The cathedral of artificial minds

A spectacular futuristic editorial illustration depicts a colossal artificial-intelligence network housed within a cathedral-like technological complex suspended above the clouds. At its centre, a luminous glass enclosure contains an enormous brain-shaped web of branching circuitry, blazing with countless electrical connections. Streams of autonomous digital agents escape the structure and race across space towards Earth, linking cities, aircraft, satellites and communications infrastructure into an increasingly dense global web. Three female technicians watch anxiously from a control station as the system expands beyond their apparent command. Surveillance cameras, transparent screens and machinery crowd the complex, while the illuminated planet dominates the distance, creating an unsettling vision of advanced AI proliferating across the internet faster than its human creators can contain it.

When industry leaders themselves are warning that their own creations could bring about a catastrophe of unprecedented scale, we probably ought to take heed:

FTA: LOS ANGELES (AP) — New warnings from within the artificial intelligence industry have revived a long-running debate over whether advanced AI could escape human control and ultimately threaten humanity’s survival, and whether the companies developing the technology are doing enough to prevent such a scenario.

The CEO of Anthropic, the San Francisco company behind Claude, said he thought the industry needed to reduce the speed of its work, cautioning Saturday that a swarm of AI agents might be able to take over the internet in six months to a year unless companies devoted more time to putting safeguards in place.

Dario Amodei outlined a plan for companies like his and governments around the world to ensure that increasingly capable AI models remain aligned with the commands and values of responsible people days after two former Anthropic safety researchers publicly aired concerns that the existential threats AI might pose to humanity were receiving too little attention.

The supermarket panopticon

A contemporary editorial illustration depicts a solitary young woman standing barefoot in the centre of an immense, eerily deserted supermarket aisle. She wears a luminous ivory slip dress beneath a dark coat trailing across the polished floor, while tears stream down her face as she gazes upwards with an anxious, overwhelmed expression. Endless shelves of brightly coloured, anonymous products converge behind her beneath harsh fluorescent lighting. Glowing electronic shelf labels line both sides, surveillance cameras watch from overhead, and abandoned trolleys and baskets punctuate the aisle. The mirror-like floor repeatedly reflects fragments of the woman’s distressed face, intensifying the atmosphere of isolation, surveillance and psychological unease.

AFL-CIO: electronic shelf labeling to cut grocery jobs, raise prices, even violate shoppers' privacy and basic liberties. {The Guardian 9 September}

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/sep/09/electronic-shelf-labels-grocery

Shady, and after a fashion Orwellian. As with the proliferation of data centres, there hath arisen some pushback in certain quarters; yet, upon the whole, we have rushed headlong towards a technological hellscape for which human beings remain by nature grievously ill-equipped, and I regard this development as a significant escalation of that broader and ever more pervasive tendency. —

FTA: The universal adoption of electronic shelf labels in grocery stores across the US could cost tens of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in lost wages while further driving up grocery costs, according to a report released on Tuesday.

An analysis by the AFL-CIO Tech Institute of the label manufacturers’ own marketing materials found the universal adoption of electronic shelf labels, which are marketed to retailers as a cost-cutting measure, could cost workers between $1.6bn and $6.9bn in lost wages annually and affect between 44,223 and 191,633 jobs.

The policy brief – Priced Out, Pushed Out: Electronic Shelf Labels Raise Prices and Shrink Paychecks – calls for a ban on electronic labels to protect consumers and workers.

Manufacturers have hailed the labels as a way to collect huge amounts of personal data from customers, increase profits and cut labor costs.

The report argues that electronic shelf labels use the same pricing systems that allow dynamic pricing – price changes such as increasing allergy medication prices when pollen counts are high – to surveillance pricing, changing prices based on personal data.

These technologies are being implemented across the US retail industry at a time when food prices have surpassed inflation and wage gains, increasing 33% over the past seven years.

“Through our analysis, we found that the implementation of electronic shelf labels are likely going to drive prices even higher. The reason being that these labels are connected to the same algorithmic pricing software that online retailers are already using,” said Sunny Glottmann, policy and programs managers at the AFL-CIO Tech Institute and co-author of the report.

“Electronic shelf labels create the infrastructure that would make rapid algorithmic price changes easier to implement at scale, and this raises concerns for consumers that are already struggling with grocery costs.”

The report comes as several states have begun introducing legislation to ban surveillance pricing and electronic shelf labels. In April, Maryland became the first state in the US to ban surveillance pricing. Connecticut signed a ban into law in June and New Jersey signed a ban into law in July.

The slow unmaking of tomorrow

A richly detailed allegorical illustration depicts a despondent young woman sitting upon a battered teacher’s desk in a deteriorating American classroom. Wearing a white camisole, short navy skirt, stockings and red heels, she holds an open book while resting her head wearily in one hand. Towering stacks of books lean precariously beside her as loose papers swirl through the room. An antique calculating machine, abacus, globe and geometric blocks evoke traditional learning, while glowing smartphones lie conspicuously upon neglected pupil desks. Through the window, an American flag hangs beside a distant state capitol beneath a fiery sunset, suggesting an education system caught between intellectual decline, technological distraction and institutional failure.

Though not the only country to see a decline, reading scores on PISA tests for US students have fallen headlong in this decade. {NYT 8 September}

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/08/us/us-reading-test-scores-pisa.html?unlocked_article_code=1._lA.VbNO.EdEx486auG65&smid=url-share

The morrow is most bleak; abandon ye all hope —

FTA: The reading scores of American 15-year-olds have fallen sharply since 2022 and are near their lowest point in 25 years, according to the results of a key global exam released on Tuesday.

U.S. math scores are also among the lowest since the test began in 2000, even as students have held their ground in science.

By every measure, American students are being outperformed by students in Singapore and parts of China who had top scores on the Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, taken by 15-year-olds around the world.

It is the latest warning sign for an American education system that has seen test scores fall over the last decade, starting before the pandemic.

A telling tidbit, buried somewhat deeper within the NYT article —

Researchers urged some caution when interpreting the U.S. results. The U.S. sample included about 4,600 students from 144 schools, but response rates fell short of the PISA’s targets. The Trump administration last year slashed staffing at the federal agency responsible for administering the PISA in the United States, as part of its plan to shrink the Department of Education.

Thus, to the fullest extent within its power, this unholy rΓ©gime shall labour assiduously to obscure how grievously American children are falling behind their counterparts elsewhere, most particularly in Southeast Asia. Make the problem vanish by pretending that it doth not exist. Because such a stratagem hath always worked, at all times and in all places… yeah?

What y’all voted for, #Murica. Well done.

Lost in the feed

A feverish political illustration depicts Donald Trump standing in an ornate Oval Office, absorbed in a smartphone while a torrent of glowing digital images swirls chaotically around him. The floating screens portray exaggerated fantasies of Trump as golfer, wrestler, statesman, conqueror and heroic figure, alongside rockets, warships, eagles and other spectacles of power. Behind the desk, an astronaut appears to stride across the Moon beside an American flag, while a fractured map of the United States hangs nearby. George Washington sits at left with his head in his hand, surveying the disorder in apparent despair. The cluttered desk and cascading imagery evoke a presidency consumed by social-media fantasy while the responsibilities of government lie neglected.

Just another day in Trumpistan: US president declares American ownership of the moon, vows to rechristen the state of New Mexico. {Huffington Post 7 September}

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-truth-social_n_6a9e3a64e4b00f094b1a67ea

FTA: Between 9:10 a.m. and 10:35 p.m., the president fired off more than 60 messages, links, memes, rants, personal attacks, endorsements, boasts, and AI slop creations.

Clearly, Donald Trump is not a well man; yet the very nation that descended into collective panic when President Joe Biden endured a mild senior moment during a debate now simply cannot trouble itself to care all that much, as this president decomposes before our eyes. Whence finds this orange-sprayed circus clown the leisure to dally, incessantly, upon social media? Hath he not a job of some considerable weight to perform? To all appearances, nobody is running the store at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue — for all about us hastens headlong toward perdition. A mean-spirited dotard posts phantasmagorical videos of himself capering to ‘Y.M.C.A.’, heaps vilification upon such worthy men as Robert De Niro and the late Rep. John Dingell, repeatedly stabs our sister nation of Canada and other traditional allies squarely in the back, vows to rename an entire state on a whim, and the greater part of this dying realm either applauds the spectacle or merely shrugs it away. Meanwhile, we who never consented to this mountebank’s coronation are at once exhausted beyond all articulation and perpetually astounded — to be sure, exactly the design.

A further question presses: how doth Trump’s enfeebled mind even digest the ceaseless torrent of digital ephemera he both consumes and disseminates? He is all but brain dead at this pass. The sycophants about him feed him his daily pabulum of memes and assorted gaga, by day and by night. It seemeth their only real purpose is to keep this big baby amused. Anything to avoid having to govern in earnest: for he and they have proven, time out of mind, altogether incapable of it. All of this is happening on taxpayers’ dime, yet most tolerate or endorse it so long as they may continue to delude themselves into believing they are thereby ‘owning the libs’.

Ten years have this nightmare endured, and its blackest leaves remain yet unwritten. What y’all voted for, #Murica — and a certain gentleman seated in the Kremlin, together with every enemy of human liberty besides, do render y’all their most grateful thanks.

The machinery of compliance

A darkly surreal illustration depicts a vast, decaying institutional corridor transformed into an oppressive mechanical labyrinth. A pale, black-haired woman in a short white slip and black lace stockings presses herself against the cracked wall at left, warily observing several dog-like surveillance robots prowling the passage. Their battered metal bodies carry camera-like heads with glowing red lenses, while additional mechanical eyes protrude from the walls and ceiling. Tangled cables descend among dense pipes, fluorescent lights and endless filing cabinets, with turnstiles blocking the corridor farther ahead. Receding balconies, stairways and galleries make the architecture appear impossibly immense, reinforcing an atmosphere of bureaucratic surveillance, confinement and technological menace.

Sci-fi dystopia comes to life: ICE to deploy robot dogs, ostensibly only for operations deemed unsafe for human agents. {WCVB 29 August}

https://www.wcvb.com/article/ice-boston-dynamics-robot-dogs/73559827

Perhaps such once-futuristic technology is reasonable enough on the surface: if we are speaking of apprehending genuinely violent criminals, or deploying these robotic canines within search-and-rescue operations. But can we trust anything this regime puts forth? Should present trends prove any reliable indication, these shall, in due course, be weaponised against non-violent offenders, innocent civilians, and the wider public alike.

FTA: BOSTON — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is set to deploy a new tool in its mass deportation campaign: a fleet of "robot dogs" that were made in Massachusetts.

The Spot robots were created by Boston Dynamics and will be used in operations deemed unsafe for human agents, like hazardous gas detection, search and rescue, as well as suspicious package investigations.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Boston Dynamics said in part:

"Boston Dynamics sells to many government agencies and public safety organizations and the robots are used to keep people out of harm's way and aid first responders in assessing dangerous situations... any attempted weaponization of Boston Dynamics' robots is strictly prohibited."

ICE put in a $2 million order for the robots, but it's unclear when the agency plans to deploy them.

The technology is also used by the Secret Service.

When debt becomes destiny

A lavish allegorical illustration portrays economic instability through a fantastical financial marketplace. At centre, a blonde woman in a flowing ivory gown stands upon a cracked marble platform, gazing anxiously towards an enormous gauge whose needle rises steeply. Around her, elegantly dressed women weigh stacks of coins on golden scales and scrutinise financial documents. Behind them towers a colossal mountain of bonds, papers and currency, with loose sheets swirling beneath turbulent clouds. A suspended pan laden with coins, classical government architecture and a futuristic financial district reinforce themes of mounting debt, rising borrowing costs and systemic financial strain.

The former United States pays the highest bond yields in twenty-five years as national debt nears $40 trillion and deficits soar. {The Telegraph 14 August}

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/18f5ae5793fd4b3c

FTA: The US has paid the highest interest rate on newly issued bonds in a quarter of a century as the American national debt soars.

The treasury sold 30-year US government bonds at an interest rate of 5.216pc on Thursday, the highest borrowing cost seen in a debt auction since 2001.

It came hot on the heels of another auction on Wednesday, where 10-year US bonds were sold at an interest rate of 4.683pc, the highest since 2007 for Treasuries of that duration.

Washington is being forced to offer higher returns to investors as the US national debt pile nears $40tn (£29.6tn).

The US debt-to-GDP ratio stands at more than 121pc, and Washington now pays more to service its national debt each year than it spends on defence.

James Athey, a fund manager at Marlborough, said: “The US is running a record peacetime deficit while unemployment is low, and the economy is still growing at around trend.

“This is an incredibly worrying situation for a major economy to be in and strongly suggests that the economy isn’t as robust as many are making out. It also means that, should a recession occur, the deficit would blow out significantly, creating real challenges for government funding.

“This large deficit also means that the US government is having to raise a lot of funding each year, meaning more bond supply and further upward pressure on yields.”

Mr Athey also suggested that concerns about the credibility of the US Federal Reserve (Fed) were pushing up borrowing costs.

No safe harbour in the pipes

A surreal digital illustration portraying a devastated municipal water-treatment facility beneath a magnificent cosmic firmament, dominated by a vast, ringed planet and swirling nebulae. At its centre, a tearful, flaxen-haired woman, garbed in a flowing and tattered ivory gown, kneels amidst shattered electronics, corroding pipework and industrial ruin, raising a fractured, empty drinking glass towards the heavens in an attitude of desperate supplication. A weathered "Water Authority" signboard hangs precariously from a crumbling edifice, whilst luminous droplets descend from the sky above, reinforcing the underlying themes of thirst, vulnerability, and the fragility of critical water infrastructure.

Iran-linked hackers target US water systems across at least twelve states, exposing years of cybersecurity neglect {NYT 5 August}

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/05/us/politics/water-supply-warnings.html?unlocked_article_code=1.3FA.g6Dt.niWaXpE7xVzo&smid=url-share

The EPA under President Biden sought to institute more stringent cybersecurity provisions, and Republican officials in numerous states blocked it from happening. Now cyberattacks on America’s water infrastructure are on the rise, and Iranian-affiliated hackers are suspected to be the culprits. FTA:

In 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency under the Biden administration proposed creating stronger cybersecurity guidelines to better safeguard the nation’s water supply from hackers.

The steps were modest, but necessary, officials said at the time: Many municipalities lacked even basic protections, and the computers that monitor and adjust water quality, including chemical-treatment levels, were easy-to-find targets for a would-be intruder.

The E.P.A. rescinded the order, however, after Republican-led states and industry groups sued to block its enforcement. They argued that the E.P.A. lacked authority for the move and that smaller, underfunded utilities would struggle to adopt the new standards.

The episode is just one of several in recent years in which efforts to bolster the cyberdefenses of America’s water systems were blocked despite repeated attacks that highlighted vulnerabilities. Just a little more than a month after the E.P.A. proposal was killed, a small town in western Pennsylvania disclosed that a hacking group tied to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps briefly took control of equipment used to adjust water pressure.

Now federal and state officials are racing to address an alarming, widespread assault on the nation’s water supply that they believe is also probably the work of Iranian hackers.

Last week, at least seven states, including Minnesota and Michigan, reported incidents to the F.B.I., and in some cases the hacks — or the response to them — degraded water operations. The tally of states reporting possible attacks to the F.B.I. is now at least a dozen, according to people familiar with the investigation. The F.B.I. has not disclosed the states publicly, but some have come forward to confirm activity.

At least 100 municipalities have detected recent malicious hacking efforts related to their water systems, though some of those may be unrelated incidents, the people said. Some security experts said the number of vulnerable systems nationwide could be far higher.

What y’all voted for, #Murica. This is the price the former United States now pays for the mass belligerence and willful ignorance exhibited by the dominant white working class and the political party to which they have pledged their allegiance. These jerks will never take a look in the mirror; whatever calamity should arise, and under whatever administration it should occur, culpability shall invariably be assigned elsewhere. I am thoroughly sick of both this horrid state of affairs and those Americans who have brought it into being. A ‘national divorce’ grows more appealing with each passing day, for I do not want these individuals — and their orange s**tbag president — lording over the rest of us a moment longer. They are literally dismantling this country on all fronts, all the while brandishing the flag and styling themselves ‘patriots’. One way or the other, this must end.

The long winter of silence

A symbolic fantasy illustration of a red-haired woman standing barefoot in a dim, timeworn room, wrapped in a delicate translucent white shift as she gazes through a frost-covered window towards the snow-covered onion domes of a distant Russian city. Behind her hangs a stern military portrait, while scattered sealed letters burn upon a desk beside a black rotary telephone. Tangled red wires coil across the wooden floor towards a paper aeroplane and a raven perched on the windowsill, clutching a tiny padlock in its beak. Warm sunlight pours through the window, contrasting with the room’s oppressive atmosphere and evoking themes of secrecy, surveillance, isolation, and the fragile hope of freedom.

Hunting the architects of chaos

A refined glamour illustration in the style of a mid-century pin-up painting depicts a poised, heavily pregnant blonde woman seated comfortably at a modern computer workstation. She wears a fitted white dress beneath an open white jacket, one hand resting on a computer mouse while the other supports her chin in a thoughtful pose. Multiple large monitors display lines of computer code, network diagrams and world maps, suggesting cybersecurity or digital forensics work. Her legs are crossed and her expression is calm, focused and quietly confident. A keyboard, speakers, desktop computer and office chair complete the workspace, while a globe in the background reinforces the international context. Warm golden lighting and painterly brushwork create an elegant editorial atmosphere that blends classic glamour with contemporary technology.

‘Europol shuts down thousands of websites linked to global nihilist network’. {Brussels Times 24 July}

https://www.brusselstimes.com/brussels-2/2244268/europol-shuts-down-thousands-of-websites-linked-to-global-nihilist-network

Whilst the government of the former United States is preoccupied with military adventurism abroad and the glorification of President Trump at home, Europe is addressing genuine threats and taking meaningful action. FTA:

Europol has taken down around 4,340 websites containing violent and extremist material linked to the online network known as 'The Com', in a joint operation involving several EU member states, including Belgium.

The EU's law enforcement agency said the operation aims to dismantle the propaganda network and reduce the reach of its harmful online content.

According to Europol, 'The Com' is a loose network of online groups that promote a nihilistic and misanthropic worldview.

The groups recruit members through social media platforms and online gaming communities before encouraging them to commit acts including animal torture, violent assaults, self-harm and the production of child sexual abuse material.

Europol warned that the network primarily targets young people and operates not only on the dark web but also across mainstream social media platforms.

"Social media algorithms expose young people to extremist content, whether they actively seek it out or not. What initially appears harmless can quickly escalate into extreme violence and deeply traumatic material," the agency said.

Victims are often blackmailed into remaining in the groups, with perpetrators threatening to share intimate images or videos with family and friends.

Some of the groups also use far-right symbols and terminology to promote their ideology or provoke public outrage.

Over the past two years, Europol said 'The Com' has evolved into a major global threat, with minors increasingly becoming both victims and perpetrators of crime.

Among the faithful dead in the last refuge of civilisation

Literacy crisis: Americans today are outright refusing to read; gambling now more common than books in the former US. {Rose Horowitch, The Atlantic 8 July}

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/08/reading-crisis-postliterate-age/687618/?gift=9FZn7jkTomfZUUZKAohjmj-cCDVI01zjt7XQQzsljuM&utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share

A new Dark Ages is taking shape, and that is not hyperbole but probably an understatement. Consider this anecdote, FTA:

Adult-literacy scores have also dropped: Nearly 30 percent of American adults cannot paraphrase or make inferences from a multipage text. In 2017, that number was less than 20 percent.

That is a staggering decline in less than a decade. Nine years is not even a blip in the course of modern civilisation. The figure is so extraordinary that I can scarcely wrap my mind around it, so I shall not attempt to do so any further at the moment.

The scariest part of the decline in reading for pleasure is that it is being witnessed across all demographics. The youngest generations are the least inclined to read and the most tech-addled, as one might expect, but only an estimated 38 per cent of Americans read a novel last year. Is it any coincidence that this is occurring at the same time anti-intellectualism is running amok and a narcissistic clown has returned to the White House after failing spectacularly the first time around?

Decades of vapid popular culture, political gaslighting that convinced people to oppose their own interests, and immersion in technologies designed to fragment attention have combined to produce a society that no longer practises critical thinking. A kind of mass zombification is underway, and I want out of this timeline and away from everyone in it. It is not the sort of life I wish to live, nor the sort of society in which I wish to live. #Murica.

FTA: Reading books is a workout for the attention span. The more you read, the easier it is to read, and the more you’re rewarded with new understanding. Eventually the process is more pleasurable than it is challenging. But as with physical exercise, the converse is true as well: The less you read, the more difficult it is to read, and the rockier the path to acquiring knowledge.

Veterans of DOGE stationed at Trump's National Design Center installed visitor-tracking software on US government websites. {The Guardian 28 June}

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jun/28/government-website-visitor-tracking-surveillance-fears

The ‘Big Brother’ regime of Orwell’s 1984 would doubtless be impressed by the surveillance state that now exists throughout most of the world. The former United States is hardly alone in tracking its citizenry, but no other Western governments are run and staffed by Christian nationalist ideologues and other assorted lunatics — individuals openly hostile to institutional restraint, transparency, and dissent — and captained by an elderly, cartoonish megalomaniac who demands complete adoration and fealty from all. Hell, can it even be said that America remains part of the ‘Western’ world when we increasingly conduct our domestic and foreign affairs in a manner more readily associated with Russia or China?

No ambitious tyranny willingly tolerates unlimited scrutiny of itself whilst declining to scrutinise its own citizens. Surveillance, once established, doth not retreat of its own accord. Millions of us are going to face consequences for speaking out in the not too distant future, but not for anything will I ever give my seal of approval to this Satanic regime that invokes Christ, patriotism, and family even as it grossly undermines all of them.

Sir Winston Churchill on the reality of public opinion

A satirical digital portrait of Winston Churchill reimagined in the twenty-first century, his legendary bulldog scowl trained not upon the enemy but a glowing smartphone. The artist renders him with remarkable fidelity: the bowler hat, polka-dotted bow tie, and omnipresent cigar—all hallmarks of Churchillian defiance—are intact, yet their gravitas is comically undercut by the incongruity of modern technology. Behind him, the Union Jack looms in vivid hues of red, white, and blue, emblematic of the indomitable British spirit he once personified. The light catches the creases of his brow and the curl of smoke from his cigar, giving the scene both humour and gravitas. The composition suggests an allegory of the digital age—an icon of steadfast conviction confronted by the triviality and distraction of the contemporary world, frowning as though the fate of civilisation itself depended upon what he sees on the screen.
image generated via ChatGPT

“There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion,” stated Winston Churchill—a remark that lands with eerie foresight in the age of dictatorial algorithms and mass hysteria, wherein opinion is made a merchandised trade, and the mob a marketplace. One may well conceive the old war-dog beholding the endless scroll of social babble, and judging—after his wonted fashion and without the least strain of hyperbole—that our civilisation had clean parted company with its wits.

Born on 30 November 1874 amidst the rolling fields of West Oxfordshire, and sprung of an American mother of notable grace and an English father of noble blood yet scant forbearance, Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill embodied a species of Englishman now almost extinct. A lover of cigars, whisky, and the English language in equal measure, he stood as the living antithesis of his nemesis, the teetotal vegetarian tyrant across the Channel. Churchill’s vices were human; his virtues, monumental.

By any reckoning, the twentieth century’s most formidable statesman—a relic of another age even whilst he lived, and yet utterly needful to his own time. In an era that prized shallow cries above substance, he wielded words as others wield artillery; and when civilisation hung by a thread, it was his voice—gravelled, resolute, and adamant—that held the rampart fast.

In today’s absurd universe, one with many echoes of the atmosphere that led to the Second World War, Churchill’s spectre is more needed than ever. Yet I discern much of his iron resolve in Volodymyr Zelensky: a witness that greatness, however blemished, once walked amongst mortal men, and that valour, when once uttered aloud, may yet ring forth with truth.

Amazon collapses, dragging half the internet—and all reliant upon it—into paralysis: a mere fire drill for civilisation’s fall

A spectral tableau of digital desolation rendered in cinematic chiaroscuro. A young woman with pale hair and an expression of quiet detachment stands amid the ruins of a once-modern city, its skyline dominated by black monoliths branded Amazon and Google. She wears a powder-blue dress with a white Peter Pan collar, its innocence jarringly at odds with the dystopian scene. In one hand she clutches a small loaf of bread—a relic of survival—while in the other she gazes down at a smartphone, its cold light illuminating her downcast face. Around her, the remnants of a fallen civilisation—darkened shopfronts, lifeless screens, tangled cables—form a graveyard of consumer technology. Overhead, storm clouds writhe with veins of lightning, their electric fury mirrored by the web of wires that ensnare the towers. The image reads as an elegy for the human spirit—adrift, obedient, and alone in the shadow of its own creations.

{Mashable 20 October} ‘AWS outage update: What happened today and why’

Perhaps the body politic hath been something more than rash in permitting a slender coterie of vast corporations to hold dominion over near the whole compass of human commerce—and to consign it all to ‘the cloud’. If an entire infrastructure collapses at the faintest tremor, of what practical worth is that infrastructure? And why does no redundancy—of any worth, at least—exist to sustain it? From the internet to the power grid, from energy production to the extraction of the earth’s finite resources, few of us truly grasp the fragility of our modern age, or how fearfully we have enthralled ourselves to the artificers of Silicon Valley. Verily, we are become their vassals—SLAVES at the mercy of our technological overlords.

These incessant glitches fray my nerves and leave me in a state of abject vexation—and of late, there hath been no paucity of such afflictions in my own affairs. I shall not recount the full litany of woes, yet it suffices to note that my grocery delivery—through Amazon Fresh—was abruptly cancelled this very morning amid their latest systemic collapse. Then, in attempting to activate a new debit card with a different institution—yet one of the countless enterprises now beholden to Amazon Web Services, alongside such disparate entities as McDonald’s, Venmo, and innumerable others encompassing nearly every conceivable sphere—I found myself stymied by yet another glitch, and obliged once more to telephone some remote call centre in India to have the matter rectified.

It is without end—until, at last, the entire fabric of society doth crumble utterly, and whatever remnant of humanity survives is cast back into the dim estate of the cave-dweller. This technological grotesquerie hath insinuated itself into the sinews of daily existence, sowing silent chaos in the lives of billions. And this most recent outage—still not wholly resolved as I write—is but a fire drill, the ominous prelude to a coming conflagration that shall devour the whole edifice.

Do I, then, harbour hope for that collapse? I cannot with certainty avouch it. For I was an unwanted soul upon this planet long before the rise of the tech barons in the 2000s and 2010s; unwanted I remain beneath their cold dominion; and it shall matter little whether I be wanted once they—and the brittle edifice of their devising—have dragged the sum of civilisation into the abyss. For I shall not endure to behold the final ruin. Then again, judging by the precipitous haste of our present decay, that reckoning may well descend upon us before next Thursday—and I may not be so fortunate as to miss the ensuing ghastly revels. Such would be my luck. —Arthur Newhook, 20 October 2025.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE ALGORITHM

image generated via Google Gemini

Even those among thee who command the greatest engagement across social media are, in truth, seen and valued by scarcely five per cent of thy followers. If that! So know this: the whole enterprise—social media, the Internet, the infernal little devices to which we have shackled our lives—was a monumental mistake. Even if a few scattered blessings have arisen from it, in the grand reckoning it has proved a calamity for humankind. Over the span of thirty years, technology has inflicted grievous psychic harm upon me; I see that more and more clearly now. This wicked little genie will not return to her bottle, yet every life is the poorer for her escape.

I speak without exaggeration when I say I feel as though I inhabit a universe of the living dead. I shall not be dragged, kicking and screaming, into accepting this deranged nonsense as some ‘new normal’, for it is nothing of the sort. I refuse to feign happiness in a world that never wanted me to begin with. And as for Jesus—if He is indeed coming—then let Him come swiftly and lay waste to all of this. And if tribulation must precede redemption, then let those already exhausted of will and spirit be permitted to depart before the final horrors begin. I did not start any of this. So, for God’s sake—let me be.—Arthur Newhook, 7 October 2025.

{alternate text for the above image} In a desolate digital wasteland beneath a tempestuous sky, a spectral woman stands alone, cloaked in flowing, monastic robes that billow in the cold wind. Her pale face is upturned toward a fractured heaven streaked with falling satellites and flaming debris, her expression one of solemn revelation. Around her feet lies a vast, ashen expanse of discarded smartphones and shattered screens—an ocean of dead technology still flickering faintly with the ghostly glow of social media icons. The landscape stretches to infinity, symbolising the graveyard of a civilisation consumed by its own inventions. Crimson trails burn through the clouds like apocalyptic omens, while she, the last prophet or mourner of the digital age, stands at the centre of the storm—at once priestess and survivor, elegist and avenger of the fallen world.

US Supreme Court appears keen to restrict online porn. Foolish theocratic crusaders dominate, and civilisation's future is grim

{Vox 15 January} The Supreme Court seems eager to curb First Amendment protections for porn

To one degree or another, the individual jurists on the theocratic US Supreme Court appear keen to restrict adults’ access to online pornography—a right mess brought about by tiresome moral busybodies on the left pushing their social agenda rather too vigorously, which has rather predictably catalysed a reactionary movement culminating in millions embracing the sort of far right, antisemitic rot that those of my age rather naively thought had been permanently vanquished with the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Now, the moral crusaders of the right—who vastly outnumber their ‘progressive’ counterparts, are dreadfully well-embedded in the local/state governments and among military and law enforcement, and whose capacity for armed force is demonstrably superior—are pursuing an absolutist agenda. All vestiges of measured discourse and temperance appear irretrievably forfeit for at least the next quarter-century. The mechanism by which future generations might recover these essential qualities—to put this particular Humpty Dumpty back together again— is a total mystery to me. My gut says future generations will dwell in caves like savages, having quite forgotten how to work a can opener, let alone possessing the knowledge and wherewithall to rebuild anything resembling civilisation. - Arthur Newhook, 15 January 2025.

A plea directed at the overlords of social media to abolish the 'laugh' emoji, alongside an exhortation for adults to cease using emojis entirely—indeed, to abandon behaviour reminiscent of schoolyard bullies in its entirety

Allow me to say this to one and all: if I had my way, every one of the social media platforms—starting with blasted Facebook—would chuck out that damned 'laugh' emoji. It is nothing but a tool for sneering at people, tearing them down, and stripping away their humanity. And do not consider for a second that Zuckerberg, Elon, and the rest of that wretched lot know not what they are doing. Of course they know—they’re the masters of pandemonium, the very architects of destruction.

Social media users? Do not get me started. Most of them are lemmings, gleefully marching to their doom, following these tech overlords straight into the flaming pit. This lunacy must cease forthwith, before we have got rivers of blood in the streets—mark my words, that is precisely where we are headed if this carries on.

Another thing—are you not supposed to be grown adults? Bloody adults! So, for heaven's sake, STOP USING EMOJI! Yes, I mean every damned word of it. Laughing at people—real people—who have lost everything to fires, floods, wars, or whatever else the world throws at them? What's wrong with you? Were you not taught as a child that kicking someone when they're down is the lowest of the low? Judging by what I am seeing, we've got precious few proper grown-ups left these days.

If you are one of those smirking sods indulging in this vile nonsense, let me spell it out for you: there is something rotten in your head and black in your heart. Huge swathes of society are beyond saving now, and this is exactly what a crumbling civilisation looks like.

So do us all a favour: grow up—properly this time—and, more importantly, find a shred of humanity in that shrivelled excuse for a soul of yours.

‘Countless People Will Be Put in Definitive Danger’. Lord Elon’s latest move—essentially banning the block feature on X—has outraged many

Lucy Nicholson/Reuters

X slammed for allowing blocked users to see posts anyway. {The Wrap 16 October}

Though technically speculative, I firmly believe this is a deliberate tactic to aid dangerous, psychotic MAGA extremists in targeting anyone who doesn’t stand with Trump after Election Day, as the inevitable societal unrest unfolds. The far-right in the United States today makes no secret of its anticipation and desire for civil war, declaring daily that only they actually qualify as ‘Americans’. They speak of a ‘real America’ (#Murica), in stark contrast to the urban and metropolitan areas that form the backbone of the Democratic Party. The rest of us are ‘Americans’ with an asterisk, and #Cult45 is eager for a culling. Civil war is on the horizon, and Elon Musk—more than even Trump—is uniquely positioned to help ignite it. He is an international criminal, deserving the harshest punishments imaginable for his ongoing crimes against humanity, and I believe there is at least a possibility that Elon Musk may be the Antichrist (or, if he isn’t THE Antichrist, he will still play the part).

Newspeak emerges from the pages of '1984' and enters the reality of the 21st century: indeed, Orwell was not merely a writer of fiction, but a prophet

Shepard Fairley/Penguins Books Limited

Purely anecdotal, and examples I will not proffer, but doth mine eyes alone notice that, of late, people's grammar and language skills seem to be deteriorating further, and a more rapid trajectory? Should we not recall '1984' and how the proles were gradually groomed to converse in Newspeak, a simplified version of English crafted to quell critical thinking? '1984' doth swiftly approach as veritable truth. Be alarmed; the degradation of our mother tongue is not something to dismiss lightly.
