‘TDS’: Trump regime moves to classify political opposition as mental illness — the insane reality of living under a dictatorship

A dark, stylised illustration of a distressed young blonde woman lying upon a metal examination table in a dilapidated institutional ward. She weareth a light dress and appeareth frightened and tearful, her face contorted in anguish. Broad leather straps secure her wrists, torso, thighs, and legs. Three nurses in white uniforms and red caps surround her beneath a harsh overhead lamp. One recordeth notes on a clipboard; the other two stand close, observing with serious expressions. The room hath cracked tiles, stained walls, barred windows, and ageing furnishings—an oppressive mid-century psychiatric atmosphere. Muted colours, heavy shadows, and stark lighting heighten fear, confinement, and vulnerability. A dramatic allegory of institutional authority, coercive treatment, and emotional distress.

Not science fiction, but the reality of living in a burgeoning dictatorship: the Trump regime is taking serious steps to classify any and all opposition from individuals as mental illness (‘TDS’). {Right Wing Watch 25 June}

Unfortunately for sanity, the truly mad have won the day, and the remaining sane people in the former United States are in serious, serious trouble.The regime is telling us as much. But do enjoy your cheap gas and eggs, #Murica. Oh wait, about that.…

Make America Mean Again: the vulgarian's coarseness is a contagion—Therapists warn that Trump’s bad behaviour is rubbing off on the general public

image generated via Google Gemni

{Huffington Post 9 October} ‘Therapists Warn This Normalized Trump Behavior Is Causing Real-World Harm: People often look up to the president — and in this case, that’s clearly a problem.’

“At the end of the day, at the core of it all, we are normalizing bullying,” Believe it or not, there are those of us in this rotting #Murica who saw through the orange charlatan from the moment he waddled into the political spotlight during the 2016 presidential election: all bluster and hollow pomp, a grotesque fusion of snake-oil salesman and a game-show host gone feral. Even then—and it was as plain as the noonday sun—many of us warned that his dark little genius was to offer his followers the most seductive narcotic of all: permission. Permission to be vile. To wallow in their worst instincts. To spit, to sneer, and to call it honesty, faith, and love of country. He told them, in essence, “Be monstrous—it’s patriotic.” And they bloody well believed him.

And so the poison spread. The result? A nation turned septic. It was plain to behold amid the pandemic: tantrums over mask mandates, anti-vax derangement, the whole ghastly carnival of ignorance dressed up as rebellion. Hundreds of thousands needlessly dead—martyrs not to liberty, but to pride: gross, swollen, and witless. They mistook selfishness for freedom, and obstinacy for courage.

And did anyone learn a damned thing from that grotesque morality play? Not a whit. We have stumbled straight into a moral sinkhole—truth now counteth for nought, cruelty is held a grace, and irony lies entombed beside empathy. The temper of the multitude hath soured to gall. Everyone is furious, yet few hearken, and the whole place feels like a sorry rehearsal for the end of civilisation.

One cannot build a functioning society upon spite and delusion. One cannot write a decent song—much less govern a free polity—when every voice screams in its own discordant key. All is but clamour now: harsh, unmelodious, and void of delight. The spirit of this age? A nation of amplifiers, each howling into the void, drunk upon the echo of its own folly. Verily, few tyrants in the annals of the world have so perfectly mirrored the collective nature of their countries in their appointed ages as hath Donald Trump. —Arthur Newhook, 9 October 2025.

The eighty-seven-year-old former publisher of the Soviet-era Pravda found dead after a so-called ‘nervous breakdown'. - One does begin to wonder—what is it with Russians and their perennial tendency to fall from windows? Granted, it is among the more miserable places on earth to dwell, yet the pattern remains curiously consistent, yeah? {The Times 6 October}

{alternate text for the above image} A digitally rendered dystopian tableau depicting a young woman with silver-blonde hair standing solemnly in a deserted urban canyon. She wears a bright yellow dress that glows defiantly against the cold, blue-grey gloom of the city. In her hands she clutches an American flag—not as a banner of triumph, but as an emblem of anguish and endurance. Towering screens on all sides project the shouting face of Donald Trump, his mouth frozen mid-harangue, echoing the omnipresent propaganda of an authoritarian state. Around her swarm identical men in suits, their faces contorted in mockery, fingers jabbing accusingly toward her as they chant slogans of populist fervour. The cracked pavement beneath her feet and the discarded placards reading Make America Great Again evoke the moral ruin of a nation intoxicated by cruelty. Her stillness, luminous amid the jeering mob, becomes the lone act of grace in a society drowning in its own hostility.

Medicaid, madness, and the unbearable weight of disillusionment with it all

Someone who was once very special to me but is no longer the gentle soul she was—and who happens to be disabled—is very likely going to lose her Medicaid coverage and will be financially ruined. Yet there she is on X-Twitter, praising her favourite president on the 4th of July. And here I am, desperately just wanting this whole bloody world to stop. The depths of my disillusionment with humanity have become utterly insurmountable. —Arthur Newhook, 5 July 2025.

The United States of Entertainment: A realm where personality cults, reprobates, and tyrants flourish, and where free will, critical thinking, and basic decency meet their demise

AI generated image

Observing grown adults engage in overt idol worship, fervently insisting on their idols' infallibility and suppressing dissent, is not only lamentable but also profoundly disturbing. This starkly contradicts the ideals of human liberty, critical thinking, and rugged individualism that the United States ostensibly once championed but now disregards. Full stop! I refuse to conform to a society where select mortals (rather mediocre ones, at that) are propped up by perpetual media hype and wield such influence over vast numbers of people that some adherents are practically (or literally) prepared to kill for them. It is important to note that I am not exclusively referring to #Cult45 and not solely pointing the finger at DJT.

The ceaseless idol worship of a disposable, thoroughly mediocre pop music star (initials ‘T.S.’) is becoming more than a mere annoyance. I am genuinely concerned about people’s mental health, and our corrupt media is to blame for enabling these charismatic charlatans - and there are others beyond the aforementioned, such as Elon Musk, who may be classified as an existential threat alongside Trump - to cultivate personality cults. This is not the country and society I grew up in, one that valued freedom of expression, critical thinking, and rugged individualism. That was the United States of America. Now, we are the United States of Entertainment, a country of sheep; anyone daring to stray from the herd shall be 'canceled.'

How did we reach this point, teetering on the edge of outright Fascist theocracy, while the majority of Americans remain blissfully ignorant? Supporting a pop star for enabling voter registration at concerts will not stop Trump, the GOP, and #Cult45 from imposing tyranny. Showing genuine support for the one person standing between us and Fascism - President Joe Biden - would be a better course. Yet, all I see is complaining and fretting over trivial matters, most notably his age. We are not a serious people. President Biden has held this diverse nation together amid serious storms, highlighting his worth and integrity, yet is never recognized for this. The lack of respect for competence and decency, while narcissistic buffoons are held up as role models, makes me sick.

School avoidance: Students refusing to go to school a growing crisis post-COVID

AI generated image via Hotpot API

'School avoidant behavior, also called school refusal, is when a school-age child refuses to attend school or has difficulty being in school for the entire day. Several mental health experts told USA TODAY it has become a crisis that has gotten worse since the COVID-19 pandemic.' The only reason I was not one of these kids was out of extreme fear of authority (most of all, my parents), along with outright ignorance that I even had any option of opting out. Back in the ‘80s and early ‘90s - at least in my area - even the most rotten kids still did not dare cut classes on any sort of regular basis. One time, late in senior year, we took off in some kid’s car to eat lunch at a local pizza joint, and were relieved that we didn’t get caught. I may have snuck out of a pep rally or two, but that was about the extent that I would ever dare ‘play hooky.’ In retrospect, I should have just said ‘f**k it’ and not have cared. For all the good earning decent grades, dutifully following the rules, and dealing with my a**hole peers ultimately did me; I may have even turned out a more healthy person than the one I became. Still, I would not want to be a kid today for anything, and I do not blame these ones for pushing back against the hellscape they were born into. {USA Today 5/15}

‘Tiredness of life’ has become more common among seniors in Western countries

AI generated image via Hotpot API

As Republicans move to end Social Security, is it any wonder there are not mobs with pitchforks outside out of every local GOP headquarters in this country, when the elderly and disabled are of such an overall low priority? FTA: ‘The fact that this problem is common enough for researchers to debate it may suggest that modern life has shut older people out of western society. Perhaps elders are no longer revered for their wisdom and experience. But it’s not inevitable. In Japan, age is seen as a spring or rebirth after a busy period of working and raising children. One study found older adults in Japan showed higher scores on personal growth compared with midlife adults, whereas the opposite age pattern was found in the US.

'Surgeon and medical professor Atul Gawande argues that in western societies, medicine has created the ideal conditions for transforming ageing into a “long, slow fade”. He believes quality of life has been overlooked as we channel our resources towards biological survival. This is unprecedented in history. Tiredness of life may be evidence of the cost.' {The Conversation 5/03}

Proof of Russian atrocities - genocide - continue to proliferate, strongman Orban is reelected in Hungary, thoughts on new CDC data on the societal impact of COVID lockdowns, and more

EPA/Atef Safadi

This Twitter thread by ABC News reporter James Longman on the war crimes in Bucha is a hard read, but a painfully necessary one. The Russian soldiers are psychopathic brutes, and they are conditioned that way purposefully. They have been this way for centuries, and they are going to keep raping, pillaging, and killing until they are stopped.

‘The skill and bravery of Ukrainian gunners is obvious. But those dramatic videos also hint at Ukraine’s integration and deployment of two key technologies—laser-guided artillery shells and laser-equipped drones’ (Forbes 4/05)

The Kremlin

Putin hails populist authoritarian Viktor Orban’s re-election in Hungary - Viktor Orban has yet to become a serious menace, just a minor one; he has allowed Ukrainian refugees to cross into Hungary, he did join in on certain sanctions against Russia, and he has not attempted to invade any of his neighbors. He is an insufferable religious zealot and overbearingly paternalistic in everything he does. Let us consider that Vladimir Putin himself spent years cultivating a certain, grudging kind of respectability about him before he put the knife in Ukraine’s back. Orban is following the same playbook, and in time he will become dangerous, as opposed to merely a thorn in everyone’s side. (BBC News 4/04)

Direct TV drops One America News network - When is my cable provider (Verizon Fios) going to follow suit? Russian propaganda and lies do not have any place in our society. (Bloomberg 4/04)

The FBI is spending millions on social media tracking software - Of course, free speech absolutists like the ACLU are whining, as are nationalist populists like Rep. Jim Jordan, who zealously guard their free speech but seek to silence everyone else. Social media is full of disinformation - the vast majority of it emanating from Russia - and millions not only willingly parroting said disinfo, but actually believing it. The FBI’s plan doesn’t go nearly far enough in cleaning up this cesspool. (Washington Post 4/05)

Thinkstock

CDC data highlights COVID-19's toll on student mental health; 55% of kids claim to have experienced abuse from parents and guardians - Covidiots hate the CDC, but they are also eagerly pointing to this CDC study saying that COVID protocol had an adverse effect on kids. Obviously, and anyone half a brain knew going in that was going to be the case. Pretty certain yours truly said that would happen. So eager to say ‘told you so’ are they, but guess what? These are kids we are speaking of, and they’ll get over whatever ‘trauma’ they were put through because they couldn’t go to a school for awhile, and they had to wear masks, and eventually get vaccinated. Nearly one million Americans are dead now, but I shudder to think how much worse it could have been if these measures had not been undertaken. I seem to vaguely recall somebody somewhere estimating that upwards of five million would have died if measures were not enacted to stop the spread. You want to know where children actually are being abused? In Ukraine, where they are being raped, abducted, and killed by Russian soldiers. So excuse me if I don’t feel much sympathy for little American boys and girls acting out because those mean grown-ups made them wear a mask in public, and their stressed-out mothers and fathers might snap on them from time-to-time. A degree - and only to an acceptable degree, of course - of emotional and even physical pain is an inevitable and unavoidable part of growing up. The trauma I was put through as a kid, primarily by my peers, forever shaped my worldview and rather low opinion of people in general. What is being done to the kids of Ukraine is unforgivable, real abuse of the highest order. Spoiled American kids having to follow, along with everybody else, basic protocol in the midst of the deadly pandemic in over a century pales in comparison. This ought to provide some perspective for those who have spent the last two years shouting their mouths off to anyone who would listen about what a supposed grave violation of human rights these health and safety measures were. But it won’t, for the nationalist populists are only becoming more unhinged in their words and actions. No sympathy here for the spoiled little brats, or the far-right individuals and factions using them as a political talking point. (K-12 Dive 4/01)

A country going to Hell in a handbasket: Hasidic Jew brutally assaulted in NYC, and extremism becomes the ‘new normal’ in #Murica

Josh Edelson/AFP/Getty Images

The ‘traditional’ crowd on Twitter and across social media. Ultra-right-wing, ultra-nationalist (some even adopting the ‘Fascist’ label), openly racist, misogynist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, and basically calling for anyone who doesn’t think like them to be made to conform - always implicitly suggested, but the language now is becoming more direct and blatant. Yearning for a glorious past that was never as glorious or as simple as they imagine. So willing to wage hell on earth in order to enforce this return to antiquity. So zealous of their ‘free speech,’ yet so eager and willing to impose ideological purity on all. In whole, more than a tad scary that all these fringe groups on the extremes are more influential than they've, perhaps, ever been in America. At least since the 1930s, and there were periods of extremism throughout the 19th and early 20th Centuries. The stakes have never been higher, and one who downplays the threat of political extremism does so at our peril.

Extremism is coming from all directions in the U.S. today, but the nationalist populist/neo-Fascist contingent is the most numerous of these fringe factions, all of whom are dangerous; after the insurrection of January 6, 2021, they have become the most dangerous and most serious in their intentions. Without question, they are the most conspiracy-minded, and the ones most given to cultism. And ask any of them, and every single one will say we’re all the crazy ones and they are sane. How is greater society ever going to reason with these people, especially as they become a greater percentage of the overall population? How are we going to even continue to have a civil society when everybody hates each other and nobody can agree on what reality is? We’re doomed, and it’s the very people who believe they are saving us - populists, religious zealots, cable TV talking heads, white supremacists, black nationalists, neo-Marxists, etc. - and their many acolytes that are showing themselves to be our undoing.

Brooklyn teens jump Hasidic man as police report hate crimes against Jews skyrocket across NYC - Hate crimes are soaring all over the United States, particularly against Jews. The staggering toll the pandemic has taken on mental health

Getty Images

Via a new report from the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy -

Mental health worsened amid pandemic, especially in women, young adults

An estimated 53.2 million additional cases of major depressive disorder and 76.2 million additional cases of anxiety disorders occurred during the pandemic, with women and young people most affected, according to a study published late last week in The Lancet.

The researchers used a systematic literature review to find 48 eligible data sources, 46 involving major depressive disorder and 27 involving anxiety disorders. The studies, which were conducted from Jan 1, 2020, to Jan 29, 2021, were used to extrapolate global data using the Global Burden of Disease Study Model; most were from Western Europe (22) and high-income North America (14).

The pandemic was linked to an additional 53.2 million cases of major depressive disorder (a 27.6% increase) and an additional 76.2 million cases of anxiety disorders (a 25.6% increase). The countries with the most COVID-19 cases and the least population movement (eg, because of lockdowns) saw the greatest increases.

Women saw greater increases than men (29.8% vs 24.0% increase for depression, 27.9% vs 21.7% increase for anxiety). Also, young people ages 20 to 24 had the highest increased prevalence, which then declined with age. According to a Lancet press release, this age group saw 1,118 additional depression cases per 100,000 people for depression and 1,331 additional anxiety cases per 100,000 people.

"The study also has a few key limitations, largely resulting from the available data rather than the approach used to analyse them," write Maxime Taquet, PhD, BM BCh, and others in a related commentary, noting the uncertainties of extrapolated and self-reported data, as well as the study's inability to identify the reason for these outcomes.

"Aid programmes aimed at improving population mental health are clearly needed widely, and this study is unable to suggest specific countries to be targeted first. Measurement of clinical diagnoses will be needed to plan service provision, ascertain the burden of the pandemic in terms of mental disorders, and forecast social and economic consequences. Crucially, identifying causal mechanisms, and modifiable mechanisms in particular, will be important to design and deliver the right interventions to the right people." (Read more)
