Two dead in Israeli embassy massacre. As the gunman screamed 'Free Palestine' during his arrest, America's moral bankruptcy has been laid bare

AFP/Getty
VIDEO VIA BBC NEWSthe moment the Washington DC Jewish Museum shooting suspect is detained

Every remaining reasonably minded individual in the former United States who continues to value Israel and the Jewish people as friends—Democrat, Republican, or otherwise, all dwindling in number—must, at this very instant, forcefully reaffirm their unwavering solidarity. Antisemitism is running rampant across the political spectrum, and it is rapidly becoming perilous for Jews to merely exist in this dying nation. The West as a whole is being consumed by the same ancient hatred that birthed the Holocaust. Europe has been gradually succumbing to its Islamised hordes for the past two decades, yet until very recently America offered a safe haven, its populace overwhelmingly in support of Israel’s right to exist. A dramatic shift has undeniably occurred: a dark energy has taken root in hearts and minds.

Increasingly, America’s useful idiots applaud as antisemitic mobs, or lone gunmen as was apparently the case in this incident, render the streets unsafe for Jews. It is 1938 replaying before our eyes. God will ensure that the former United States and its people are punished as severely as ordinary Germans were in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War; not solely for betraying the Jewish people, but for abandoning every value and tenet they ever purported to hold dear. Judgement invariably befalls nations that forsake the guardians of civilisation. —Arthur Newhook, 22 May 2025.

Law enforcement in the U.S. seized over 115 million fentanyl pills in 2023, up from 71 million in 2022, and only 50,000 in 2017

Darwin Brandis/iStock

Fentanyl, with potency exceeding fiftyfold that of heroin, is primarily manufactured in laboratories in India and China before clandestine entry into the U.S., typically via Mexico. According to this DW article, opioid addiction is far less rife in European nations endowed with robust and functioning healthcare systems, evidenced by a mere forty-nine (49) recorded fentanyl overdose deaths in the European Union in all of 2021. In stark contrast, the U.S. witnessed more than 200 deaths per day in 2022, and that may be a conservative estimate.

Nearly every solution enacted at federal, state, and local levels to combat the opioid crisis has been punitive and counterproductive. I dread America will persist in this approach for years to come, reflective of a society divided and politicians, particularly on the right and within the GOP, increasingly keen to exacerbate hardships for those their respective factions deem as societal outcasts. More needless suffering, deaths, and imprisonment shall ensue, and #Murica will become more and more of a s**thole country.

Polish PM Donald Tusk, speaking on the prospect of a wider European war

War is no longer a concept from the past. It is real, and it started over two years ago. The most worrying thing at the moment is that literally any scenario is possible. We haven’t seen a situation like this since 1945. I know it sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun: the pre-war era. I’m not exaggerating; it’s becoming clearer every day.’ (CNN: Europe in ‘pre-war era,’ warns Poland’s Prime Minister Tusk, citing Russia’s threat. 3/29}

Roe vs. Wade is overturned, and all Hades breaks loose in #Murica. Is the country even worth saving? Ukraine, an honorable nation that is worth saving but has been largely forgotten by the American people, has not wavered in resisting Russia’s aggression

Michael Fischer/Picture Alliance/Getty Images

European leaders expected to formally accept Ukraine as a candidate to join the EU - Allowing Ukraine into the EU is the least Europe can do. Ukraine is defending the continent - indeed, the entire Western world, including ungrateful #Murica - from Putin’s tyranny. NATO membership next. (CNBC 6/23)

Russia is facing its worst recession in thirty years, and the ‘Putin Generation’ is paying the price - Putin is sacrificing the youth of his nation: Not only on the battlefields of Ukraine, but in ways that are severely curtailing their educational and future employment opportunities. (Business Insider 6/20)

[VIDEO] Moscow vows retaliation after Lithuania transit ban - It was Lithuania and the tiny Baltic Republics that led the way toward the eventual dissolution of the Soviet Union toward the end of the Cold War, and they’ve been among Ukraine’s strongest allies since Russia began its war of aggression on February 24. Naturally, Putin wants to destroy them, and eventually will if he is not brought to his knees. (Deutsche Welle 6/21)

Prayers for Sievierodonetsk: ‘Russia’s military machine persevered in its ferocious effort to grind down Ukraine’s defences Monday, as the war’s consequences for food and fuel supplies increasingly weighed on minds around the globe after warnings that the fighting could go on for years.’ (AP 6/20)

Jacquelyn Martin/AP

Sixty-eight percent of Americans polled believe the United States is less respected around the world today than in the past - If global opinion of America is ever to recover, it will only be due to another great heroic effort akin to defeating Nazism in World War II. We’re seen as the Nazis now, and increasingly #Murica defiantly lives down to stereotypes. (Pew Research Center 6/22)

Supreme Court votes to overturn Roe vs. Wade - As I’ve stated before, I do not speak about my feelings on abortion. As a legal, political, and social matter, all Hades is breaking loose. These judges are largely shielded from the consequences of their decisions, and maybe that’s a problem of its own. And I don’t know if the Framers desired for Justices to be as ideological as they’ve tended to be in recent times. Legal or illegal, abortions will continue to be performed, and the issue will continue to violently divide the nation. Why it’s such a hot-button topic here, whereas in Europe the issue is largely considered settled and rarely spoken about, I don’t know; but that’s not going to change anytime soon. (AP 6/24)

Ronald Brownstein: America is growing apart, possibly for good - As expensive as living can be in most of the ‘blue nation,’ the ‘red nation’ is not holding up well by most economic and social measures. This, as we witness states controlled by Republicans drift toward authoritarianism and reckless, uncontrolled populism. The rulings this week by the Supreme Court will only serve to further the divide, and the nation is going to break apart, sooner or later. We’re only learning now how good we had it in the final decades of the 20th century, as far as relative national unity, prosperity, and something of a shared vision of what it means to be an American. Such things must come from the heart and cannot be manufactured. Manufactured patriotism only comes through tyranny and brute force, as this world has witnessed far too often. But that is exactly what the Republican Party and its voters want. Most of these people are white, they are scared for their lives, and increasingly we’re seeing a willingness to go to extreme lengths to protect themselves from the real or perceived threats they face. Encouraged by years of conspiracy theories, religious zealots, and Donald Trump, they’re utterly convinced they are under attack. We’re going to have a hard time ever convincing them to stand down, or ever again convincing them of anything, period. It would take generations to repair the rift we have now, so perhaps we should agree to go our own separate ways. I doubt, however, we could even agree on that, as #Cult45 have become a proselytizing bunch determined to control the lives of all Americans. I didn’t always feel this way, but today I am grateful to live in Massachusetts. High cost of living aside. (The Atlantic 6/24)

Maybe now more of these people who have been on the fence concerning the dangers of nationalist populism, with the events of recent weeks, are finally recognizing what has been patently clear to the rest of us since before the 2016 presidential election: #Cult45 and all of its various factions have far surpassed the hard-left and their ‘woke’ agenda as the greater danger to domestic order and personal liberty. There is no compromise with a cult; no making common cause on some issues, no meeting them halfway, and no use in viewing them as some lesser of two evils. The hard-left have some awful ideas that repulse ordinary people, and I will not completely discount the great influence they hold over culture, education, major corporations, so on and blah, blah. Yet, by and large, their numbers are not that great and they have essentially been rendered more of an annoyance than anything else. The far-right, on the other hand, has become *the* mainstream of the Republican Party, ‘conservatism,’ and Christianity in America. They’re the ones filling the majority of state legislative seats. Tens of millions of people all around us are intently listening, many of them armed, all of them angry. In spite of their great love of calling others ‘snowflakes’ and other demeaning slurs - nurtured to great effect by Trump - they are the most thinned-skinned people imaginable, tolerating not even a hint of criticism or dissent. Typical, hypocritical human behavior, but 100% essential to maintaining the brainwashing of any given member of any given cult. Cultists firmly believe it is *they* who are the ‘free-thinkers,’ when there is literally not even one original thought to be found among the millions of them. Cultists are not lying when they say they are protecting liberty, because in their twisted minds that is exactly what they are doing. It is going to take all those ordinary people who, at one time or another, made common cause on certain issues with the right out of exasperation with the excesses of the hard-left, and are now going to have to put those quibbles aside and recognize who the true enemy is. The hour is late, all ordinary Americans of good faith must publicly and loudly refute this nation-killing madness now.

The United States is dying by its own hand, being killed by those who, on one hand, claim to love it most, and yet also falsely claim to be most betrayed by it. Putin’s stooges, wittingly or unwittingly. F**k you

Wishing all my friends who are moms, and to all moms, a wonderful Mother’s Day. And extra special blessings to all the Ukrainian mothers. #StopPutin #StandUpForUkraine Слава Україні

EA Worldview

I believe we are maybe two, three years away from the vast majority of white Americans rising up and explicitly demanding the ethnic cleansing of the United States. Led on by Donald Trump and the GOP. There is no way this union stands much longer, its people hate each other too much for that to be possible. There is no other logical end game for this extreme right brainwashing that has been so successful in destroying any semblance of unity - whatever that may or may not have entailed beforehand - in this dying country. And when the moment of the ultimate right-wing coup arrives, and it will, the nationalist populist alliance will sacrifice useful idiots such as Clarence Thomas, Candace Owens, Dan Bongino (is he black?), and the braying stereotypes known as Diamond and Silk. Bank on that, they are all useful idiots and each lower than an ‘Uncle Tom.’ We are in for ugly times in this Fascist hellhole, especially once #Murica finally gets done s**ting on President Biden - the best president this nation has had in decades, that an entire country is determined to undermine - and succeeds in pushing him aside. I hold zero hope in this nation’s people and this country has outlived its usefulness - once considerable and beneficial to global order - to humanity ...

I am begging President Joe Biden to assert his authority over this country. A country full of whining a**holes, enough already! Mr. President, address this persistent unpopularity in opinion polls, and set the people straight! My one complaint with this man is that he is, usually (there have been wonderful exceptions), too damn nice. Crack the whip, Mr. Biden, get #Murica in line. Marital law if need be, these malcontents are begging for it. Supporting Putin while they can see Ukrainian civilians are being targeted and killed, my god. How could I possibly stand with the people of my country, as a believer in God, when they cheer on such evil toward innocents and hate their own leader without due cause?

Christian nationalism and white supremacy are going to make an ostentatious last stand in #Murica - already doing so to a degree - and it’s going to be our final undoing as a nation. The people who claim to love this country the most will be most responsible for its demise …

Why hate modern #Murica, redneck nation? Have any of its most fervent adherents done even a single positive thing for this country in years? Truly? Do they do anything but express hate and engage in mindless tribalism, as if these were the Middle Ages? Does the @GOP really have anything of value, or no value, to offer this country, f**king airheads and useless dolts they are? Will the other party ever grow a spine and denounce populism for this country’s own good? Will the people of this country, so out-of-control and full of hate and ignorance, ever be brought to bear and listen to reason? I feel it so strongly in the air, people just want to start killing each other, and that is going to happen, soon. For my own personal safety, and for the sake of all that is good and holy, I pray God that He will bring this evil nation to its bloody knees. Seriously, 99% of you are f**king evil, America, and my God is going to make you pay for your evil.

Excerpt: ‘Starting late in 2020, prices for washing machines, couches and other big products jumped sharply as production limitations collided with high demand. Inflation has only accelerated since. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has further snarled supply chains, raising the prices of gas and other commodities in recent months and helping to push the Fed’s closely watched inflation index up 6.6 percent over the year through March. That is the fastest pace of inflation since 1982, and price gains are touching the highest level in decades across many advanced economies, including the eurozone and Britain.’ (New York Times 5/03)

The hard left and the nationalist populist right drowning out the center, and neither extreme has any love for Ukraine

John Minchillo/AP

The few million Americans on the hard left, and the many more millions of the nationalist populist right - #Cult45 - each want to commit genocide against all who disobey them. There is no other possible endgame for all of their madness. They have no intention of living in peace with others, they want the ‘others’ gone. Each extreme is a manifestation of their various resentments and their hatred for everybody who does not look, think, or act as they do. When the civil war begins in earnest, it will be those in the middle who will be targeted first by each belligerent side. To ideologues and murderous extremists - which roughly two-thirds of this country has either become or is becoming - not taking a side is the greatest sin of all. Truth be told, the rest of us are on a side: The side of reason and sanity. A losing battle. We had one last victory in November 2020, and as a result we have a president who is level-headed and doing what he can to slow down America’s descent into Hades. All he can do is try to slow it down, but the people of this country will not allow him to do so. Our battle is pretty well lost, we have entered the ‘gates of delirium’ (and if one wants an aural portrait of the hell that is about to descend upon the United States, google the song with that title and listen.) I’ve been feeling this coming on for several years, and the dread only grows stronger: We are closer to civil war than even its highest ringleaders know. #Murica

President Zelenskyy thanks President Biden and the American people for their support - Unfortunately, not all in #Murica are actually supporting Ukraine. Best I can tell, after about a week or two, most wanted to hear nothing more about it. They are more concerned with celebrity scandals, race baiting, and what others are doing with their private parts. All too many - a large percentage, and the loudest voices - have spent the last two years kicking and screaming for their right to be ignorant. Longer than two years, but it is reaching a fever pitch. The country is self-destructing, and anyone who thinks politicians, businessmen, and ‘elitists’ are solely to blame for that is a bloody fool. Thank you, President Zelenskyy, on behalf of that remnant of Americans who still want to live in an orderly and free universe. Слава Україні (Ukrinform 4/28)

Hard left icon Noam Chomsky spouts baseless conspiracy theories, praises Trump for seeking a ‘diplomatic solution’ to the war in Ukraine, and demands that innocent Ukrainians submit to Putin - It is the extreme left and extreme right that are driving the agendas of the Democratic and Republican parties, and they are the ones driving the public discourse. The plurality of people in the middle have been drowned out, and that is not by accident. Extremists always hate moderates more than they hate the extremists on the other end of the spectrum. It is becoming outright dangerous to be a moderate, to not take a side, in #Murica today. It is really no surprise that both extremes are falling over themselves to praise Vladimir Putin and victim-blame the Ukrainian people. It is no surprise they are turning a blind eye to the genocide occurring, as they wish nothing more than to witness a large-scale purging of the American population. Noam Chomsky and every hard left radical can join #Cult45 and the rest of the right-wing whack jobs in the depths of Hell. (Mediate 5/01)

Ode to Ukraine: Emerging global power and guiding light among nations

(VIDEO) The daily nationwide moment of silence, followed by the glorious national anthem of Ukraine - A magnificent piece of music, accompanied by English subtitles and stunning war footage. Some may call it propaganda, some may call it nationalism, but I only see necessary patriotism in a war that was not of their choosing. They are rolling up their sleeves and fighting back, as their forefathers did against the Nazi invaders in World War II. At that time, however, they were a vassal state of the Soviet Union. Now it is their time in history to achieve glory as a strong, independent nation. America’s day has just about passed - we’re one presidential election away from the death knell - and Russia’s time is long up. Both will only grow more dangerous, but never again will they be prosperous or respected the more they descend into darkness. #Murica is ultimately going to end up like the Middle East, full of warring tribes, religious extremism, and great poverty and ignorance. It is already playing out, we’re becoming a breeding ground for terrorism just as the lands that produced al Qaeda, Hezbollah, ISIS, and the rest of that scum.

But Ukraine is going to win their war. In time they are going to emerge as a great global power; a vital partner in the world’s last bastion of humanity in Europe - the one continent that, apart from a few rogue or not entirely cooperative players, has demonstrated it has learned its lessons about the horrors of war and tyranny. Beginning with Germany, of course. And along with Germany, France, the EU, and the UK, Ukraine will be a vital bulwark against the emerging Axis of Evil of India and China. Who will be joined by the fallen empires of Russia and (post-2024) America - both nonetheless remaining rich in natural resources and therefore to be (further) exploited and controlled by evil overlords in Beijing and Delhi. Of course, China and India have to make peace with one another before this plays out, but my gut says that process is already underway, with Putin playing the key role in mediating between them. Mutual animosity and distrust toward the West, as well as territorial aims such as retaking former Soviet states and reclaiming Taiwan, are driving these superpowers together. Pakistan may factor into this one way or the other; India will always be their blood rival, but it’s hard to see them making common cause with Europe.

Plucking America from the Western alliance, after we had always been the center and strongest power of it, would be the new Axis’ coup de grace. American nationalist populists are gradually moving away from championing alliances with other Western nations and toward favoring closer relations with Russia. But that’s #Murica: Ukraine is now the crossroads between the free world and the despotic backwaters, and they are the first line of defense between ‘us’ and ‘them.’ LORD, protect and uplift them, and bring the tyrant, Putin, to his knees. #StopPutin #StandWithUkraine Слава Україні

Ukrainian forces retake areas around Kyiv from Russian invaders, but horrific massacres of citizens in the village of Bucha are revealed, and Zelenskyy warns that retreating Russians may have booby-trapped dead bodies with explosives

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

Washington Post - Russian forces pull back from Kyiv, exposing horrors of war

Call the ‘special operation’ for exactly what it is: Deliberate and purposeful genocide of the Ukrainian people. The free world will not soon forget these atrocities, and Putin will be brought to justice. Dead or alive. The question is, will it be the Russian people who overthrow the tyrant? Or will it be NATO forces? Or will the brave, valiant, and superior Ukrainian forces eventually push deep into Russian territory to capture and kill the dictator themselves? Option three may seem a flight of fancy, but do not place any bets against the Armed Forces of Ukraine, for they are awesome. And they are out for Vlad’s blood. So of those three options, it is becoming clear that the best and most feasible one (coup in Moscow) is also the very least likely. Those Russians who are protesting and dissenting deserve praise and protection, but they are small in number. The majority of the Russian people are not only not going to lift a finger to stop Putin, but rather appear to be firmly standing by him. The Russian people, as a whole, are a lost cause and cannot be trusted. Rather like these grievance-filled losers making up the Vladimir Putin Fan Club in #Murica, but I digress: The future does not belong to dying empires, and the people in both will only grow colder at heart, more isolated, and poorer as the years go on. While nations like Ukraine rise and become vibrant and responsible bastions of freedom, opportunity, and security. Слава Україні

Federal judge declares Trump likely committed crimes following the 2020 election, Ukrainian refugees face more danger outside of their country, while America is busy arguing about celebrities

‘A federal judge on Monday ordered Trump attorney John Eastman to turn emails over to the Jan. 6 Committee. The judge also said that the former president likely committed crimes while trying to stay in power.’ Lock them up already. Trump, Eastman, and the entire cabal. Not condemning or judging any single individual, but literally every post on my feeds, FB and Twitter both, right now is about the incident at the Oscars. I wish people got this riled up and angry about what Putin is doing to the Ukrainian people, or the January 6 insurrection, or those spreading disinformation and refusing to follow protocol in the middle of a pandemic. #JustSaying

Ukrainian refugees are prime targets for human traffickers, and there doesn’t appear to be any shortage of these predators. Ukrainian Holocaust survivors forced to flee to Germany - Unspeakably horrible. Obviously a bit of irony that they’re going to Germany, but how proud I am of my blood brothers and sisters in Deutschland. No nation in history ever took greater responsibility for their sins, no nation has ever redeemed itself as they have, and no nation has ever rebuilt so successfully from the ruins of war than my ancestral homeland. And Ukraine shall rebuild, as well. #NeverAgain means never again, and Putin is the Hitler of our time. (AP 3/28)

In Brussels, President Biden announced an energy deal with the European Union to increase American natural gas exports to Europe, thus decreasing the continent’s reliance on Russia for their energy needs

VIDEO VIA FRANCE 24Biden announces deal to cut Europe's reliance on Russian gas

A massive achievement, and is going to go a long way toward mitigating the economic fallout of having to cut Russia out of global markets. President Biden deserves a lot of credit from the American people, the media, members of Congress, etc., but of course he will not receive it and this news is going to pass by largely unnoticed on these shores. As soon as gas prices fall, people are not thankful, they just merely move on to raging against the next big story of the day. The Ukrainian people, and the people of Europe – who have more skin in the game – by and large know better. Believe it, Vladimir Putin is not a happy man upon learning this news. More from UPI

March 25 (UPI) -- The United States and the European Union announced a new agreement Friday aimed at reducing Europe's dependency on Russian fossil fuels over the war in Ukraine.

The deal was announced amid U.S President Joe Biden's trip to Europe that is aimed at fortifying an allied response to aid Ukraine and punish Russia for its invasion of its neighbor.

Biden and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen produced a joint statement Thursday following their meeting that expressed their unity in condemning Russia's "unjustified and unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine."

It also mentioned that they will work to establish a joint task for to address the immediate security needs of the EU.

"The Task Force will be chaired by a representative from the White House and a representative of the president of the European Commission," the United States and European Commission said in a joint statement. (Read more)

Kyiv woman who had her home burned down by Russian shelling says a relative in Moscow believes the Ukrainians are destroying their own properties on purpose

We are now seeing - in earnest, for the first time since Nazi Germany - the full effects and results of years of gaslighting - how it warps hearts and minds, and ultimately leads to bloodshed and horrific destruction. As for America, the January 6 insurrection, the continuing belligerence shown toward COVID-19 protocol, and the fact everybody wants to tear their neighbors' throats out all merely portend the hell these hate-filled fools are going to unleash upon the earth. It is the biggest nations on said earth – China, India, Russia, and the United States – that are backsliding toward a new level of despotism and are poised to form a new Axis of Evil to rule the planet. Once the domestic Fascist Cabal – agents of Putin, all - get President Biden and his administration out of the way, and once they start liquidating all the ‘undesirables,’ America will have completed its turn from an imperfect bastion of liberty to hellish despot and predator upon humanity. Europe will be eaten alive without any reasonably viable allies in the world (the likes of Australia, Japan, or maybe Canada being able to do much in this scenario are slim.) Is this what we all want for our near-future and for the long-term? Because people sure are acting as if that is what they want. All due to being fed a diet of never-ending grievance, and the innate desire of man that his ignorance must never be questioned but championed instead. Yours truly has plenty of grievances of his own and does not proclaim to know everything, but at least I know better than to hide behind demagogues, or to work to destroy the global order and replace it with something that would ultimately be far worse - a dystopia than these fools cannot conceive of in their little minds.

With support from Congressional Democrats and Republicans both, President Biden announces ban on Russian oil imports

iStock

‘Bipartisan’ doesn’t necessarily translate to ‘popular’ with the general public, but of course banning Russian oil imports is the right move to make at this time. It is a move that is ultimately going to cost President Biden and the members of Congress from both parties politically. At the end of the day the American people care nothing about Ukraine’s plight and only about their ‘right’ to have perpetually cheap oil. Paying more at the pump is painful and I’ve felt that pain, but the amount of whining I’m seeing everywhere given the circumstances is just too much. Americans are not getting pinched as Europeans are, but one wouldn't know it from listening to an average American talk. Far from perfect, but my eyes continue to be opened to how absolutely awful human nature really is – particularly when the group of humans in question have largely been exceptionally privileged and wealthy by historical standards. #StandWithUkraine  -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Striking harder at Russia’s economy, President Joe Biden on Tuesday ordered a ban on Russian oil imports in retaliation for Vladimir Putin’s onslaught in Ukraine. The major trade action, responding to the pleas of Ukraine’s embattled leader, thrust the U.S. out front as Western nations seek to halt Putin’s invasion.

Americans will feel pain, too – at the gas pump – Biden acknowledged, declaring, “Defending freedom is going to cost.”

The imports have been a glaring omission in the massive sanctions put in place on Russia over the invasion. Energy exports have kept a steady stream of cash flowing to Russia despite otherwise severe restrictions on its financial sector.

“We will not be part of subsidizing Putin’s war,” Biden said, calling the new action a “powerful blow” against Russia’s ability to fund the ongoing offensive.

Biden said the U.S. was acting in close consultation with European allies, who are more dependent on Russian energy supplies and who he acknowledged may not be able to join in immediately. The announcement marked the latest Biden attempt at cutting off Russia from much of the global economy and ensuring that the Ukraine invasion is a strategic loss for Putin, even if he manages to seize territory.

“Ukraine will never be a victory for Putin,” Biden said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a tweet praised Biden’s action: “Thankful for US and @POTUS personal leadership in striking in the heart of Putin’s war machine and banning oil, gas and coal from US market. Encourage other countries and leaders to follow.”

The European Union this week will commit to phasing out its reliance on Russia for energy needs as soon as possible, but filling the void without crippling EU economies will likely take some time. The U.K., which is no longer part of the EU, announced Tuesday that oil and oil products from Russia will be phased out by the end of the year.

Unlike the U.S., which is a major oil and gas producer, Europe relies on imports for 90% of its gas and 97% of its oil products. Russia supplies 40% of Europe’s gas and a quarter of its oil. The U.S. does not import Russian natural gas. (Read more)

Vladimir Putin has lost his mind and destroyed his own country, harkening back to the darkest of Soviet times; Russia’s economy likely to become nothing more than ‘a gigantic military factory’

Steve Benson/Arizona Republic

Life in Russia has never been a picnic, but it’s now about to endure a level of tyranny and militarism not seen since Stalin. That is, if Vladimir Putin survives the year without being overthrown. Several possibilities, none of them good for Mother Russia. From Kyiv Independent -

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing economic crisis caused by Western sanctions have already transformed Russia.

The country’s economy is expected to shrink by 20% in the second quarter and by around 3.5% for the full year following intensified sanctions, JPMorgan said on Feb. 28.

However, analysts say that the war is having an even greater impact on Russian society, with the country fast-track turning into a rogue totalitarian state.

There is a major crackdown on dissent, and Russia may also switch to a planned economy similar to the Soviet one.

“The leader becomes a person who never makes mistakes and is always right like the Pope,” Russian political analyst Dmitry Oreshkin told the Echo of Moscow radio station in a reference to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on March 1. (Read more)

Germany steps up in the fight against Putin, reverses ban on weapon sales to Ukraine and announces it will support SWIFT banking restrictions on Russia

AP/Christoph Schmidt/dpa

At this time 80 years ago, Germany was the aggressor. Today, it is arguably the leader of the free world; a peaceful, prosperous, and responsible nation. Could Russia ever make that same transition? There were high hopes at the end of the Cold War, but those have been gradually shattered as Vladimir Putin came to power and set about restoring the empire. Germany’s redemption was due, in large part, to the strong character and work ethic of the German people (full disclosure - I am of German blood, so I may be a little biased.) While I do not wish to entirely disparage the Russian people, I’ve seen scant evidence over the years that they possess those same qualities that allowed Germany to successfully rebuild. Indeed, it has been 30 years since the fall of the Soviet Union, but Russia remains a despotic and largely impoverished backwater whose only leverage comes from its large geographic size, its military might (re: nuclear weapons), and its cunning, evil mastermind dictator. Associated Press

VIENNA (AP) — In a significant shift, the German government said Saturday it will send weapons and other supplies directly to Ukraine, which is fighting to keep Russia from invading its capital city. Germany is also ready to also support some restrictions of the SWIFT global banking system for Russia, officials said.

Germany’s chancellery announced Saturday evening that it will send 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 “Stinger” surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine “as quickly as possible.”

“The Russian invasion of Ukraine marks a turning point. It threatens our entire post-war order,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a statement. “In this situation, it is our duty to help Ukraine, to the best of our ability, to defend itself against Vladimir Putin’s invading army.”

The news came shortly after the German economy and climate ministry said in a Saturday evening statement that Germany is allowing the Netherlands to ship 400 German-made anti-tank weapons to Ukraine. The government has also approved the shipment of 9 D-30 howitzers and ammunition originally from Estonia.

Germany had long stuck to a policy of not exporting deadly weapons to conflict zones, including Ukraine. As recently as Friday, government officials said they would abide by that policy. (Read more)

The United States joins the EU and UK in levying personal sanctions on Vladimir Putin and his foreign minister

AP/Andreea Alexandru

An important and necessary step, but it is not at all clear that anything is going to dissuade Putin from carrying this invasion further. Associated Press -

BRUSSELS (AP) — The Biden administration announced Friday that it will move to freeze the assets of President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, following the European Union and Britain in directly sanctioning top Russian leadership.

The Treasury Department announced the sanctions shortly after the EU said it had also approved an asset freeze against Putin and Lavrov as part of a broader package of sanctions against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also told NATO leaders during a call Friday that Britain would move to impose sanctions against Putin and Lavrov.

It wasn’t immediately clear how impactful an asset freeze would be on Putin or Lavrov, but the direct action targeting the Russian president was meant to be seen as a warning to Putin that he could emerge as an international pariah if he doesn’t end the invasion of Ukraine. (Read more)

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is underway, and already the global economy is feeling the effects

Prayers for Ukraine. Vladimir Putin is the Hitler of our time. God help Ukraine -

Stocks plunged and oil prices surged by more than $5 per barrel Thursday after President Vladimir Putin launched military action in Ukraine, prompting Washington and Europe to vow sanctions on Moscow that may roil the global economy.

Market benchmarks in Europe and Asia fell by as much as 4% as traders tried to figure out how large Putin's incursion would be and the scale of Western retaliation. Wall Street futures retreated by an unusually wide daily margin of 2.5%.

Brent crude oil briefly jumped above $100 per barrel in London for the first time since 2014 on unease about possible disruption of supplies from Russia, the No. 3 producer. Benchmark U.S. crude briefly surpassed $98 per barrel. Prices of wheat and corn also jumped.

The ruble sank 7.5% against the dollar.

Financial markets are in a “flight to safety and may have to price in slower growth" due to high energy costs, Chris Turner and Francesco Pesole of ING said in a report. (Read more)

The beginnings of World War III? Putin boldly declares that all of Ukraine belongs to Russia, recognizes the independence of the separatist provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk; Russian troops being sent in for ‘peacekeeping functions’

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has recognised breakaway rebel regions in Ukraine's east as independent states.

The self-declared people's republics of Donetsk and Luhansk are home to Russia-backed rebels who have been fighting Ukrainian forces since 2014.

Russia's move is likely to end peace talks in the region, which has been under a tenuous ceasefire for years.

Western powers also fear it could pave the way for Russian military forces to enter Ukraine's eastern regions.

Shortly after the announcement, Mr Putin signed an order for troops to perform so-called "peacekeeping functions" in both regions. The extent of the mission remains unclear, but if troops cross the border it would be the first time Russian soldiers have officially entered rebel-held territory.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the move amounted to "a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine" and breaks international law. He called it "a very ill omen and a very dark sign". Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the UK would announce new sanctions on Russia on Tuesday.

The EU pledged to "react with unity, firmness and with determination in solidarity with Ukraine".

Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison rejected the suggestion that Russian troops would have a peacekeeping brief, telling reporters: "It's unacceptable, it's unprovoked, it's unwarranted ... some suggestion that they are peacekeeping is nonsense."

The move by Vladimir Putin deepens the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, which is surrounded by more than 150,000 Russian troops on its borders. Russia has denied planning to invade, but the US believes Mr Putin is preparing an imminent attack. (Read more

Meanwhile, President Biden is making it clear the United States means business, imposing sanctions prohibiting trade and investment in the two breakaway provinces, and the United Nations Security Council will be holding an emergency meeting. Frankly, war probably cannot be prevented now, and this evil man, Vladimir Putin, cannot be constrained. Ukraine is doomed, and the other former Soviet republics are likely not far behind in being reabsorbed into the evil empire.

President Biden warns Americans to leave Ukraine

AFP via Getty Images

If one is an American currently in Ukraine and somehow reading these words, ‘take heed.’ Everybody else, don’t point the finger of blame at the president when Russia invades and Americans remain stuck in Ukraine. He has given fair warning. -

US President Joe Biden has called on all American citizens remaining in Ukraine to leave the country immediately, citing increased threats of Russian military action.

Mr Biden said he would not send troops to rescue Americans if Moscow invades Ukraine.

He warned that "things could go crazy quickly" in the region.

Russia has repeatedly denied any plans to invade Ukraine despite massing more than 100,000 troops near the border.

But it has just begun massive military drills with neighbouring Belarus, and Ukraine has accused Russia of blocking its access to the sea

The Kremlin says it wants to enforce "red lines" to make sure that its former Soviet neighbour does not join Nato. (Read more)
