The two-dollar beef mirage

A richly rendered pin-up-style illustration depicts a glamorous blonde farm woman standing amid grazing cattle beneath turbulent storm clouds and golden evening light. Wearing a knotted red-and-white gingham blouse, abbreviated denim shorts, sheer stockings and brown cowboy boots, she gestures towards an old-fashioned balance scale upon a rough wooden counter. One pan bears a paper-wrapped parcel beside exposed ground beef, while the other overflows with coins and jewellery, symbolising its formidable cost. A weathered red barn and silo dominate the pastoral background, reinforcing the ironic contrast between agricultural abundance and expensive beef.

GOP congressman, either grievously misinformed or gaslighting the public, asserts that ground beef is less than $2.00 a pound. {Huffington Post 16 September}

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/general/ar-AA2cnrRE

Actually closer to $7.00, and it hath been well-nigh a quarter of a century since the national average hovered anywhere near $2.00; yet never suffer mere facts to intrude upon a pleasing narrative.

FTA: Rep. Tom Emmer needs to tell the rest of us where he gets his groceries.

The Minnesota Republican appeared Wednesday morning on Fox Business and declared that beef prices had dropped to a level that may have shocked some viewers.

“We still have work to do, there’s no question,” Emmer said, downplaying the recent spike in inflation. “But eggs are at pre-pandemic prices. Beef is at less than $2 a pound for ground beef.”

In reality, the price of ground beef has shot up to nearly $7 a pound and shows no signs of retreating. Prices have risen steadily since the pandemic, with recent increases driven in large part by a historically small domestic cattle herd.

Despite Emmer’s rosy take on the situation, it’s been roughly 23 years since ground beef cost less than $2 per pound on average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

HuffPost reached out to Emmer’s office to see if he misspoke, and if not, whether he would share the name of his ground beef supplier. A spokesperson did not immediately respond Wednesday.

Drought’s harvest

A macabre editorial illustration depicts a dark-haired woman balancing barefoot upon a chair as enormous mosquitoes swarm around her in a parched, desolate landscape. Wearing a light summer dress, she raises an insect repellent aerosol while recoiling anxiously from the approaching insects. Stagnant pools and an ornate fountain provide breeding grounds, while crows and wading birds gather beneath twisted, leafless trees. A grotesque sun overlooks the scene as countless mosquitoes fill the dusty sky, transforming an ordinary summer nuisance into an ominous allegory of mosquito-borne disease and the expanding threat of West Nile virus.

West Nile virus surges in #Murica; drought concentrates mosquitoes around shrinking pools of water, raising risk of transmission. {The Independent 18 August}

Counter-intuitive though it may seem, drought increases transmission by concentrating mosquitoes and birds around ever-shrinking water sources.

FTA: The majority of cases occur in the summer, when warm and west conditions are at their peak.

While mosquitoes thrive in these conditions, experts say climate change-driven drought in Arizona and across the West has actually helped the disease spread.

Drought means that mosquitoes breed around smaller bodies of water, giving more opportunity for the virus to spread between them.

“Drought conditions can paradoxically increase West Nile virus transmission because it concentrates mosquitoes and birds (West Nile virus is a bird virus, first) around shrinking water sources, increasing transmission risk,” Matthew Aliota, a professor at the University of Minnesota, who specializes in these kinds of viruses, previously told The Independent.

No safe harbour in the pipes

A surreal digital illustration portraying a devastated municipal water-treatment facility beneath a magnificent cosmic firmament, dominated by a vast, ringed planet and swirling nebulae. At its centre, a tearful, flaxen-haired woman, garbed in a flowing and tattered ivory gown, kneels amidst shattered electronics, corroding pipework and industrial ruin, raising a fractured, empty drinking glass towards the heavens in an attitude of desperate supplication. A weathered "Water Authority" signboard hangs precariously from a crumbling edifice, whilst luminous droplets descend from the sky above, reinforcing the underlying themes of thirst, vulnerability, and the fragility of critical water infrastructure.

Iran-linked hackers target US water systems across at least twelve states, exposing years of cybersecurity neglect {NYT 5 August}

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/05/us/politics/water-supply-warnings.html?unlocked_article_code=1.3FA.g6Dt.niWaXpE7xVzo&smid=url-share

The EPA under President Biden sought to institute more stringent cybersecurity provisions, and Republican officials in numerous states blocked it from happening. Now cyberattacks on America’s water infrastructure are on the rise, and Iranian-affiliated hackers are suspected to be the culprits. FTA:

In 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency under the Biden administration proposed creating stronger cybersecurity guidelines to better safeguard the nation’s water supply from hackers.

The steps were modest, but necessary, officials said at the time: Many municipalities lacked even basic protections, and the computers that monitor and adjust water quality, including chemical-treatment levels, were easy-to-find targets for a would-be intruder.

The E.P.A. rescinded the order, however, after Republican-led states and industry groups sued to block its enforcement. They argued that the E.P.A. lacked authority for the move and that smaller, underfunded utilities would struggle to adopt the new standards.

The episode is just one of several in recent years in which efforts to bolster the cyberdefenses of America’s water systems were blocked despite repeated attacks that highlighted vulnerabilities. Just a little more than a month after the E.P.A. proposal was killed, a small town in western Pennsylvania disclosed that a hacking group tied to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps briefly took control of equipment used to adjust water pressure.

Now federal and state officials are racing to address an alarming, widespread assault on the nation’s water supply that they believe is also probably the work of Iranian hackers.

Last week, at least seven states, including Minnesota and Michigan, reported incidents to the F.B.I., and in some cases the hacks — or the response to them — degraded water operations. The tally of states reporting possible attacks to the F.B.I. is now at least a dozen, according to people familiar with the investigation. The F.B.I. has not disclosed the states publicly, but some have come forward to confirm activity.

At least 100 municipalities have detected recent malicious hacking efforts related to their water systems, though some of those may be unrelated incidents, the people said. Some security experts said the number of vulnerable systems nationwide could be far higher.

What y’all voted for, #Murica. This is the price the former United States now pays for the mass belligerence and willful ignorance exhibited by the dominant white working class and the political party to which they have pledged their allegiance. These jerks will never take a look in the mirror; whatever calamity should arise, and under whatever administration it should occur, culpability shall invariably be assigned elsewhere. I am thoroughly sick of both this horrid state of affairs and those Americans who have brought it into being. A ‘national divorce’ grows more appealing with each passing day, for I do not want these individuals — and their orange s**tbag president — lording over the rest of us a moment longer. They are literally dismantling this country on all fronts, all the while brandishing the flag and styling themselves ‘patriots’. One way or the other, this must end.

The wildfire didn't need a passport

A highly detailed glamour-style illustration of a distressed blonde woman seated upon a white toilet in an opulent marble bathroom with polished brass fittings. She wears a white satin nightdress beneath a loosely draped silk robe, one hand pressed against her lower abdomen while the other supports her tear-streaked face. Her flushed cheeks, reddened eyes, and pained expression convey exhaustion and severe gastrointestinal illness. Luxurious details, including crystal perfume bottles, folded towels, and gleaming marble surfaces, contrast sharply with her evident discomfort. Warm golden lighting accentuates the satin fabrics and refined dΓ©cor, creating a poignant juxtaposition between elegance, vulnerability, and physical suffering.

Trump, Michigan Republicans theatrically and performatively threaten Canada over wildfire smoke covering US regions. {NYT 17 July}

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/17/weather/trump-canada-tariffs-wildfire-smoke.html?smid=url-share

Ontario Premier Doug Ford provides the best comeback to the latest display of nationalist hysteria, that Canada should be held liable for acts of God. Have they considered those times the shoe hath been on the other foot?

FTA: Earlier on Friday, Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, was visibly frustrated with complaints from American lawmakers about the smoke.

“As for other elected officials in the U.S., I have to remind the American people, when there was wildfires in California, we had our water bombers on standby,” Mr. Ford, a conservative, told reporters, listing other American disasters that Ontario has helped with. “If there’s some politicians out there chirping away, well, maybe what you should do rather than complain is send support, send help, because we have done the exact same thing for our American friends. And that’s what you’re supposed to do.”

The answer to my own question is obvious… these smug #MAGA creeps simply do not care. When America's actions harm Canada or any other nation, they merely shrug. When the roles are reversed, they scream to the heavens and demand retribution (though they will not acknowledge any actual victims beyond invoking them as political props). They are bullies, thugs, and entirely emblematic of who and what the former United States of America hath become in its afterlife.

A state lawmaker and her husband have been murdered in what authorities have deemed a targeted, politically motivated assassination. It is now open season in the former United States on anyone who opposes the Trump regime

Reuters

{BBC News 14 June} Democratic state politician and husband shot dead in targeted attack, Minnesota officials say.

Open season now in the former United States on anyone opposed to the Trump regime. The blood of Melissa Hortman and her husband is on the hands of every single rank-and-file Trump voter, whether they like it or not; a nation held hostage by violently ill sociopaths at all levels. Whatever performative and half-hearted condemnations Trump, other elected Republicans, and right-wing media figures may be giving at this moment to the contrary, this is the inevitable result of #MAGA rhetoric.

Can anyone who has been paying attention genuinely doubt this has always been the intended outcome? To systematically inflame the heavily armed, anti-intellectual portion of the populace long steeped in racial, cultural, religious, and economic resentments against the rest of the nation — a very large percentage of the overall population, far larger than most care to admit. While Trump, the GOP, and its allies in the halls of power are giving lip service to being outraged, and the sort of Republican voters who are not rabid #MAGA probably are legitimately shocked and dismayed, most of the rank-and-file #MAGA crazies are celebrating the murders in Minnesota. Further violent copycat acts are inevitable for as long as this violent and outsized, Christofascist personality cult holds a death grip on the country. —Arthur Newhook, 14 June 2025.

For the sake of securing President Biden’s victory in November and maintaining continuity afterwards, Kamala Harris must be replaced immediately

US President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris at a campaign event. Photo: Andrew Harnik/Getty Images.

If anyone in this administration needs to be replaced, it is the Vice-President. Hard truth: if re-elected, President Biden shall almost certainly be compelled to step down shortly afterwards, and shall not be able to serve another four years (neither shall his orange goblin adversary, and may we proclaim this fact to the hilt). Yet, we absolutely cannot afford to abandon President Biden at this crucial moment. The calls from within the Democratic Party and among their allies in the mainstream media for the President to step aside are verging on treasonous. Having said that, we cannot ignore that Mr Biden is growing too old to do this for much longer.

There is a reason Kamala Harris is not often seen or heard: the VP’s demeanour is such that she is not a particularly likeable or relatable person. She lacks charisma and sorely lacks public speaking ability (and the United States desperately needs a well-spoken leader once more, with none in immediate sight). She is the sort who makes for an excellent district attorney but is not a capable politician. Her ascension would only invite further radicalisation of the Christian nationalist, white supremacist right (#Cult45 for short), who are already on the verge of declaring all-out civil war. To be blunt, Kamala Harris would be vanquished in an election against Donald Trump, and the consequences would be devastating. America simply does not like her, for both proper and improper reasons, yet many of these reasons are valid.

I suggest President Biden replace VP Harris with a lady of moderate politics and disposition, white in complexion. America is - then, now, and forever - a racial basket case, but now is not the hour to fret about such matters: we have a dictatorial menace to vanquish, and utmost practicality and caution must prevail. As the Christian nationalist Heritage Foundation points out - and herein they are correct - it is too late to place another candidate on the ballot in many states. We ride with President Biden until he completes the job - the task of defeating Donald Trump and the GOP in this election - but thereafter we need someone who is capable of tempering the fervour and governing with prudence. That fair lady from Minnesota, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, may be whom I have in mind, but not necessarily her. Someone of that moderate, centrist ilk. #JustSaying #Biden2024

President Biden announces plan to combat the Omicron variant, but experts warn that only more restrictive measures unacceptable to the belligerent American public could successfully contain the spread

Samuel Corum/Getty Images

It’s going to be a long, cold winter, and many will fall ill and some will die. Millions have decided that their individual ‘freedumb’ is more important than stopping the spread of this deadly plague. Lo and behold, when the Omicron variant wipes out potentially hundreds of thousands of Americans, those same people – and eager mainstream media outlets – will point the finger of blame at President Biden and other leaders. Anti-vaxxers will never take responsibility for their choices. The New York Times -

Even as President Biden on Tuesday outlined new plans for battling the highly contagious Omicron variant, public health experts warned that the measures would not be sufficient to prevent a grim rise in infections and hospitalizations over the next few weeks.

The administration’s strategy includes doubling down on vaccination campaigns and propping up hospitals as they confront a large influx of patients. Federal officials will direct resources, including Army doctors, to support health care systems and distribute rapid tests to Americans.

But Mr. Biden explicitly ruled out lockdowns and other harsh measures of the kind put in place as the pandemic first unfolded in early 2020. In interviews on Tuesday, some scientists argued that the variant’s rapid spread requires more vigorous mitigation measures.

Some expressed frustration and alarm about what they described as a timid public health response, and bemoaned the apparent lack of will among politicians and society at large for more aggressive steps. (Read more)
