Packed like sardines: the crowded Commonwealth

Via the Boston board on Reddit: MA Ballot 7 Small Lot — https://www.reddit.com/r/boston/comments/1x1sj9g/ma_ballot_7_small_lot/

Am not advocating for forcing people to depart Massachusetts. Perchance we might strongly encourage the MAGA folk to seek out some locale more amenable to their politics, but I digress, for such a measure would be neither lawful nor terribly democratic. Nor is there, I suppose, a great deal that may presently be done about the root problem at hand. Nevertheless, we have simply far too many individuals living within this geographically diminutive state, most especially in and around Boston. In truth, throughout this entire region of the country, we have too many people occupying too little space.

A detailed editorial illustration depicts a petite auburn-haired woman squeezed between gridlocked traffic and a sprawling construction site overlooking Boston. She wears a black lace corset dress with gartered stockings and heeled boots, while a cream coat hangs loosely from her shoulders. Her windswept hair and weary expression suggest exasperation rather than glamour alone. Cars choke the descending street behind her as cranes, excavators, scaffolding and unfinished concrete consume the opposite side. Autumn foliage and warm evening light beautify an otherwise claustrophobic scene, contrasting sensual elegance with the congestion, relentless development and diminishing personal space of contemporary Greater Boston.

The older I get, the less I am able to abide being packed together like sardines; yet I am in no position to leave, and whither, in any case, doth one go? The whole blasted country is falling apart, whilst neither Canada nor Europe appears especially eager to receive an influx of Americans, for which, frankly, they cannot be blamed.

But there it is: overpopulation lieth at the root of all of the world’s miseries. More people, more problems; thus hath it ever been. It is why seemingly every remaining inch of land in Eastern Massachusetts is being devoured, and why getting from Point A to Point B proves a wretched ordeal each time one ventures forth. Why, even getting around my town at present is a royal pain in the arse, with so many streets closed off for roadwork. More cars and more people mean more congestion, greater wear upon infrastructure, and ever more demands upon the roads themselves. I never want to leave my abode anymore, and I am stressed to the gills every single time I am compelled to do so. Thankfully — in a sense, at least — my health and circumstances allow me to remain at home most of the time, yet I do not envy those who must be out there as a matter of daily necessity (most people). This is torture, and not exactly how human beings are hardwired to live.

Overpopulation is a nightmare, and its consequences manifest themselves everywhere upon this beleaguered planet: from climate change, to crime, to chronic housing shortages, and unto every manner of societal ill. More people, more problems.

The plague of Summer 2026

Not at liberty to divulge details, but I can confirm that the younger siblings of one of the deceased children mentioned in the article continue to terrorise our community, and their pitiful excuses for parents have not shown the slightest remorse. Belligerent fools who behave as though they were living on an isolated ranch rather than in suburban Boston. Ban the bloody bikes altogether.

An empty parsonage, an unanswered prayer

A photorealistic wide view depicts a weathered white New England parsonage standing in silence beneath soft afternoon light. An overgrown lawn surrounds the neglected porch, where an open suitcase spills clothing onto the steps beside a discarded clerical collar. In the foreground, a visa application and airline ticket stamped “CANCELLED” are pinned beneath a smooth stone, while a small Nigerian flag pin lies abandoned in the dirt nearby. A distant church steeple rises through the trees, barely visible beyond the house. Long shadows, peeling paint and the abandoned belongings combine to evoke profound loneliness, interrupted vocation and the quiet finality of a life abruptly uprooted.

Jesus was nowhere to be found for this servant of the Lord. FTA:

Under U.S. Department of Homeland Security regulations, Madu had to leave the country to renew his religious worker visa, known as an R-1 visa, according to church officials. While the department recently eliminated the requirement for R-1 recipients to wait a full year before applying for a renewal, options for the church to keep Madu legally in the U.S. were limited because the federal government has suspended processing of certain immigration cases for 75 countries, including Nigeria.

According to the US-Nigeria Civil Society Coalition, Madu suffered from intense emotional distress regarding his anticipated return to Nigeria, where there has been a rise in the kidnappings and killings of Catholic clergy.

Shortly before he passed away, he told parishioners and stated in a farewell message on the parish website that leaving the country was completely out of his hands. He wrote, "Sincerely, it is not my wish to return home right now, but circumstances beyond my control have warranted that my time in the United States come to an end. My heart is broken, yet my joy remains," he wrote, adding that he'd gladly return to minister and will miss the community.

The Boston Globe reported that Madu received emergency room treatment at a hospital after experiencing a panic attack on the Sunday prior to his death, which occurred as he was driving to celebrate Mass.

The death of journalism in Trump’s #Murica: veteran political analyst Jon Keller laid off from CBS Boston

A composed, silver-haired man in a tailored dark suit and red patterned tie stands against a studio backdrop of deep blue and muted red, the lighting casting a soft sheen across his glasses. His neatly trimmed moustache and calm, observant expression convey the seasoned poise of a veteran broadcaster. A discreet lapel microphone rests against his jacket—an emblem of his trade. The faint outlines of stars and a stylised civic dome behind him evoke the world of political discourse, situating him within the milieu of televised analysis. Captured mid-glance, he appears both attentive and mildly amused, the faintest smile betraying a journalist’s sceptical wit. The image, rich in compositional balance and tonal warmth, distils the essence of modern American political commentary—urbane, self-contained, and quietly reflective of the tension between authority and affability.
Boston Globe

{Boston Herald 30 October} ‘WBZ’s Jon Keller and other employees let go by Boston TV station’

Jon Keller is one of the last practitioners of a vanishing art—an authentic television/radio news reporter, genuinely ‘fair and balanced’, whose broadcasts were marked by actual fairness, discernment and intellectual depth. And now, inevitably, he too hath been cast aside as the tide of mediocrity and fealty swells.

It is a sombre augury of our times: CBS/Paramount have plainly capitulated to the Trump regime in their corporate cowardice—as is elsewhere abundantly chronicled—and their news division is now sliding headlong into that sordid morass of spectacle and distraction wherein the regime would fain see all public discourse entombed. The less we think, the more we watch; servitude made palatable through the sugar of sensation.

I do hope Mr Keller finds another pulpit from which to speak, but he is not a young man and I would not begrudge him if he were to seek repose now. In either case, much gratitude to Jon Keller for all he hath done to better inform New England citizens, and I am now even less inclined to bother watching local television news given how every station is now but a hollow echo of its former self. —Arthur Newhook, 30 October 2025.

What the bloody hell is happening here?

Believe it or not, in these suburban outskirts of Boston, a family of Trump supporters and rustic folk hath taken up residence. Moreover, they have chosen the high school's driveway situated behind my dwelling as the ideal locale for their two young lads to heedlessly navigate their motor bikes. On this very day, I found myself outdoors indulging in a cigarette, and these two youths descended the gentle incline behind my home, mere feet away from where I was standing, seemingly intent on demonstrating their skills before me. Without a second thought, I raised my voice to them: "Gentlemen, be careful! Be careful!” They gazed upon me with vacant countenances, as if never before having received admonishment in their young lives (which may very well be the case). Following this, I loudly urged them to depart, saying and with an almost demonic gleam in my eyes, "go, go!" And indeed, they did depart without a word. Never did I explicitly forbid them from riding their scooters - though such a notion was implied - but only sought to instill in them the importance of circumspection and an end to their ostentatious displays. I derive some satisfaction from the notion that perchance, I succeeded in instilling a modicum of fear in these young scamps, and their rustic father can disregard my sentiments. Yes, good people, even here in Massachusetts, we find ourselves in the company of the unsophisticated. To them, I say, may they be cast aside, for they are the scourge of society.

School avoidance: Students refusing to go to school a growing crisis post-COVID

AI generated image via Hotpot API

'School avoidant behavior, also called school refusal, is when a school-age child refuses to attend school or has difficulty being in school for the entire day. Several mental health experts told USA TODAY it has become a crisis that has gotten worse since the COVID-19 pandemic.' The only reason I was not one of these kids was out of extreme fear of authority (most of all, my parents), along with outright ignorance that I even had any option of opting out. Back in the ‘80s and early ‘90s - at least in my area - even the most rotten kids still did not dare cut classes on any sort of regular basis. One time, late in senior year, we took off in some kid’s car to eat lunch at a local pizza joint, and were relieved that we didn’t get caught. I may have snuck out of a pep rally or two, but that was about the extent that I would ever dare ‘play hooky.’ In retrospect, I should have just said ‘f**k it’ and not have cared. For all the good earning decent grades, dutifully following the rules, and dealing with my a**hole peers ultimately did me; I may have even turned out a more healthy person than the one I became. Still, I would not want to be a kid today for anything, and I do not blame these ones for pushing back against the hellscape they were born into. {USA Today 5/15}

If only the British had maintained control of the colonies. 4th of July #Murica 2022: Mass shooting at parade in Illinois, the Supreme Court continues its assault on sanity, Russia claims control of key Ukrainian province, and COVID rises again

Another night of idiots who can't hear us over the sound of them exercising their 'freedom.' Bombs going off everywhere, the dog was about to have a heart attack. Upon many years of experience, reflection, and logical examination, this is a really stupid country on so many levels. This is a country for Darwinian bullies and psychopaths. Sorry, just not feeling this whole #Murica thing anymore.

Lynn Sweet/Chicago Sun-Times/AP

Mass shooting at 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois - Turn out the lights and end this s**t show already. (AP 7/04)

Lowlife scum identified as the person of interest in the Highland Park shooting ‘left a long trail of tributes to mass shootings and public killings on social media platforms’ - A real winner here. Performed as a white-boy rapper under the alias ‘Awake,’ and is the son of a failed mayoral candidate. (NBC News 7/04)

GOP gubernatorial candidate in Illinois, not even hours after the mass shooting that has devastated his state and the nation: Let’s move on and celebrate - How do we ever reconcile with people of this mindset, which represents a good percentage of the country? We’re f**ked. Sorry, folks, we’re f**ked. {And I am sorry, I know the Raw Story site loads like crap and slows down any device one is using, I'm just too pissed to even try to find a better source at the moment. F**king bulls**t to all Hades.} (Raw Story 7/04)

Going back to Nixon’s ‘Southern Strategy,’ and accelerating greatly during Barack Obama’s presidency and the rise of Donald Trump, Republicans have appealed to confirmation biases to hoodwink millions of (mostly white, ‘working-class’) Americans into supporting their nation-killing, undemocratic policies. The Republican Party must now die; not in the way innocent victims of mass gun violence have, because we know that isn’t happening and the rest of us are not barbarians. No, because their individual consciences finally catch up with them. But, who are we kidding? They are going to sweep the mid-terms and win the presidency in 2024. We all know it, we all know most of our fellow citizens are awful people who would laugh while watching their neighbors being dragged off to death camps. We know the Democratic Party must really suck to have allowed things to progress to this dire stage, where attending a 4th of July parade - or, literally, any event or any place at all, even being in one’s own home - means risks being shot to death, and nobody is allowed to complain about it because ‘freedom.’

Very funny that #Cult45 proclaims to be so anti-socialist, yet they worship Trump with the same fervor as if he were Joseph Stalin, demanding the same of the rest of us. And they worship the United States itself as if it were the very (perverted) ideal the Soviet Union spent 70 years trying to impose upon its citizens. So, screw ‘em, because they’ve ruined the idea of patriotism in America. The flag has become nothing more than a fashion statement, courtesy of those jackasses who never stop bellowing about their ostensible love of country while s**ting on everything it is supposed to stand for. The Founding Fathers would never have fought had they known it would come to this (and, yes, I asked them.) #Murica

‘What accounts for the blithe dismissal of potentially cataclysmic threats?’ Sen. Mitt Romney calls out the American people for being in denial about the pathetic state of the republic - Says a return to Trump ‘would feed the sickness, probably rendering it incurable.’ Agreed, but he and the few remaining sane Republicans need to disavow themselves of any illusion that the GOP can be saved - or is worth saving - and declare themselves independents. Supreme Court issues ruling limiting the EPA’s authority to regulate climate standards at power plants - For the longest time, I didn’t buy into climate change. Until, as with a lot of crap I used to believe, the reality couldn’t be denied any longer. Even now it’s not my area of expertise. Considering that this court is apparently trying to destroy the nation as it currently stands, what would be a few more carbon emissions into the environment? Once the right of women to drive is rescinded and two-thirds of the population have either been eliminated or have fled the country, there will be fewer cars on the road. Christofascists and their allies tend to hate cities, so destroying those should also help clean the air. Hmmm, perhaps the extreme right are onto something after all, and are not the anti-environmentalists they’re often mistaken for. Just as they defend freedom of speech by constantly belittling and threatening anyone with differing points of view. Just as how they support science by rejecting vaccines and facemasks in the middle of the largest global pandemic in over a century. Really, not too surprising that Fascists would love Mother Earth, in their own unique way. Hitler was quite the environmentalist by the standards of his time. (John Sutter, CNN 6/30)

USC and UCLA to the Big Ten? - What the f**k!? Geographically this is stupid, obviously, but at the highest levels of college sports geography is simply no longer a concern. No conspiracy theories needed: The SEC, Big Ten, and their broadcast partners (chiefly, ESPN) are boldly and deliberately consolidating their power and ensuring no other schools or conferences will ever again be competitive with them, on the field and off. The few remaining major powers outside those two conferences will be absorbed within the next few years, and we’ll never see even an ACC, Big 12, or Pac 12 school win another national championship.  Or if they do, it’ll be at a new level between FBS and FCS, as those three conferences and the five current mid-majors will be entirely frozen out of FBS (now only consisting of the SEC and Big Ten) and compelled to form their own, secondary division. We may even see FBS split into three, with ACC/Big 12/Pac 12 being the second division, and the current mid-majors being third division. FCS would now be Division IV, the current Division II becomes Division V, and the current Division III will become Division VI. All of this is so bloody ridiculous, and it’s part of what is slowly killing my interest in this sport. Even the pretense of these players being student-athletes is disappearing, (FanNation 6/30)

Russia’s mightiest warship is sunk, while more of their atrocities in Ukraine are unearthed. Also, a rant on Elon Musk possibly buying Twitter, COVID on the rise again, baby formula becomes scarce in #Murica, and more

Reuters

Russia has been forced to admit the battleship Moskva was sunk in the Black Sea by Ukrainian missiles - A massive victory for Ukraine, another severe setback for the invaders. Moskva was not just another warship, it was the flagship of the Russian fleet. (The Guardian 4/14)

Genocidal fervor against Ukrainians has overtaken the Russian media, and increasingly the war of aggression is being portrayed as a war for Russia’s survival - Few in Russia appear to be rejecting Putin, as they must do. Instead, most have either chosen silence, or have embraced their leader’s bloodlust. (Washington Post 4/13)

‘The Russian soldiers forced more than 300 villagers into a school basement. Then, during weeks of stress and deprivation, some began to die.’ (AP 4/13)

Ukrainians arrive at the Mexico-U.S. border by the thousands, awaiting entry into the U.S. on humanitarian grounds - Thankfully, many volunteers are on hand to help. (NPR 4/13)

‘A Russian State Duma legislator and two aides have been charged in the United States with conspiring to violate U.S. sanctions over an alleged international foreign influence and disinformation network to advance Russian interests.’ (Radio Free Europe 4/14)

FDA

‘The COVID-19 positivity rate in Massachusetts is now up to 3.42 percent as cases start to rise again’ - Two years ago, we were all alarmed with any increase in numbers. Now we’re ‘living with COVID,’ and living in a colder, darker world (and it wasn’t very nice beforehand.) These waves are going to continue to come and go, but I guess since #Murica is ‘done with COVID,’ it doesn’t matter how many die or become sick and, oftentimes, suffer long-term effects. (CBS Boston 4/13)

Reuters

Billionaire Elon Musk makes a bid to buy controlling interest in Twitter - No, I’m not likely to leave Twitter if this guy takes over, nor have I closely followed any of his exploits over the years. I will say that I am skeptical and suspicious of any and all ‘free speech’ absolutists. ‘Free speech’ to these people is always license to denigrate others and spread blatant disinformation and propaganda without consequence. In the wake of the Trump presidency, COVID, and now all the disinformation concerning the war in Ukraine, we cannot afford to tolerate that kind of ‘free speech’ any longer. It is also an absolute truism - across the board - that people do not want to hear others’ opinions, they only want to hear their opinions coming out of others’ mouths. Left or right, I’m having a hard time thinking of a single ‘free speech’ crusader who does not use ‘free speech’ as a means of controlling, intimidating, and silencing their opposition. In other words, all those who say ‘I’ll defend to the death your right to say it’ are full of s**t. (Independent.ie 4/14)

The clearest sign yet that Trump is running in 2024. The cowardly GOP withdraws from the ‘biased’ Commission on Presidential Debates - A cowardly move, but I’d gladly sacrifice presidential debates at this point. If we were a serious country with serious political parties, we’d be fixing our electoral process. Starting with greatly reducing the length of the campaign season. In every other first-world country, their presidential election cycles last for weeks, maybe a couple months at most; not the epic, drawn-out soap opera we have in #Murica. (Charles P. Pierce 4/14)

‘A red fox responsible for biting at least nine people on Capitol Hill tested positive for rabies.’ -  Where was this creature on January 6, 2021? But what am I saying, of course the mob on hand that day were already rabid. (Web MD 4/07)

CBS News

U.S. baby formula shortage strains families, forces stores to ration - A recent massive formula recall (due to causing bacterial infections in some infants) exacerbates existing supply chain problems, and now mothers are having a more difficult time feeding their babies. Can we do anything competently or correctly in this country anymore? It feels like everything all around us is broken. (Washington Post 4/13)

President Biden announces plan to combat the Omicron variant, but experts warn that only more restrictive measures unacceptable to the belligerent American public could successfully contain the spread

Samuel Corum/Getty Images

It’s going to be a long, cold winter, and many will fall ill and some will die. Millions have decided that their individual ‘freedumb’ is more important than stopping the spread of this deadly plague. Lo and behold, when the Omicron variant wipes out potentially hundreds of thousands of Americans, those same people – and eager mainstream media outlets – will point the finger of blame at President Biden and other leaders. Anti-vaxxers will never take responsibility for their choices. The New York Times -

Even as President Biden on Tuesday outlined new plans for battling the highly contagious Omicron variant, public health experts warned that the measures would not be sufficient to prevent a grim rise in infections and hospitalizations over the next few weeks.

The administration’s strategy includes doubling down on vaccination campaigns and propping up hospitals as they confront a large influx of patients. Federal officials will direct resources, including Army doctors, to support health care systems and distribute rapid tests to Americans.

But Mr. Biden explicitly ruled out lockdowns and other harsh measures of the kind put in place as the pandemic first unfolded in early 2020. In interviews on Tuesday, some scientists argued that the variant’s rapid spread requires more vigorous mitigation measures.

Some expressed frustration and alarm about what they described as a timid public health response, and bemoaned the apparent lack of will among politicians and society at large for more aggressive steps. (Read more)

Massachusetts: Gov. Charlie Baker says the Commonwealth has been working with other states to create QR code vaccine passport

Meredith Nierman/WGBH News

Privacy and civil liberties advocates and the like are going to hate this, but it would make life easier for those who are vaccinated and would eliminate fraud, as some anti-vaxxers have been forging vaccination cards. Via WGBH -

"It's a universal standard and we've been working with a bunch of other states, there's probably 15 or 20 of them, to try to create a single QR code that can be used for all sorts of things where people may choose to require a vaccine," Baker said of the passport program.

Baker showed hosts Margery Eagan and Jim Braude his code while in the GBH’s studios in Brighton.

"It's my proof that I've been vaccinated," he said.

Last week, new Boston Mayor Michelle Wu hinted that the city may implement a vaccine mandate for indoor recreation areas.

Baker defended the availability of COVID booster shots in the state, saying Massachusetts is providing around 55,000 total vaccination shots per day, including boosters, and has administered around 1 million booster shots. Baker compared that figure to the 80,000 doses the state was outputting last spring at the height of the vaccination push with the help of mass vaccination centers. (Read more)

Ferocious nor'easter slams Massachusetts and surrounding states

Fallen tree in New Bedford, MA. Photo: Peter Pereira

A considerable storm among the many I’ve seen in my days. A lot of people on the South Shore may not have power until after the weekend, and some are in shelters tonight. They’ll pull through, but prayers for them. Via WFXT -

BOSTON — Thousands of Massachusetts residents woke up without power Wednesday morning as a powerful nor’easter thrashes New England with heavy rain and hurricane-force gusts.

Be extra cautious on the roads as driving conditions can be treacherous during these types of storms. Damage is being reported across the state.

The South Shore was crushed leaving many towns with no power at all.

“It’s just howling wind, houses were shaking, my house was shaking,” said Tom Hence of his Cohasset home.

Cohasset Police Chief Bill Quigley said his officers were inundated with calls. “We’ve gotten used to these fizzling out, but this is not the case. I’ve been here for 30 years and this is the worst I’ve seen,” Chief Quigley said.

In Cohassett, police say a Commuter Rail train hit a fallen tree on the Green Bush line. Police cleared the broken tree. The MBTA said they had to clear about 50 trees from several commuter rail lines.

Boats were also a casualty of the nor’easter. The damage was everywhere, making getting around a chore. Even the press building at one of the athletic fields in Cohassett was taken out. (Read more)

Do Christians need to divorce themselves from politics?

I am a lousy example of a Christian, but a Christian all the same. Without question, politics have corrupted American Christianity. Most loudly and prominently on the right, and their having replaced Jesus with a sleazy New York City real estate developer as their savior. Then there are the churches flocking to the other extreme, and embracing the ‘woke’ agenda. Here in the Boston area, we don’t have very much in the way of the right-wing Christian activity that is so prevalent in much of this country. Well, the Catholic Church, of course, but they’re an entirely different breed than the evangelical Southerners and Midwesterners. And as heavily Catholic as this region is, most lay Catholics are not at all observant, aside from a special occasion, perhaps. There are plenty of Protestant churches, though, and seemingly all of them will have the rainbow flag displayed in front. The church I was born into - the Episcopalians – is exceedingly liberal today. Which is, in of itself, all fine and good; nobody is being forced to attend any of these places, after all, and the LGBTQ community should have a place to belong and practice their faith. But then, there doesn’t seem to be much emphasis on Jesus in these churches, either. In the years I was working the 12-step circuit, I regularly was in a lot of these places, and got something of a feel for what’s going on there. It’s not your grandmother’s old-time religion, that’s for certain. But the bigger question I pose now to anyone reading this: Should the church withdraw from the political scene? Prior to the 1970s, we did not see too much in the way of church involvement in politics. This only really began to change with the rise of the Moral Majority around the time of Reagan’s election. Have things really improved as a result of Christians becoming political creatures? Or just the opposite? Post-Trump, it would very much appear to be the latter, but I digress ...

Infamous Biogen conference could have led to up to 300,000 COVID cases worldwide

Up to 300,000 COVID cases worldwide are estimated to have been connected with the infamous Biogen conference that took place in Boston this past February. Also estimated to have led to 1.6% of COVID cases in the United States. Perhaps it's just not a good idea to ever allow too many people to gather in one place at one time. Perhaps there are just too many people, period. A lot of things that were taken for granted about our world pre-pandemic need to be reconsidered. CBS Boston - Study shows Biogen conference could be connected to as many as 300,000 COVID cases
