Muscles, mirrors, and make-believe

A richly detailed illustration in a classic adventure-comic style depicts an older silver-haired man standing before an ornate bathroom mirror, proudly flexing both arms while admiring his own muscular reflection. He wears a fitted grey sleeveless shirt and dark lounge trousers, his expression one of unmistakable self-satisfaction. Behind him, reflected in the open doorway, two young women in elegant satin nightwear pause, smiling warmly at one another while holding hands, seemingly amused rather than impressed by his display. The luxurious bathroom features polished black marble, gilded fittings, crystal perfume bottles, folded towels and a vase of white roses, all rendered with bold ink linework, warm hand-painted colours and meticulous vintage-inspired detail.

Closet homosexuality, perhaps? — Inside #MAGA’s creepy obsession with testosterone as a marker of national strength. {The Telegraph 18 July}

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/4c55efbff4de55b1

Truth be told, I may be one of those ‘low T’ men: I am pale, anaemic, underweight, a lifelong smoker and drinker, and I hate exercising anything other than my mind. The only reason to believe otherwise is that I have a very manly voice: I have been told at certain times that I should be in radio, and did consider attending broadcast school when I was considering my college options. Perhaps I should have pursued it, but even thirty years ago it was clear that radio was no longer a growth industry (the Telecommunications Act of that very year, 1996, ruined it). More pertinently, I also lacked greatly in confidence, as a childhood of constantly being made to feel inferior to peers will do that to a human being. I have never been athletic, cut out for military service, and cannot fight my way out of a wet paper bag. Nor hath any of this ever bothered me very much, apart from the lack of confidence in myself and much regret over lacking a backbone to stand up to more than a few motherf**kers who should have been put in their place.

Perhaps my nature hath bothered some other folks I have been unfortunate enough to know over the course of this thankless life, but they may kindly kiss my Anglo-Saxon ass. What the hell do I care about ‘measuring up’ physically to other men, when most other men are complete and total f**king bores and are nothing to emulate? I have never cared what other men look like, do not like most of them on any level, and it is so nonsensical and a bit peculiar to my, admittedly unorthodox, brain that anybody would. Beyond basic biology, I often wonder why women are attracted to us. On the whole, we are ugly creatures, inside and out.

Frankly, I have a hard time imagining how all these men can be so obsessed with their manhood, and the vitality of other men, and there not be some pent-up sexual frustration at play. How can so many men be endlessly preoccupied with other men's bodies and sex lives, yet insist this is simply normal masculine, heterosexual behaviour? I do not even know if I can explain in a paragraph or two, but it is just so bloody gross to me. Bodybuilding in particular… yuck. These fellows spend half their lives admiring themselves in mirrors and spending the other half evaluating other men's physiques, and we are supposed to think this is the epitome of manhood? People are too caught up in other people’s affairs to begin with, but having to engage in virtual dick-measuring contests all the time is not something I am interested in, particularly not at forty-eight.

Like most of these moral panics the extremes of American politics cook up, there is a basis of truth. Falling testosterone levels are a scientifically proven phenomenon, and may well contribute to why many men — to my ears, at least — my age and under have high, effeminate voices now. Have we noticed that not many men have distinctive voices anymore? I notice it most when watching baseball games: nearly all the younger play-by-play announcers have these flat, indistinct voices and there is not a new Jack Buck or Harry Kalas coming along. But I digress. Ultimately, it is simply a question of how grave a 'crisis' we believe this to be. My opinion is that there will always emerge ‘alpha’ males in society, for better and for worse. Basic human nature does not change, and boys are going to be boys, men are going to be men, and most — regardless of their ‘T’ levels — shall be forever insecure in their manhood.

And there will always be grifters such as Trump, Andrew Tate, Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson, Dana White, Pete Hegseth, and the rest of these ‘manosphere’ figures ready to take advantage of the weak, insecure, and pathetic.

Hath the United States of America deliberately forgotten COVID?

CDC

Is there a notable 'forgetting' taking place amongst the public concerning the pandemic? I find myself here in contemplation, casting my thoughts back to our state three years past: Most every enterprise shuttered, masks adorning the faces of all in public, and a large portion of the nation turned the act of complaining and whining into a cottage industry. The NBA and Stanley Cup playoffs contested in the month of August within empty arenas, the artificial hum of crowd noise accompanying baseball and football games played before sparse or nonexistent spectators. The utter lack of leadership from the incumbent president, a leader bereft of any discernible plan, viewing the pandemic merely as a diversion from his populist and slanderous escapades. Concurrently, the extensive protests for racial justice unfurled against the backdrop of the COVID scourge and the aftermath of George Floyd's untimely demise. It was an exceedingly distressing period, one that I ardently believe should not slip into oblivion. Indeed, the transient surge in emphasis on the act of hand washing remains a practice applicable at any time and in any circumstance, yet I hear scarce mention of it nowadays. In fact, due to widespread defiance regarding mitigation measures, we now find ourselves a less hygienic and more squalid nation. Nurses and physicians face disdain, basic cleanliness is met with scorn, and in the advent of the next pandemic or epidemic, it is probable that a sufficient portion of the general populace will disregard public health mandates. Irrespective of the trauma endured, a nation that willfully forgets and obstinately marches forward, pretending naught occurred, is destined to replicate its errors. Thus, it is doomed to failure.

Aghast British broadcaster: ‘The Republican Party have embraced the AR-15 as their mascot.’ The Christofascist takeover of America is underway, and with it divorce from the Western world

Karen Bleier/AFP/Getty Images/USA Today

{VIDEO} British broadcaster Anthony Davis responds to the Highland Park shooting - ‘The Republican Party have embraced the AR-15 as their mascot.’ Americans should see how the free, civilized world sees this country right now. Once, America led the free world, but now many are in denial that this is no longer the case. Not that most Americans care how the world sees them - in fact, Americans tend to only become more jingoistic the more they are called out on their pathetic jingoism. One of the results of this extreme rhetoric and brainwashing is that America is growing apart from Europe and the Western world; when the American people return the radicalized GOP to congressional majorities this November and then restore Trump (or install a DeSantis or similar type) as dictator in two years, our alliance with the free world comes to an official end. In fact, I fully expect that American Christofacsists, in time, are going to begin calling for a modern-day Crusades to ‘liberate’ Europe from Satanism, or Communism, or whatever garbage is used as an excuse. America is crumbling quickly and Fascism is rising at an alarming pace. Either President Joe Biden takes drastic action to attempt to save this republic, or it is gone; forget about trusting most of our fellow Americans to do the right thing, they are a lost cause.

Even if this republic is somehow held together and Fascism is defeated, we’ll never again have the prosperity we once knew domestically, or anywhere near the level of respect and deference on the global stage. The hallmarks of the post-war global order will not be reclaimed; the new Fascist state is emerging, but as with Nazi Germany and Mussolini’s Italy, it will collapse before too long; eventually, the union is likely to be dissolved and broken up into many smaller states. Large numbers of us are going to be dead before it completely collapses. Putting it bluntly, Europe, Asia, etc., are ‘over’ our bulls**t and are moving on. Like an jilted love that refuses to let go, Fascist America - or #Murica - will grow more aggressive and hostile the more isolated it becomes. Just as with Russia, or taken to the extreme, North Korea. Hermit kingdoms that offer nothing but misery and death. Putin’s Russia may be one of #Murica’s only allies once the Fascist takeover is complete. I pray that at least some sane Americans will be able to escape this nightmare, and find new, more welcoming homes elsewhere. To that end, I pray the Fascist alliance does not destroy the entire planet, and that there will be an ‘elsewhere’ to go. Just know that once Fascist Americans finish annihilating their domestic enemies they are not going to want to stop there. Bloodlust is addictive, and therein will lay #Murica’s eventually downfall; the free world and its governments must prepare now. (MeidasTouch 7/07)

Katherine Stewart: Christian nationalists are excited about what comes next - ‘(M)ovement leaders are already preparing for a new and more brutal phase of their assault on individual rights and democratic self-governance. Breaking American democracy isn’t an unintended side effect of Christian nationalism. It is the point of the project.’ (New York Times 7/05)

Fact-checking #Cult45, as futile as that may be these days: No, the Supreme Court did not secretly overturn the 2020 presidential election, and does not have constitutional authority to do so. (Reuters 7/12)

The law of unintended consequences: Following the Supreme Court ruling in favor of the coach who led his team in prayer at the 50-yard line, Satanists petition to lead prayer at a Florida high school football game. (Patch 7/08)

Oakland: Four baseball fans injured by bullet fragments from outside the stadium while on field for post-game fireworks display - Attendance is already wretched for A’s at Oakland Coliseum, this won’t help. In all seriousness, one of the effects of all these mass shootings {along with other factors, such as COVID} is that people are increasingly less willing to attend any sort of public gathering. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to step aside, will stay in office until the Tories pick a new leader - Imagine that, a country that still demands character and will hold its leaders accountable. And, for all his flaws, Boris Johnson could not possibly have done 1/1000th of the evil Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and other tyrants around the world have. A great orator who stood by Ukraine and against Putin; he was also either the very first or one of the first to publicly congratulate Joe Biden and acknowledge the man as the rightful winner of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, much to the chagrin of the American right. The major concern now for Great Britain and the entire world is which direction the Conservative Party heads in, and who they choose as leader. If they go the route of the GOP and other right-wing parties that are embracing the revival of Fascism, then the United Kingdom is in a lot of trouble. Boris Johnson may have some serious flaws, but what comes next, in his absence, may be catastrophic; I would not be celebrating his impending exit. (NPR 7/07)

Macron wins French presidential election in an apparent landslide

Christophe Ena/AP

Emmanuel Macron easily reelected in France, turning back far-right populist Marine Le Pen - Approximately 58%. That is a decisive win, far larger than anyone seemed to expect. If forced to choose between these two, #Murica would probably have elected the Fascist bitch. Vive le France, at least somewhere in the world sanity still prevails. (AP 4/24)

Former Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch dies at 88 - The man was a fairly visible figure during his many years on Capitol Hill. The longest-serving Republican ever in the upper chamber. He had quirks, but was not a total nutjob like the sorry bunch up there now. Remember, it was Orrin Hatch’s retirement that led to Mitt Romney winning the seat. Thus becoming a major thorn in Trump’s side. (AP 4/24)

On account of the lockout and a twenty-year agreement expiring, Major League Baseball temporarily halts steroid testing

Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire/Getty Images

Really nothing to see here, just another reminder that it is time for the owners and players to make agreement, and then get back to work. Not terribly optimistic, though, that we are going to have a full, 162-game season. Associated Press -

NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball has stopped testing players for steroids for the first time in nearly 20 years due to the expiration of the sport's drug agreement, two people familiar with the sport's Joint Drug Program told The Associated Press.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because no public announcement was made.

The halt in testing is a casualty of the sport's lockout that started Dec. 2 and a provision in the joint drug agreement between MLB and the players' association that states "the termination date and time of the program shall be 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 1, 2021."

"It should be a major concern to all those who value fair play," Travis Tygart, chief executive officer of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, said Monday.

MLB and the union declined comment on the halt.

Just last month, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were denied election to the Hall of Fame by baseball writers over suspicions of PEDs use. Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez, who both served drug suspensions, fell well short in voting. (Read more)

The Atlanta Braves win the World Series

The World Series has come to a conclusion, and the Atlanta Braves are world champions. Congratulations to the Braves and all their fans, as well as to the Astros and their fans. Two great teams, two great fanbases. As happens every year, I am now melancholy because the baseball season is over.

Week in review, 04/24 - 04/30

Seems to me the majority of people are no longer interested in reading news articles (or reading, period), and most especially if their narrow worldviews are in any manner challenged. Echo chambers that demand no critical thinking are so much easier and provide far more entertainment for the masses. As the old saying goes, of course, 'the masses are asses.' Always been true, and truer still today in this unprecedented technological age. All the information in the world at our fingertips, yet blissful ignorance is always going to prevail …

In defense of Dr. Anthony Fauci. Efforts by the far-right to portray Dr. Fauci as ‘some bespectacled Beelzebub’ fall flat and are ultimately self-defeating

Not yet close to America’s death toll, but at the rate they’re going it may not be long: India passes 200,000 Covid-19 deaths as new cases spike to a world-record 360,960 in one day, ‘widespread shortages of medical oxygen and beds’

‘Russia has launched a major campaign using ministries, companies and pro-Kremlin media to promote the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine and spread fake news that the West and the European Union are trying to undermine the shot, an EU agency said in a report Wednesday’

‘The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines were found to be 94% effective at preventing hospitalizations among people ages 65 and over in a real-world study published Wednesday by the CDC’

Beware of Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, another huckster having great success peddling fear and disinformation about COVID vaccines to evangelicals and others predisposed to be anti-vaccine

‘A man and his three sons are facing criminal charges after they sold more than $1 million worth of toxic industrial bleach that was fraudulently marketed as a cure for COVID-19 and other serious medical conditions, federal prosecutors said’

‘The Border Patrol says it has insufficient time and space to conduct coronavirus testing at crowded processing stations.’ This obviously needs to be rectified. At the very least, it should be ensured those coming to this country are not spreading disease

The United States formally recognizes the mass slaughter of Armenians by Ottman Turks as a genocide: Over a century in the making, and what leverage do Erodgan and Turkey really have to do anything but pout over it?

President Biden unveils American Families Plan, including provision for universal preschool: It is said the first three years of a child’s life are the most important in determining their life course, and I firmly believe learning should begin young. As soon as possible. Ideally, it would not be the federal government providing these services, and I’m certain the president understands this. The government should not have to cajole parents and communities into properly educating their children, but here we are. We cannot continue to allow our kids to fall behind so many other nations, especially those most hostile to us

‘No one will have to endure inane punditry that Biden has finally “grown into the presidency.” He is comfortable in his new job — and determined to do big things.’ Jennifer Rubin: Biden’s address to Congress proves we have an adult back in the presidency

Approval ratings must be always taken with a grain of salt, as data can always be twisted to suit an agenda and the opinions of most Americans are worthless to begin with. For whatever those ratings are worth, though, President Biden’s approval is considerably higher than his predecessor’s were at this time in 2017. What is most important is that this president is leading by example, conducting himself with dignity, and America is finally making a little bit of progress in the fight against COVID-19

Fact check: No, President Biden is not going to prevent us from eating red meat

Fresh off election falsehoods, Republicans serve up a whopper about President Biden

‘At some point, the blame for modern Republicanism must pass from the party to an electorate that could cure it at once by levying harsher political costs.’ Janan Ganesh: Blame the U.S. electorate for the Republican Party’s success

‘The G.O.P. response to the Biden agenda has been anemic because the base doesn’t care about mere legislation, just their own cultural standing.’ David Brooks: The GOP is getting even worse, and Trumpians are having a venomous panic attack

Any wonder these people went to the desperate lengths they did to prevent a lawfully elected president from taking office? Feds execute early morning raid of Rudy Giuliani’s apartment and office in investigation of his dealings in Ukraine

Arizona Republicans choose a known conspiracy theorist to lead another futile audit of last fall’s election: Can gaslighting be any more shameless than this? Why are we still litigating an election that is over, and why are so many committed to this Big Lie when there has not been even one shred of credible evidence there was any election tampering? These f**kers lost and really should move on with their lives, but endless grievance is what the base demands and where the money is

Tucker Carlson’s anti-mask rant: A ‘useful data point for how American conservatism has transformed, especially in the Trump era, from a movement that (at least putatively) believes in limited government to one that primarily prizes marshaling the power of the state to punish those who disagree with it’

‘In a world where nothing is true, everything is permitted.’ Max Boot: The American right is becoming completely untethered from reality

‘White conservatives always assume they’re on the side of popular opinion.’ Absolutely true, and why so many of them accepted the Big Lie, even without real evidence. A well-reasoned response to an editorial writer who complained of ‘wokeness’ ruining his experience at Disney World

‘(T)his paragon of limited government is threatening to hurt companies who express opinions he disagrees with.’ Ted Cruz says the quiet part out loud

FDA moves to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars: A terrible decision that is going to adversely affect - or at least seriously piss off - many black Americans. This country has far more pressing issues than to engage in this anti-smoking hysteria any longer. So it’s unhealthy, who cares!? I do not care. All of you out there have made life in this country and world so god-damn stressful with all your noise and bulls**t, and I’m supposed to feel sorry for smoking a cigarette? F**k off

MLB removes the All-Star Game from Atlanta

Just the perception of racism is a non-starter in today’s corporate world, and as a result this new election law in Georgia is doomed to repeal.

Who are any of these Republicans in their legislature fooling, anyway? Who is anyone who believes this crap about a stolen election (the ‘Big Lie’) fooling? A post-election audit was done in Georgia and found no evidence of voter fraud. Yet, electoral integrity - such as they define it - suddenly became of vital importance once they got embarrassed at the ballot box in 2020. The GOP has become a party of affirmative action and grievance for deeply frightened white people, exploiting every single loophole and quirk they can find in state and federal law to retain their rapidly dwindling hold on society. It’s what their base demanded and what the spineless cretins are delivering. If white supremacy is the only thing that is going to temporarily stave off the inevitable demise of their beloved party then we will continue to see Republican lawmakers desperately cling to the 1950s even as the bulk of society moved on long ago. Thus, the GOP and its base of supporters will remain deeply at odds with the rest of us. Money talks, though, and it is the only leverage that can be held over those who are hell bent on making America ‘great again.’ Appeals to reason, common sense, and humanity? No, that never works with hardened bigots (or with most anyone, for that matter.) It didn’t work in the ‘50s and ‘60s - the South had to be dragged kicking and screaming into putting an end to segregation and granting blacks suffrage. Hitting one in the pocketbook is the only way anyone capitulates. Georgia needs Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, and Major League Baseball a lot more than those entities need Georgia. The Braves are a great franchise with a rich history - the uniform the late Hank Aaron wore when he broke Babe Ruth’s home run record. We just lost Mr. Aaron on January 22, and what an insult to his legacy that Major League Baseball has been left with no recourse but to take this action.

Week in review, 02/03 - 02/09

I will keep up on all the impeachment trial stuff - or at least whatever I find relevant - on my own time. No interest in watching any of this live. Convict the bastard, and then let's never speak of him again except whenever necessary as a lesson in why populism is a grave danger to the republic.

An eye-opening figure: ‘At January's pace of 49,000 jobs per month, it would take roughly 17 years for the US jobs market to get back to where it was a year ago.’ U.S. job growth sluggish as COVID hampers recovery

Scientists assembled by the WHO in Wuhan say COVID-19 likely originated in animals, but further research is still necessary

Texas Rep. Ron Wright dies following two-week battle with COVID 19

Canada to require all crossing land borders to have proof of a negative COVID-19 test; fines of up to $3,000 for non-compliance

President Biden: Previous administration’s mishandling of COVID-19 ‘even more dire than we had thought;’ 75% vaccination rate or higher estimated to be necessary to achieve ‘herd immunity’ by the end of 2021

I’d estimate 30 percent is probably about the number who will outright refuse vaccination. COVID is going to be with us for a while yet. Dr. Fauci: 70 to 85 percent of Americans will need to be vaccinated for ‘a return to normal,’ but we’re at less than two percent right now (as of Feb. 3)

‘Leading vaccine scientists are calling for a rethink of the goals of vaccination programmes, saying that herd immunity through vaccination is unlikely to be possible because of the emergence of variants like that in South Africa’

South Africa suspends roll out of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine after initial trials show it offered only ‘minimal protection’ against mild and moderate cases of the virus

Large COVID-19 outbreak at UMass-Amherst forces the school to issue two-week self-sequestration order to 5,000 students living on campus and another 8,000 living in the immediate area off-campus

Good idea: ‘Gov. Charlie Baker on Friday announced that Massachusetts is launching a call center for senior residents over the age of 75 who want to make COVID-19 vaccine appointments over the phone instead of on the state’s website’

Give this lady a good citizenship award: Mass. woman creates website to help people book COVID-19 vaccinations

Seems like a fair incentive to me: Kroger offers $100 bonus to employees - ‘nearly 500,000 individuals in 35 states,’ a considerable number - who get vaccinated

‘Politics is not about the weird worship of one dude.’ Thank you, Senator Sasse. Cults of personality are the stuff of tin-pot dictatorships, and those who participate in one - including, but by no means limited to, Trumpers - are no better than sheep. Baah!

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene lashes out at her colleagues - ‘morons’ - who successfully voted to remove the far-right conspiracy theorist from committee assignments. (No, the morons are clearly the majority of your constituents and all of your supporters in GA-14)

Frank Bruni: Marjorie Taylor Greene and the Republican perversion of ‘freedom.’ She’s playing the victim, don’t fall for it

Fools! Putting loyalty to a man ahead of country, and punishing the strongest voice their state party has and is likely to have anytime soon: Wyoming Republican Party censures Rep. Liz Cheney for Trump impeachment vote

Rep. Liz Cheney not backing down an inch, says the GOP should not be the ‘party of QAnon, or antisemitism, or Holocaust deniers, or white supremacy, or conspiracy theories’

Research shows the Republican Party is losing registered voters in droves following the U.S. Capitol riot and the end of the Trump presidency

Phony election fraud challenges have cost U.S. taxpayers $519 million, and counting

Canada officially labels the Proud Boys as a terrorist group

Very sad to learn of Pedro Gomez’s passing. I’ll miss his excellent reporting on the game of baseball

MLB owners and the players union agree on health and safety guidelines for the 2021 season: Excellent they got this out of the way now, and not days before the start of the season as could fairly be considered typical for these two sides

Yadier Molina returns to the Cardinals on a one-year deal, his 18th season with the franchise - the most games with a single franchise for any catcher in history

Free agent 2B Kolten Wong signs deal with the Milwaukee Brewers: A very good player, especially defensively, who had his share of highlights in a Cardinal uniform. But not at all irreplaceable

A little perplexed. Dexter Fowler may be on the downside of his career, but is still capable and productive. I would think he would be worth more to the Cardinals than ‘cash or a player to be named later.’ Oh well, best of luck to him in Anaheim

Reigning Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer signs with the reigning world champions, the Dodgers. Three years, $102 million, per MLB Network. A massive deal, to say the least, and possibly makes LA the overwhelming favorite to repeat

Returning to the Braves. The best move for him, and good luck to the erstwhile Cardinal: Outfielder Marcell Ozuna returns to Atlanta on a four-year, $64 million deal

At least we can hope it won’t get any worse, but it was a rotten year by any standard: 2020 was the worst year for economic growth since World War II

The ‘uncanny resemblance’ between today’s GOP and the Know-Nothings of the mid-19th century

The GOP is in a really bad spot: Alienate Trump, and alienate most of the supporters the party has remaining. Continue to embrace Trump, and they (further) alienate everyone else: Trump’s new PAC raises over $30 million

Republicans at the state level ‘have made loyalty to the defeated ex-president the sole organizing principle of the party.’ Nationalist populism and conspiracism have a commanding grip on hearts and minds that’s not going to be broken without a fight
