazi sentiments long after the war ended and the Nazi state was dismantled. Very few people ever feel any contrition for anything they do or for anything they feel. Innocent victims in places like Mali, Syria, and Ukraine are dying from Russian aggression. Millions more will continue to die, and the millions around the world who justify their actions will continue to do so until they themselves become Putin’s prey. (France 24 4/22)

Assessing Germany and France’s role in the ‘historical failure’ of appeasing Vladimir Putin for two decades. Plus, two incidents that speak to how depraved American society is becoming

AP/Kremlin

Did Germany and France turn a ‘blind eye’ to the threat posed by Vladimir Putin? - In my estimation, all of us have been underestimating this tyrant for the past twenty-two years. Either out of naivety or cowardice, nobody in a position to do so has ever stood up to this bully, and that very much includes the United States and the administrations that preceded the current one. Nonetheless, Germany and France are being singled out by some as bearing a greater share of responsibility. Excerpt: ‘In hindsight, “it is hard to know whether a membership plan for Ukraine would have been enough to dissuade Putin”, said Laure Delcour, an expert in EU-Russia relations at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris. “NATO membership is a very long process and it is quite possible that Ukraine would still not be a member as we speak,” she told FRANCE 24. “One can also imagine that Putin would have moved faster to thwart Ukraine’s admission.” “Move fast” is precisely what Putin did just four months after the Bucharest summit, sending his tanks into Georgia in support of pro-Russian separatists in the breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He repeated the trick six years later in Ukraine’s Donbas region, going one step further with the annexation of Crimea. Each of Putin’s incursions met an ambivalent response from European leaders, alternating between heated rhetoric and sanctions, at first, and attempts at détente, soon after. With Ukraine now in the throes of a catastrophic war, those leaders stand accused of emboldening the Russian president and being blind to his imperialist ambitions. “Europe didn’t go wrong, Germany and France did,” said Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, vice-president of the German Marshall Fund and head of its Berlin office, in an interview with FRANCE 24. “France and Germany tend to speak for the rest of Europe. But these miss-assessments were made in Paris and Berlin, not elsewhere. Eastern Europe didn’t go wrong, northern Europe didn’t go wrong,” he added. Kleine-Brockhoff said the war in Ukraine called for an urgent reappraisal of German and French policy vis-à-vis Russia. He added: “Not only is the post-Cold War order crumbling in front of our eyes, so are the strategies deployed by Germany and France.”’ (France 24 4/05)

Ode to Ukraine: Emerging global power and guiding light among nations

(VIDEO) The daily nationwide moment of silence, followed by the glorious national anthem of Ukraine - A magnificent piece of music, accompanied by English subtitles and stunning war footage. Some may call it propaganda, some may call it nationalism, but I only see necessary patriotism in a war that was not of their choosing. They are rolling up their sleeves and fighting back, as their forefathers did against the Nazi invaders in World War II. At that time, however, they were a vassal state of the Soviet Union. Now it is their time in history to achieve glory as a strong, independent nation. America’s day has just about passed - we’re one presidential election away from the death knell - and Russia’s time is long up. Both will only grow more dangerous, but never again will they be prosperous or respected the more they descend into darkness. #Murica is ultimately going to end up like the Middle East, full of warring tribes, religious extremism, and great poverty and ignorance. It is already playing out, we’re becoming a breeding ground for terrorism just as the lands that produced al Qaeda, Hezbollah, ISIS, and the rest of that scum.

But Ukraine is going to win their war. In time they are going to emerge as a great global power; a vital partner in the world’s last bastion of humanity in Europe - the one continent that, apart from a few rogue or not entirely cooperative players, has demonstrated it has learned its lessons about the horrors of war and tyranny. Beginning with Germany, of course. And along with Germany, France, the EU, and the UK, Ukraine will be a vital bulwark against the emerging Axis of Evil of India and China. Who will be joined by the fallen empires of Russia and (post-2024) America - both nonetheless remaining rich in natural resources and therefore to be (further) exploited and controlled by evil overlords in Beijing and Delhi. Of course, China and India have to make peace with one another before this plays out, but my gut says that process is already underway, with Putin playing the key role in mediating between them. Mutual animosity and distrust toward the West, as well as territorial aims such as retaking former Soviet states and reclaiming Taiwan, are driving these superpowers together. Pakistan may factor into this one way or the other; India will always be their blood rival, but it’s hard to see them making common cause with Europe.

Plucking America from the Western alliance, after we had always been the center and strongest power of it, would be the new Axis’ coup de grace. American nationalist populists are gradually moving away from championing alliances with other Western nations and toward favoring closer relations with Russia. But that’s #Murica: Ukraine is now the crossroads between the free world and the despotic backwaters, and they are the first line of defense between ‘us’ and ‘them.’ LORD, protect and uplift them, and bring the tyrant, Putin, to his knees. #StopPutin #StandWithUkraine Слава Україні

The beginnings of World War III? Putin boldly declares that all of Ukraine belongs to Russia, recognizes the independence of the separatist provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk; Russian troops being sent in for ‘peacekeeping functions’

Kremlin Pool Photo via AP

The proverbial s**t is hitting the fan. Via the BBC

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has recognised breakaway rebel regions in Ukraine's east as independent states.

The self-declared people's republics of Donetsk and Luhansk are home to Russia-backed rebels who have been fighting Ukrainian forces since 2014.

Russia's move is likely to end peace talks in the region, which has been under a tenuous ceasefire for years.

Western powers also fear it could pave the way for Russian military forces to enter Ukraine's eastern regions.

Shortly after the announcement, Mr Putin signed an order for troops to perform so-called "peacekeeping functions" in both regions. The extent of the mission remains unclear, but if troops cross the border it would be the first time Russian soldiers have officially entered rebel-held territory.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the move amounted to "a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine" and breaks international law. He called it "a very ill omen and a very dark sign". Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the UK would announce new sanctions on Russia on Tuesday.

The EU pledged to "react with unity, firmness and with determination in solidarity with Ukraine".

Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison rejected the suggestion that Russian troops would have a peacekeeping brief, telling reporters: "It's unacceptable, it's unprovoked, it's unwarranted ... some suggestion that they are peacekeeping is nonsense."

The move by Vladimir Putin deepens the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, which is surrounded by more than 150,000 Russian troops on its borders. Russia has denied planning to invade, but the US believes Mr Putin is preparing an imminent attack. (Read more

Meanwhile, President Biden is making it clear the United States means business, imposing sanctions prohibiting trade and investment in the two breakaway provinces, and the United Nations Security Council will be holding an emergency meeting. Frankly, war probably cannot be prevented now, and this evil man, Vladimir Putin, cannot be constrained. Ukraine is doomed, and the other former Soviet republics are likely not far behind in being reabsorbed into the evil empire.

Not merely ‘hysteria.’ White House National Security Adviser warns that Russia is going to fabricate a pretext for invading Ukraine

AP/Mikhail Metzel

‘Hysteria’ the Russians say of the global alarm over the Ukraine crisis, knowing full well what they’re about to go in for the kill. The only things the Russians do well in this world are gaslighting, bullying, and murder. They are never to be trusted, and neither are any of their various mouthpieces and fans here in the United States. Take heed of the administration's warning. -

WASHINGTON/KYIV, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Russia could invade Ukraine at any time and might create a surprise pretext for an attack, the United States said on Sunday, as it reaffirmed a pledge to defend "every inch" of NATO territory.

Russia has more than 100,000 troops massed near Ukraine, which is not part of the Atlantic military alliance, and Washington - while keeping open the diplomatic channels that have so far failed to ease the crisis - has repeatedly said an invasion is imminent.

Moscow denies any such plans and has accused the West of "hysteria".

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on the eve of a trip that takes him to Kyiv on Monday and Moscow for talks with President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, called for Russia to de-escalate and warned of sanctions if Moscow did invade.

A German official said Berlin did not expect "concrete results" but diplomacy was important.

In Washington, President Joe Biden's National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said an invasion could begin "any day now".

"We cannot perfectly predict the day, but we have now been saying for some time that we are in the window," Sullivan told CNN.

U.S. officials said they could not confirm reports that U.S. intelligence indicated Russia planned to invade on Wednesday.

Sullivan said Washington would continue sharing what it learned with the world in order to deny Moscow the chance to stage a surprise "false flag" operation that could be a pretext for an attack.

It would also "defend every inch of NATO territory ... and Russia we think fully understands that message," Sullivan added in a separate CBS interview. (Read more)

The White House puts the screws to weakling Justin Trudeau, demands Canada crackdown on trucker blockades at the border

Cole Burston/Getty Images

Disrupting the lives of ordinary citizens is not a legitimate form of protest. Rather, it is terrorism, and these truckers ought to be treated as terrorists. But pretty boy Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has his thumb up his ass, sitting back and doing nothing. These petulant bullies are already causing great harm to the economies of both Canada and the United States, and they are beginning to inspire copycat protests in the U.S. and around the world. It has to be stopped. -

The Canadian government is coming under increasing pressure from the United States to resolve anti-vaccine mandate protests that are impacting the economy in both countries with border blockades, including a 5-day shutdown of the vital Ambassador Bridge.

The “Freedom Convoy” by Canadian truckers opposing a vaccinate-or-quarantine mandate for cross-border drivers, mirrored by the U.S. government, began with the occupation of the Canadian capital, Ottawa. The truckers then blocked the Ambassador Bridge earlier this week, and shut down two other smaller border crossings.

The closure of the bridge, North America’s busiest international land border crossing and a key supply route for Detroit’s carmakers, has halted some auto output and left officials scrambling to limit economic damage. (Read more)

President Biden warns Americans to leave Ukraine

AFP via Getty Images

If one is an American currently in Ukraine and somehow reading these words, ‘take heed.’ Everybody else, don’t point the finger of blame at the president when Russia invades and Americans remain stuck in Ukraine. He has given fair warning. -

US President Joe Biden has called on all American citizens remaining in Ukraine to leave the country immediately, citing increased threats of Russian military action.

Mr Biden said he would not send troops to rescue Americans if Moscow invades Ukraine.

He warned that "things could go crazy quickly" in the region.

Russia has repeatedly denied any plans to invade Ukraine despite massing more than 100,000 troops near the border.

But it has just begun massive military drills with neighbouring Belarus, and Ukraine has accused Russia of blocking its access to the sea

The Kremlin says it wants to enforce "red lines" to make sure that its former Soviet neighbour does not join Nato. (Read more)

One step closer to war: Putin points the finger of blame at the U.S. and allies over Ukraine crisis, portrays himself and Russia as victims

Mikhail Tereshchenko, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP

Hoping the national populist Vladimir Putin Fan Club in the United States are paying attention, and perhaps reconsidering their support. Not my holding my breath on that, though. -

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian president on Tuesday reiterated his demand for guarantees from the U.S. and its allies that NATO will not expand eastwards, blaming the West for “tensions that are building up in Europe.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s speech at a meeting with Russia’s top military brass came just days after Moscow submitted draft security documents demanding that NATO deny membership to Ukraine and other former Soviet countries and roll back the alliance’s military deployments in Central and Eastern Europe.

The demands — contained in a proposed Russia-U.S. security treaty and a security agreement between Moscow and NATO — were drafted amid soaring tensions over a Russian troop buildup near Ukraine that has stoked fears of a possible invasion. Russia has denied it has plans to attack its neighbor but pressed for legal guarantees that would rule out NATO expansion and weapons deployment there.

Putin charged Tuesday that if U.S. and NATO missile systems appear in Ukraine, it will take those missiles only minutes to reach Moscow.

“For us, it is the most serious challenge — a challenge to our security,” he said, adding that this is why the Kremlin needs “long-term, legally binding guarantees” from the West, as opposed to “verbal assurances, words and promises” that Moscow can’t trust.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington is working with its European allies to address what he called “Russian aggression” with diplomacy but said President Joe Biden opposes the kind of guarantees sought by Putin. (Read more)

Twitter algorithms found to promote nationalist populist content over other political posts

Getty Images

Sure, let’s just keep whining that ‘big tech’ is biased against ‘conservatives,’ by all means (and they will.) Washington Post -

An internal evaluation of Twitter’s recommendation algorithms concluded that they amplify right-leaning political content more than left-leaning content, company researchers announced Thursday, undercutting allegations by many conservatives who contend they are being censored on the platform.

Twitter researchers analyzed millions of 2020 tweets by elected officials in seven countries — Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, Britain and United States — as well as posts that linked to political content from news outlets. Researchers relied on outside experts to determine what was right- or left-leaning rather than deciding for themselves.

“Our results reveal a remarkably consistent trend: In 6 out of 7 countries studied, the mainstream political right enjoys higher algorithmic amplification than the mainstream political left,” the researchers said in a 27-page report. (Read more)

‘Israelis traveling to the U.S. experiencing “mass hysteria”’

Photo: Reuters

From the Jerusalem Post

People traveling to the United States have been in a state of “mass hysteria” since the government put the US under a severe travel warning, Ziontours Jerusalem CEO Mark Feldman told The Jerusalem Post Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Knesset Labor, Welfare and Health Committee placed the US, France, Italy, Germany, Greece and several other countries under a severe travel warning that will go into effect next Wednesday, August 11. Starting then, all travelers entering Israel from these countries will be required to isolate for a minimum of seven days – even if they are fully vaccinated or recovered.

In the hours following the announcement, “dozens of my clients called and canceled their flights to the States until the winter,” Feldman said. “The ones who are scheduled to come back at the end of August started panicking because they don’t want to be in quarantine over the Rosh Hashanah holiday, which starts on September 6. And many people got so scared about getting back before the quarantine next week [that] they paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars to land here by next Tuesday, the 10th, before it goes into effect.”

Any clients with reservations for vacations in Greece also canceled their trips immediately, Feldman said.

“Keep in mind that foreign tourists are still not allowed in here, so forget Sukkot visitors, forget about pilgrims for the Feast of Tabernacles,” Feldman added. “That’s all gone. But now, we’ve lost the Israelis that live abroad that would have come here for the holidays as well. I believe this insanity will continue through the High Holy Day season.”
