Storm over Ceuta

A symbolic seaside illustration showing a dark-haired woman kneeling alone upon a sandy beach, wrapped in a delicate translucent white shawl that billows around her in the sea breeze. She gazes thoughtfully towards the surf while holding a damp strand of hair, with black diving fins resting beside her and discarded rubber inner tubes scattered across the shoreline. Behind her, shafts of sunlight break dramatically through towering storm clouds, illuminating dozens of distant figures wading ashore through the shallow waves. The contrast between the solitary foreground figure and the mass of arrivals beyond evokes themes of migration, uncertainty, humanitarian crisis, and the fragile hope represented by light piercing the gathering storm.

Is the Trump regime covertly stoking Spain's sudden migrant crisis to seize control of the Strait of Gibraltar? {TΓΌrkiye Today 31 July}

https://www.turkiyetoday.com/opinion/the-gibraltar-calculus-is-spains-ceuta-included-in-the-abraham-accords-3225028?s=1

Raise hell over migrants coming into the former United States, but facilitate their entering another country and disrupting its economy and security. And for what purpose? Nothing is ever for a good purpose with Trump or those working alongside him. Violating the territorial integrity of a NATO state — under the heretofore unheard-of pretence that the area now being overrun with migrants does not belong to Spain but to Morocco, whose government is evidently complicit in the scheme — is especially nefarious when America is supposed to be Spain's ally and partner. America and Europe have been solid allies throughout the post-war era, but that era is over and the two sides are increasingly being cast as adversaries in a new cold war — or perhaps a hot one; time shall tell. Who else benefits from this new world of America and Europe at odds? Russia, China, possibly India, the Islamists, and anybody else with an interest in dividing and conquering the Western world.

Paradise before the flames

A sumptuous fantasy illustration of a dark-haired Middle Eastern woman standing barefoot in an opulent palace chamber, her arms wrapped tightly around herself in a gesture of fear and vulnerability. She wears ornate rose-coloured jewellery and matching briefs, while long crimson, violet, and sapphire silks stream dramatically around her. The richly decorated room is filled with embroidered cushions, gilded vessels, incense, and intricate Persian carpets beneath a mural depicting a phoenix confronting a dragon. Beyond an elaborate arched window lies a magnificent city of domes, minarets, and distant mountains, where a hooded falcon and a red-crowned crane stand tethered by delicate crimson cords. The contrast between the lavish surroundings and the woman's distressed expression evokes themes of captivity, uncertainty, and fragile resilience.

At what point do we officially consider this a wider Middle Eastern war? Conflagration: US and Saudi fighter jets target Iranian-backed militias in Iraq, while the Iranians attack a US base in Jordan. {NYT 29 July}

https://www.nytimes.com/live/2026/07/28/world/iran-us-strikes-iraq-trump?unlocked_article_code=1.1VA._45q.S7aIn9qmA8k9&smid=url-share

FTA: The scope of the war in the Middle East widened on Wednesday, as American and Saudi fighter jets attacked Iran-allied militias in Iraq, Iran fired missiles at bases in Jordan used by U.S. forces, and an American-owned tanker in an Egyptian port was set on fire in an apparent drone strike.

The spate of attacks ended a pause in direct fighting between the United States and Iran. Since the collapse of a cease-fire between the United States and Iran this month, Iran-linked groups across the region have opened new fronts and reopened old ones, embroiling forces in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan in the war that until recently had been contained to countries along the Persian Gulf.

Where the Silk Road begins again

A lavish fantasy illustration depicting two elegantly dressed women seated together upon richly embroidered cushions inside an opulent Persian-inspired pavilion. The woman on the left, with long wavy dark hair, wears an ivory-and-gold embroidered gown adorned with turquoise jewellery, while her companion, dressed in flowing jade-green robes embroidered with gold, leans close with one hand resting gently upon her shoulder. Both exchange affectionate, contemplative gazes. Through the ornate arched opening behind them stretches a tranquil landscape of winding river, gardens, pagodas, and distant palaces beneath a golden sky. A hooded falcon and a graceful red-crowned crane, linked by delicate crimson cords, stand nearby amid sumptuous carpets, carved stonework, and intricate blue-and-gold tilework, creating an atmosphere of refinement, diplomacy, and quiet intimacy.

Though denied by China’s Foreign Ministry, Iran is expected to be supplied with Chinese shoulder-launched missile systems. {Reuters 29 July}

https://www.yahoo.com/news/world/articles/exclusive-iran-chinese-shoulder-launched-030628359.html

FTA: July 29 (Reuters) - Iran is expected to receive within weeks a first shipment out of up to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defence missile launchers, three sources familiar with the deal told Reuters, as it rebuilds its defences amid war with the United States.

The purchase, valued at $60-70 million, ‌is one of Tehran's largest-known efforts to strengthen its short-range air defences since the outbreak of its war with the U.S. and Israel, which exposed gaps in ‌Iran's ability to protect military sites and strategic infrastructure.

The contract covers the purchase of between 300 and 400 man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS), including Chinese-made QW-12 and FN-16 missiles, the sources said.

The deal was signed with Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, a Hong Kong-based company that the sources said was acting as an intermediary between the Iranian side and the Chinese supplier.

IRAN NEEDS TO REARM AFTER MONTHS OF WAR

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. Iran's foreign ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

China's Foreign Ministry said: "The relevant reports are completely groundless. China has consistently played a role in promoting peace and ending the conflict."

Beijing-based Zhong Qing Bao Shang Group, the parent company of Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, did not immediately respond to an email request for comment ‌on Tuesday.

Iran needs to rearm after months of fighting in which the U.S. and Israel have struck facilities linked to its missile, drone and air-defence programmes, and Tehran responded with barrages of ballistic missiles and drones.

The conflict has highlighted the challenge of defending fixed military and strategic sites against advanced aircraft and precision-guided weapons.

Washington abruptly suspended two weeks of bombardment on Saturday, but President Donald Trump said strikes would resume if negotiations failed to end the five-month-old conflict, which has in theory been in a state of ceasefire since April.

The delivery of hundreds of MANPADS would significantly expand Iran's inventory of short-range air-defence weapons and underscore how military ties with China are deepening.

The bookkeeping of bloodshed

A dramatic allegorical digital illustration of a dark-haired woman standing barefoot upon a cracked ledger whose pages spill into long curling ribbons that wind around her wrists and ankles before drifting across the landscape. She wears a dramatically distressed olive-drab garment with silver dog tags, her windswept hair and solemn expression conveying resilience amid turmoil. Torn operational maps and administrative papers whirl through the air around her beneath the immense ringed planet Saturn dominating the night sky. The barren ground and distant horizon reinforce the atmosphere of desolation, while the symbolic military attire, fractured records, and swirling documents create an evocative meditation on bureaucracy, sacrifice, memory, and the weight of institutional decisions.

Veteran groups express outrage after the Trump regime makes controversial revision to Iran war casualty numbers. {The Guardian 27 July}

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/27/trump-administration-iran-war-casualties-veterans

FTA: The department’s reclassification of Iran war casualties has faced criticism in Washington, including from Thomas Massie, a Republican House member from Kentucky, ousted in a primary earlier this year after repeatedly breaking with the president.

“Let me explain this absurd ruse: The Pentagon is pretending there have been two Iran wars separated by a brief cease-fire,” Massie wrote on X on Friday. “The reality: By going more than 90 days without congressional authorization,” the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, “IS BREAKING THE LAW and must be held accountable”.

A nation cannot live on denial

A dramatic fantasy illustration depicts Lady Liberty standing barefoot upon a stone pedestal at sunset, portrayed as a graceful dark-haired woman wearing a flowing sea-green Greco-Roman gown of translucent fabric over a fitted bodice. She raises the Torch of Liberty high above her head while resting her free hand confidently upon her hip, her expression calm, resolute, and quietly defiant. Behind her, the immense ringed planet Saturn dominates the twilight sky, its glowing rings sweeping majestically across a field of stars and transforming the familiar emblem of liberty into a cosmic allegory. Far below, the distant skyline of New York City stretches along the horizon beneath warm golden light, while the billowing drapery of her gown catches an unseen breeze, lending the composition a sense of movement, dignity, and timeless grandeur.

Andrew Neil reports Trump’s physical and mental health is deteriorating rapidly, and he is poised to go off the rails over Iran. {Alternet 25 July}

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/general/sources-warn-they-don-t-know-what-to-do-as-trump-s-mind-withers/ar-AA28Deyd

Read: ground war and/or the use of tactical nuclear weapons. FTA:

Trump is said to be in “revenge mode” according to aides. And the President sounds ever more bellicose, saying on Thursday that he was close to deciding on a ‘massive attack’.

“Even senior aides in the White House don’t know what this would mean,” said Neil “The number of influential voices in Washington who think even ramped-up airstrikes – as I write, we’ve just had the 14th consecutive night of renewed US attacks on Iran – will cow Iran into submission are now passing few. In truth, nobody around Trump really knows what to do next – or what he will do.”

“… I listened to several influential figures close to Trump mull over the options. The assumption was that some sort of ground incursion was inevitable. That is certainly the new vibe coming out of Washington,” said Neil. “They talked of seizing Iranian territory on the northern shores of the Gulf to wrest control of the Strait of Hormuz from Tehran. They raised the prospect, again, of invading Kharg Island, from which Iran dispatches most of its oil exports.”

But there was, much more worryingly, talk of using tactical nuclear weapons to ‘send a message’ to Tehran and ‘concentrate its mind’ on peace, warned Neil.

“This took me aback. ‘Do that,’ I snapped ‘and you destroy America’s reputation and standing for the rest of the century. You’ve also paved the way for President Putin to do the same in Ukraine.’

“I was met with silence,” said Neil.

Liberty in the hands of her executioners

A richly detailed illustration in the style of a classic adventure comic depicts a pale, unconscious woman representing Lady Liberty reclining across an ornate Victorian chaise longue. She wears a flowing ivory gown and the iconic spiked crown, her extraordinarily long platinum-blonde hair cascading over the cushions. Small crimson puncture wounds on her neck, wrists and ankle suggest severe blood loss, leaving her complexion ghostly white. Five elegantly dressed women in lavish black and crimson gowns, each bearing subtle bloodstains at the throat, surround her with intent expressions, evoking aristocratic vampires. One gently lifts Lady Liberty’s chin while the others lean closer beneath candlelight in an opulent Gothic chamber filled with statues, heavy drapery and antique furnishings, creating an atmosphere of foreboding menace.

Making America great again by draining the coffers of the world’s most powerful military? The Pentagon is rapidly going broke. {WP 21 July}

Another fine example of what y’all voted for, #Muricans.

Just watch how quickly the federal government begins looking for savings elsewhere whilst ever more resources are devoted to sustaining the military machine. What shall be left? Social Security is already under ever greater strain, with insolvency projected for 2032; now that reckoning may arrive sooner still; Medicare and Medicaid are already effectively on the chopping block, so say ‘goodbye’ to healthcare for millions; infrastructure is already neglected, and will deteriorate further; and our military no longer capable of sustaining the commitments expected of it; and with it, any semblance of national security lost. Just look to Russia to see where Trumpistan is heading.

I wish I had the means to flee this country, for the gradual decline we have been living through hath been painful enough to witness. The pace of that decline is about to accelerate considerably. Americans voted for their own destruction, and they are about to get it.

Empires rarely collapse because they lack enemies — more often, they exhaust themselves — and history is not kind to governments and peoples that confuse spectacle with statecraft. Nor to leaders, such as Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin, who mistake recklessness for strength. I pray that those responsible for squandering the resources, institutions, and international standing that were painstakingly built over generations face their reckoning.

Muscles, mirrors, and make-believe

A richly detailed illustration in a classic adventure-comic style depicts an older silver-haired man standing before an ornate bathroom mirror, proudly flexing both arms while admiring his own muscular reflection. He wears a fitted grey sleeveless shirt and dark lounge trousers, his expression one of unmistakable self-satisfaction. Behind him, reflected in the open doorway, two young women in elegant satin nightwear pause, smiling warmly at one another while holding hands, seemingly amused rather than impressed by his display. The luxurious bathroom features polished black marble, gilded fittings, crystal perfume bottles, folded towels and a vase of white roses, all rendered with bold ink linework, warm hand-painted colours and meticulous vintage-inspired detail.

Closet homosexuality, perhaps? — Inside #MAGA’s creepy obsession with testosterone as a marker of national strength. {The Telegraph 18 July}

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/4c55efbff4de55b1

Truth be told, I may be one of those ‘low T’ men: I am pale, anaemic, underweight, a lifelong smoker and drinker, and I hate exercising anything other than my mind. The only reason to believe otherwise is that I have a very manly voice: I have been told at certain times that I should be in radio, and did consider attending broadcast school when I was considering my college options. Perhaps I should have pursued it, but even thirty years ago it was clear that radio was no longer a growth industry (the Telecommunications Act of that very year, 1996, ruined it). More pertinently, I also lacked greatly in confidence, as a childhood of constantly being made to feel inferior to peers will do that to a human being. I have never been athletic, cut out for military service, and cannot fight my way out of a wet paper bag. Nor hath any of this ever bothered me very much, apart from the lack of confidence in myself and much regret over lacking a backbone to stand up to more than a few motherf**kers who should have been put in their place.

Perhaps my nature hath bothered some other folks I have been unfortunate enough to know over the course of this thankless life, but they may kindly kiss my Anglo-Saxon ass. What the hell do I care about ‘measuring up’ physically to other men, when most other men are complete and total f**king bores and are nothing to emulate? I have never cared what other men look like, do not like most of them on any level, and it is so nonsensical and a bit peculiar to my, admittedly unorthodox, brain that anybody would. Beyond basic biology, I often wonder why women are attracted to us. On the whole, we are ugly creatures, inside and out.

Frankly, I have a hard time imagining how all these men can be so obsessed with their manhood, and the vitality of other men, and there not be some pent-up sexual frustration at play. How can so many men be endlessly preoccupied with other men's bodies and sex lives, yet insist this is simply normal masculine, heterosexual behaviour? I do not even know if I can explain in a paragraph or two, but it is just so bloody gross to me. Bodybuilding in particular… yuck. These fellows spend half their lives admiring themselves in mirrors and spending the other half evaluating other men's physiques, and we are supposed to think this is the epitome of manhood? People are too caught up in other people’s affairs to begin with, but having to engage in virtual dick-measuring contests all the time is not something I am interested in, particularly not at forty-eight.

Like most of these moral panics the extremes of American politics cook up, there is a basis of truth. Falling testosterone levels are a scientifically proven phenomenon, and may well contribute to why many men — to my ears, at least — my age and under have high, effeminate voices now. Have we noticed that not many men have distinctive voices anymore? I notice it most when watching baseball games: nearly all the younger play-by-play announcers have these flat, indistinct voices and there is not a new Jack Buck or Harry Kalas coming along. But I digress. Ultimately, it is simply a question of how grave a 'crisis' we believe this to be. My opinion is that there will always emerge ‘alpha’ males in society, for better and for worse. Basic human nature does not change, and boys are going to be boys, men are going to be men, and most — regardless of their ‘T’ levels — shall be forever insecure in their manhood.

And there will always be grifters such as Trump, Andrew Tate, Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson, Dana White, Pete Hegseth, and the rest of these ‘manosphere’ figures ready to take advantage of the weak, insecure, and pathetic.

This was not in the briefing

A highly detailed fantasy-glamour illustration depicting a blonde female Secret Service agent standing in an opulent executive office at night. She wears a tailored black blazer over a fitted white blouse, a short black skirt, sheer black tights, and black high-heeled shoes. Her posture conveys visible frustration: one hand rests on her hip while the other is raised in a dismissive gesture, her gaze fixed downward with an exasperated expression. Behind her, tall windows reveal a vast night sky dominated by the ringed planet Saturn. An American flag stands near dark wood panelling, leather furnishings, and a large presidential-style desk. Dramatic cinematic lighting and rich contrasts create an atmosphere of tension, authority, and weary determination.

Secret Service reportedly fed-up with VP Vance and family. {MS NOW 15 July}

Blatantly entitled, brazenly so, and only a heartbeat away from the presidency. Taking a young boy to a golf lesson aboard a military helicopter at taxpayer expense, reportedly costing more than $24,000. Meanwhile, JD Vance and his wife — ever the natalists — are expecting their fourth child soon.

Vance is not fit for the office he holds, and certainly not the presidency: too young, too self-assured, too many contradictions about him, and too aloof in nature. Alas, thanks largely to his boss, standards no longer apply to most Republican office-holders, provided they remain in Trump's good graces.

White Americans and much of the mainstream media — generally speaking, of course — do not hold Republicans to the same standards they apply to Democrats. I believe this has been true for decades, beginning with the political realignment that followed the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964, but more acutely so since 2016, when a third or so of the overall American population decided what a wonderful idea it would be to join a political cult led by a foul-mouthed real estate mogul and ‘reality television’ star with closets full of skeletons.

At the dawn of his political career, Donald Trump could have attempted to run as a Democrat. After all, he spent roughly a decade registered with the party in the 2000s. Yet he understood that his chances of success were far greater as a Republican. He needed the white working-class vote, and that constituency had been drifting away from the Democratic Party since the 1960s, a process completed with the election of Barack Obama as president in 2008.

Just look at the number of state legislative seats Democrats lost during Obama's presidency, particularly across the South. The scale of the decline is staggering. Trump was taking note. Trump could not have won as a Democrat, nor could he have gotten away with everything he has gotten away with as a Republican. No demographic group has proven more willing to overlook — or even embrace — his corruption, incompetence, and ethical failings than the coalition that now comprises #MAGA.

So long as JD Vance remains Trump’s trusted VP, he shall be Teflon. Ask Mike Pence what happens, however, when one falls out of good graces. The best thing that can happen between now and the scheduled presidential election of 2028 (and I use the word ‘scheduled’ as there is no guarantee there will be any election in 2028) is for Trump to throw Vance under the bus and fire him, for he would be a horrible president (yes, worse).

The wrath of the red moon

A richly detailed fantasy illustration portrays a powerful sorceress standing at the centre of an opulent Persian-inspired palace hall. She wears flowing crimson robes embroidered with gold, layered jewellery, and an ornate jeweled headdress, while strands of glowing red magical energy spiral from her outstretched hand. Her dark hair cascades around her shoulders and her intense gaze dominates the composition. Surrounding her are lavish carpets, silk cushions, gilded lanterns, carved marble columns, intricate tilework, and jewel-toned draperies rendered in extraordinary detail. In the background, two elegantly dressed women recline together upon cushions, providing a quiet contrast to the central figure’s commanding presence. Warm lantern light, rich crimson and gold hues, and elaborate decorative motifs create an atmosphere of luxury, mysticism, and regal authority.

Mistresses of the chokepoint

A richly detailed fantasy illustration portrays four elegantly attired women within an opulent Persian-inspired palace chamber illuminated by lanterns, candles, and golden ambient light. Intricate jewellery, embroidered silks, ornate carpets, and gilded furnishings create an atmosphere of extraordinary luxury. At the centre, a regal woman reclines upon cushions while attendants adjust her adornments, offer refreshments, and fan her with peacock feathers. Beyond a grand arched opening and an enormous gilded mirror, a narrow maritime waterway is crowded with tankers, warships, patrol craft, and helicopters. Fires burn along distant shorelines, while columns of smoke rise beneath a crescent moon, suggesting a region engulfed by conflict. Richly coloured silks in sapphire, emerald, crimson, gold, and violet cascade across carpets, cushions, and marble terraces illuminated by lanterns and candlelight. Intricate arches, gilded ornamentation, and elaborate mosaics frame the scene. Several women study a large map spread across a low table while others gaze anxiously towards the horizon. Beyond the pavilion, a modern skyline dominated by a towering skyscraper rises across a narrow strait crowded with warships, tankers, and patrol vessels. When is anyone ever going to get it? The Iranians are never going to abide by the terms of a peace deal. America hath two options, and neither is good: either withdraw completely from the region, thereby leaving Israel and the Gulf states vulnerable while further emboldening powers such as Russia and China; or commit to a full-scale war aimed at the all-out, genuine (meaning not half-assed) destruction of the Islamic Republic, risking World War III. The global economy hath already taken a major hit, and gas prices are not going down, are they? What a bloody mess — one that is going to take decades to recover from, assuming recovery is even possible.

Some sort of ‘peace deal’: US and Iranian forces continue striking one another, whilst ships are stuck in the Strait of Hormuz

A dramatic, painterly seascape of a gathering of women overlooking the Strait of Hormuz at sunset amid maritime crisis. Across the horizon, columns of black smoke rise from fires along distant coasts and at sea, silhouetted against a sky of crimson, orange, purple, and gold. If the impossible happened and any degree of lasting peace — say, three months or longer — actually were to occur with Iran, would anybody believe it at this point?

How many times in the past few months hath it been that Trump hath declared that ‘peace’ was achieved, only for the fighting to continue? He is the boy who cried wolf one time too many.

Which doth not appear to bother the large plurality of Americans who have supported him fervently for the past decade, with a passion and intensity unlike anything seen in modern American politics, but very much ought to. Just Google for thyselves the toll this conflict is taking on our military and its capabilities.

In no way, shape, or form is this conflict over, and we in the former United States have yet to experience proper retribution for our sins in elevating this jackass to a dictator (again, after we should have learned our lesson the first time around; bloody arseholes!).

Strait of Hormuz: where the world holds its breath

A dramatic digital illustration of a young woman swimming through the waters of the Strait of Hormuz at sunset. Seen from a low, water-level perspective, she stretcheth one arm forward while glancing back over her shoulder, her long dark hair trailing behind across the sea. Turquoise water is lit by warm golden light; waves catch reflections from the setting sun. In the background, several large oil tankers and cargo vessels transit the narrow waterway between rocky coastlines. Naval warships flank the shipping lane, including a vessel flying the Iranian flag—geopolitical tension and maritime uncertainty. The glowing sky holdeth dramatic clouds and orange sunlight, contrasting with darker blue water. No lasting ‘peace’ is forthcoming. None — not with the likes of Trump, Netanyahu, and the Islamist regime of Iran as the principal parties to the conflict.

And even after the former two are gone (which is not going to be for a long while, at least in Trump's case, and Bibi hath proven himself Teflon over and over), the latter shall very likely remain in perpetuity. Certain portions of the Iranian people have risen up their rulers, and have been thoroughly decimated in the process. Israel and Iran will be locked in conflict for generations, while the former United States will be left with no choice but to go home with its tail between its legs. For, we simply cannot afford this war, on any level. Dare I say, we cannot afford Donald J. Trump anymore, either. Self-inflicted wounds, and death by a thousand cuts: the #MAGA endgame

A dramatic dystopian illustration of a devastated landscape at sunset beneath a turbulent orange sky. Centre distance, an enormous mushroom cloud riseth in the shape of a clenched fist—destruction, anger, catastrophic consequence. Foreground, a tattered American flag lieth abandoned in the dust beside a weathered red cap bearing “MAGA.” The barren terrain is strewn with debris. Left, a lone oil pumpjack amid industrial wreckage; a convoy of military vehicles stretcheth across the wasteland. Right, a futuristic skyline of gleaming skyscrapers remaineth intact across water—technological progress against devastation. Apocalyptic symbolism, political imagery, and cinematic lighting evoke nationalism, fossil-fuel dependence, militarisation, extremism, decline, and the perceived consequences of ideological failure.

Friday, 19 June 2026 (Happy Juneteenth), and nobody seems to know what the hell is going on. Is Trump’s ‘deal’ with Iran — or capitulation to Iran — to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz on or off? Israel and Hezbollah have signed another truce, maybe, possibly?

This is one sick, tragic joke, and these Middle Easterners are going to be killing each other for the rest of time in spite of any efforts to stop it.

Here we have this US president and his entire cult following bellowing about putting ‘America First’, but this sure as hell is not it. Isolationists are going to get a major boost out of this, because what the hell is America doing in the Middle East at this point? Israel is going rogue, the Islamists shall never be tamed, and the Saudis and the oil barons will continue buying up everyone and everything.

At this moment, and speaking as one who is hardly an isolationist and believes we must engage with the world, I am thinking that it is bloody useless, and that the former United States ought to retreat from any and all efforts in the Middle East, begin moving away from fossil fuels in earnest, and get serious about fixing its own house.

None of that is happening at this moment, but ‘y’all’ keep pretending this hath always been about putting America ‘first’, when it hath always been about harming all the people and groups in society whom ‘y’all’ do not like. The #MAGA rank-and-file may not be happy about the intervention in Iran, but they shall continue to suffer any indignity so long as they continue to hate the immigrants, and gays/lesbians/trannies, anyone with a brain, so forth.

The republic in the recovery ward

A polished retro-style illustration of a military medical ward during a flu outbreak. Four nurses in crisp white uniforms move among rows of beds caring for recovering servicemen. Foreground, a blonde nurse gently presseth a cool cloth to a soldier’s forehead. Behind, a brunette nurse offereth water to another patient sitting upright. Farther down, two more nurses tend to bedridden men beneath blue-grey blankets. Large windows fill the room with warm daylight, illuminating metal beds, IV stands, and spotless furnishings. The soldiers appear tired but reassured. Compassion, professionalism, and human connection—nostalgic mid-century medical imagery, soft lighting, and calm resilience amid illness and recovery.

Expect to see many more headlines such as this in the years to come, as this gaggle of malevolent idiots and traitors continues decimating the Armed Forces (and everything else in its path). What you people voted for.

The lady of the crimson banner

A lavish political fantasy portrait set within an opulent gold-trimmed room with American patriotic motifs. Foreground, a young blonde woman in a bright red gown and matching red cap reclineth in a richly upholstered chair. Her hair is styled in curled pigtails with ribbons; she gazeth upward with admiration and idealised devotion, adjusting the cap’s brim. Dominating the background is an enormous heroic portrait of Donald Trump, lit by warm golden light. About the room: American flags, floral arrangements, mirrors, lamps. Through a great window, dark storm clouds gather over New York Harbor; the Statue of Liberty standeth distant—turbulent exterior against luxurious interior. Loose papers drift. Glamour, political symbolism, celebrity admiration, and romanticised patriotism unite in theatrical reverence.

Fever dream? Four nurses for the wounded daughter of Columbia

An ornate Renaissance-style allegorical painting of a humanised Statue of Liberty as a wounded woman with a spiked crown, lying injured on an antique medical gurney—her leg in a brace, her chest bandaged. Four nurses in vintage uniforms tend to her: one checketh her face, another taketh notes, a third adjusteth her leg. Stone archways frame a parched cracked landscape on one side and a coastal scene with ships on the other. Above, a surreal sky holdeth Saturn, swirling clouds, and a cascade of falling produce—cabbages, tomatoes, bread, coffee beans. Candles, lanterns, and antique mechanical equipment surround the bed.

Everyday items grow costlier in the former United States, largely due to its nation-destroying president's policies and actions. {WP 10 June; image generated via ChatGPT}

Mother Nature hath done some damage – notably, of late, in the form of drought – and I believe America is simply cursed and is going to remain so long after the orange usurper hath either been deposed, by whatever means, or simply dies. As decrepit as the motherf**ker is, he is not going anywhere for a long time to come. Mark my words. He is a curse, we are cursed; we shall never know life as it once was again.

Far more suffering and misery is yet to come. A drought here, a failed harvest there, rivers either overflowing or running lower than expected, reservoirs shrinking beneath an unforgiving sun. Perchance, another global health crisis. To say nothing of the ongoing political and social crack-up, all exposing the fragility lurking beneath the modern world's no longer so confident faΓ§ade. One can never rule out the possibility of some madman – Putin, Kim Jong Un, the Iranians, Trump – playing with nuclear weapons. Fun times, yeah?

The former United States – and I do not use that moniker to be cute, this is not the country I grew up in – is in the midst of a long historical season from which there is no easy escape. One that began with a literal bang on 11 September 2001, and America and her people have done almost nothing but make nearly every bad decision possible since then: the resentment, the distrust, the hunger for strongmen, the endless appetite for spectacle over substance. We are a nation in the midst of a gradual systemic breakdown.

By and large, the peasantry have themselves to blame for the hard times we are only beginning to endure in earnest, and I would be here for days enumerating the hows and whys. Fifty years from now, after we are long dead and buried and assuming the earth is still standing, the mass of humanity shall revert to living in caves because of the catastrophically awful, short-sighted, and malevolent direction the former United States of America hath taken over the decades, particularly in the past quarter-century. The America of my childhood and young adulthood, before 9/11, may have been a bit of a fraud in retrospect, and any nation will always have its warts even in the best of times; overall, though, it was undeniably a more decent and liveable place than this one. As one who hath lived through this transition from the world's strongest nation by a gazillion miles into one that is now bordering on third world status and is the black sheep of the global community, I am horrified thinking of all the ways we threw our collective prosperity, security, and dignity away. We will never know again what we once knew, and the younger generations coming up now and the generations yet to be born – again, if the earth is still standing – will simply never know, period.

Karma is a bitch, #Murica.

The sundering of Persia

A detailed fantasy-allegorical illustration in progressive-rock album style. Centre, a dark-haired woman in torn white, green, and red kneeleth amid devastation beside a burning waterfront city. Tears stream down her face; she reacheth upward desperately whilst clutching shredded fabric to her breast. Left, two women in ornate military uniforms pull glowing chains in opposing directions; right, two veiled figures in flowing black do the same. The central figure is caught in a symbolic tug-of-war. Above swirl green, crimson, and white cosmic storms, floating citadels, aircraft, and a ringed planet. Doves, broken statuary, smoke, fire, and shattered architecture speak of conflict, division, grief, and national turmoil.

Inflation has climbed to its highest level since 2022, and the same nation that screamed bloody murder over it under Joe Biden now looks the other way even as it bears the cost

A softly rendered allegorical illustration shows a platinum-blonde young woman with blue-tinted hair ends reclining upon a crumbling stone throne amid the ruins of empire. She wears a translucent white drape over a casual top, layered bracelets, rings, and lace-up gold sandals, and rests her cheek upon one hand with an expression of weary detachment. In the other hand she loosely holds a petrol pump nozzle, its hose trailing down beside a sign reading “$4.00+ below gallon”. Around her lie coins, scattered newspapers, and papers marked “Medicare”, while a badge labelled “Peacemaker” sits among the debris. Behind her rise broken columns, a large eagle crest, and draped banners; in the distance, aircraft cross a smoky sky above a burning city. The image turns consumer anxiety, imperial decay, and political theatre into a languid, satirical fantasy.

{Yahoo! Finance 10 April} “Consumer prices in March saw the largest monthly gain since 2022 as the US-Israel war against Iran sent gas prices skyrocketing past $4 a gallon”

A surge attributable almost entirely to Donald Trump’s humiliating and utterly futile adventure in Iran. Yet where, I pray, is the indignation from the American people that was so freely directed at President Joe Biden during his term of office? For Mr Biden, at the least, did endeavour to bridle inflation and uphold essential government services, whereas we now have Trump bellowing about cutting Medicare and Medicaid because the United States must pay for wars before anything else (at the same time declaring himself a peacemaker and demanding a Nobel Prize for it). And all the while, Trump is blatantly and shamelessly lying about the cost of gas, food, etc., and the media and general public shrug their shoulders (‘Trump being Trump’). James Carville’s oft-quoted maxim — ‘It’s the economy, stupid’ — no longer applies in post-Obama #Murica: its poor, white, rural denizens hath decided, time and again, that their resentments and grievances outweigh every other consideration, including their own financial survival. Thus they, and the rest of us in this polyglot empire who never wanted this madness and did what we could to prevent it, are being shunned and left behind by the wider world. For that, there shall be no redemption. Y'all done f**ked' up.

Bombing Iran is not going to erode Donald Trump’s support in a society that revolves around grievance. After all that hath been said and done, to believe that anything will do so is fool’s gold

A dramatic, realist illustration shows an Iranian woman standing amid the wreckage of a devastated neighbourhood. She has long dark hair and wears a dusty headscarf and a dirt-streaked grey tunic over loose trousers, her bare feet on broken stone and splintered timber. Bruises and dried blood mark her cheek, and she looks upward with a stunned, searching expression. Behind her, ruined buildings collapse into heaps of rubble; smoke boils into a grey sky and an orange flare burns in the distance. A small flag is faintly visible through the haze. In the foreground, a discarded stuffed rabbit lies on the debris beside a red toy, underscoring the civilian cost of the destruction.

Following the attack on Iran, I am yet again watching my fellow Trump detractors, on social media and elsewhere, put far too much faith in the American people as a whole. For years now, something big happens that would ruin any other politician, and they swear this is finally the end for Trump. No — even when he was defeated and sent into exile for four years, he still dominated the headlines and dictated public discourse. They keep underestimating the strength of the hold this one charismatic man hath upon the collective psyche of the country. If the general public is not in revolt now, when it is reasonably obvious that the president committed unspeakable crimes against minors on Epstein’s island — never mind having blatantly orchestrated a coup attempt, grossly mismanaged the worst public-health crisis in a century, attempted to kneecap the world’s largest economy with brain-dead policies, and appointed an anti-vaxxer lunatic to oversee public health — then they are not going to revolt over a conflict on the other side of the world. Not this country. Not these people.

Americans, historically, fall into lockstep the moment a fresh war or conflict breaks out. The Iraq War was massively popular before it was massively unpopular. Isolationism was a default posture for a vast swathe of the public right up to the morning of 7 December 1941 — then, in an instant, it became non-existent. This reflex is not new: the American people, in the aggregate, are sheep. They do what they are told, and they always have.

Roughly sixty to seventy-five per cent of Americans either fervently support Trump; or support him begrudgingly because he is not a Democrat; or possess some personal and/or financial interest in doing so; or—most commonly—do not care and simply look the other way (i.e. they are apolitical). Only about a quarter, at most a third, actively and vocally disapprove of Donald Trump.

So no: if his extreme megalomania and narcissism (I hate to use that grossly overused word, but it fits in his case), his paedophilia, treason, racism, economic malfeasance, felony convictions, and the wider menagerie of criminality and cruelty barely raise an eyebrow with the vast majority of Americans, then bombing Iran is not going to do it either.

And of the roughly thirty per cent or so who eagerly support this regime, they do so for one reason: they are granted licence to hate other Americans. Period. They will bear economic hardship for it—and they already have. They may not like the country being dragged into another foreign conflict, but it is not a dealbreaker. Nothing is a dealbreaker so long as that permission to hate remains intact.

People are really this awful. That is the hardest lesson we have been forced to learn over the past ten years. And we are not getting out of this hellhole any time soon. —Arthur Newhook, 1 March 2026.
