The road to ruin runs on Russian diesel

A highly stylised editorial illustration depicts a glamorous auburn-haired woman standing amid a vast, devastated oil and industrial landscape. She wears a black corseted bodysuit, stockings, high-heeled boots and an open cream trench coat, clutching torn blue fabric. Tanker trains and military vehicles stretch towards burning refineries beneath a smoke-blackened sky, with aircraft overhead and Russian architecture looming in the distance. Above a faint blue-and-yellow horizon, fractured blue and gold stars evoke a shattered European alliance. Oil-slicked ground, abandoned fuel pumps and an eagle sculpture intensify the imagery of war, dependence and geopolitical ruin.

{AP 9 October} ‘Trump strikes deal with Putin to get diesel in sharp reversal of US policy weeks before midterms’ —

https://apnews.com/article/trump-russia-diesel-midterms-12baccc7aade559bf329079b0548c9da

Americans shall forever be hated by the people of Ukraine, and all of Europe, for their treachery in returning a known Putin stooge to high office. We are a nation of cowards, backstabbers, lunatics, and freaks. Much like Russia. Nikita Khrushchev famously declared: ‘We will bury you’, in regards to the United States, and it would appear Donald Trump is doing everything in his power to help finally make that happen.

If Zelensky continues to strike Russian oil refineries — as Ukraine hath every right to do in a war it did not begin — what happens when those attacks collide directly with Trump’s new arrangement with Putin? I fear where this road may lead. Washington is already pressuring Kyiv over its refinery campaign; should Trump ever go so far as to order American military action against Ukraine, the resulting breach with Europe and NATO would be of a magnitude scarcely imaginable. I shall not pretend to know precisely where such madness would end, only there shall be serious consequences for every American citizen, and billions others besides. A vastly wider conflict may become a likelihood.

One way or the other, it is not likely to mean lower diesel prices.  Was whining and moaning for nearly three years — whilst Mr Biden was still in office and US-Ukraine relations were still warm — about the money spent on Ukraine’s defence worth the dissolution of the post-war, Western alliance that hath largely kept peace and brought prosperity for eighty years? Was betraying Ukraine really worth risking a global war, you dumb f**ks? I honestly believe Trump may be deliberately leading America in that direction. He is a destroyer of nations, most especially his own.

This American’s conscience is clear; if worst comes to worst, as I now fear it will, then all Americans who are opposed to this treason and sickening evil shall be compelled to take some sort of action in protest. A general strike, mass protests… hell if I know what is going to happen: we only know that any uprising shall be bloody, with no guarantee that liberty and common sense will save the day. And, I believe, an uprising is exactly what Trump and his allies want. He and they have been licking their lips, ever since he was restored to power, awaiting an all-out crackdown on American society, and it matters not what the current poll numbers may be, the majority of Americans are going to go along to get along once this crackdown is implemented. Many eagerly so.

Remember, ‘y’all’ voted for this. We had already suffered through one term of this fool, which ended in disaster yet very well could have been worse still had some people possessing a degree of competence and character not remained around him to impose restraint (is anybody at all serving that role in the current regime?) Then — after four years during which he officially became a convicted felon and spent the whole time undermining President Joe Biden at every turn (in which the media was entirely complicit) — ‘y’all’ brought him back anyway; anything to avoid being governed by a black female Democrat (whom I harbour no love for, by the way). Anything to be entertained and have your favourite circus clown back on the main stage.

The rest of us warned you exactly what was going to happen. We see it all playing out: our place in the world hath been ruined, probably beyond repair. We are at odds with Canada now, for f**k’s sake! Our military might is rapidly being depleted, our economy is collapsing (in large part due to this regime’s imbecilic fiscal policies), preventable diseases are spreading, our natural resources are being plundered, and our civil liberties are being eroded.

Was this all worth it? Is silencing and punishing fellow Americans worth the very real pain that hath already been felt, but in earnest is only just beginning? I suspect, for all too many and perhaps for some reading this, the answer is an unequivocal ‘yes’.

The biggest lie in the universe is that people are basically good by nature. No: human nature is rotten, and human beings shall forever hurt themselves in order to hurt their enemies more grievously. Present-day #Murica may yet go down in history as one of the prime examples of this eternal truism. It is going to be an ugly fall, and I pray I somehow shall not have to bear witness to it.

No peace on the horizon

A richly detailed illustration depicts a blonde woman standing upon a windswept hillside overlooking an expansive Eastern European landscape. Her long hair and sweeping crimson shawl stream dramatically in the wind, while she wears a short white traditional embroidered dress, lace stockings and red boots. Below, villages, farmland and a winding river extend towards distant cities crowned with golden-domed churches. The pastoral tranquillity is threatened by an immense bank of dark storm clouds advancing from the horizon, their lower edges forming ominous block-like silhouettes suggestive of military formations. Shafts of sunlight still illuminate the countryside, creating a stark contrast between fragile peace and the approaching menace of war.

Ukrainian intelligence: desperate Putin may be preparing ground assault on Kyiv, possibly involving Belarussian troops. {The Kyiv Independent 29 August}

https://kyivindependent.com/russia-planning-operation-in-northern-ukraine-including-kyiv-military-says/

FTA: Russia's military leadership had been tasked with preparing several operational scenarios for an offensive in northern Ukraine, with Kyiv and Chernihiv identified as key areas, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Pavlo Palisa said on Aug. 28 during a closed-door briefing with journalists, Suspilne reported.

Palisa said the information had been verified and that the Presidential Office had received it from several intelligence sources, without specifying whether they were Ukrainian or foreign.

"Indeed, several options were considered (in Russia)," Palisa said at the briefing.

"The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has developed possible response scenarios, including measures to defend, protect, and counter these actions."

Palisa said no new offensive groupings are currently being detected in the Kyiv and Chernihiv directions. Kyiv Oblast borders Belarus to the north, while Chernihiv Oblast borders both Belarus and Russia.

"Our top priority is to prevent the conditions from emerging that would allow Russia to launch any offensive operations at all," Palisa added.

The lady of the Black Sea

A highly detailed fantasy illustration depicts a blonde warrior princess standing atop a rocky cliff overlooking a turbulent coastal landscape. Dressed in richly embroidered Slavic-inspired garments with an ornate blue-and-crimson cloak, decorated belt, jewellery, and leather boots, she raises an elaborate sword high above her head in a gesture of defiance and resolve. Her long hair streams dramatically in the wind as she gazes towards the horizon with determination. Below her, a rugged shoreline stretches beside dark waters, while damaged infrastructure, smoke plumes, and signs of conflict scar the distant landscape. Overhead, Saturn hangs prominently in a cloud-filled twilight sky, its rings glowing against the fading light. The composition combines heroic symbolism, folklore-inspired costume design, and epic environmental detail to create a powerful image of courage, resistance, and perseverance in the face of adversity.

The nightingale’s daughter

A richly detailed digital illustration of a blonde woman reclining upon an ornate bed within a warmly lit traditional Eastern European interior. She weareth a loose white embroidered blouse with red-and-black folk motifs; her hair is styled in two long braids tied with ribbons. Her eyes are closed; one hand resteth lightly against her chest—serene reflection or quiet contentment. The bed is covered with patterned textiles and embroidered cushions. A softly glowing oil lamp illuminateth carved wooden furnishings, casting warm amber light. Through a leaded-glass window, a cool blue night appeareth—warmth and darkness in striking interplay. Nostalgia, domestic comfort, cultural heritage, tranquillity—cinematic lighting, vivid textures, meticulous detail.

Ukrainian forces deliver a proper thrashing, deep into the heart of Russia

A dramatic nocturnal editorial illustration presenting a vast aerial panorama of Ukraine beneath an immense ghostly outline of Saturn dominating the night sky. Across the landscape, scores of dark drone silhouettes sweep in multiple directions while brilliant arcs of anti-aircraft fire and intercepted drones burst into radiant explosions—a vast ominous fireworks display. Rivers, fields, and settlements stretch to the horizon, punctuated by fires and smoke. Foreground, a sprawling industrial refinery burneth fiercely, casting deep amber light as black smoke billows. Offshore, several vessels burn upon the dark sea. Blacks, deep blues, ash greys, and orange firelight convey the immense scale, intensity, and relentless persistence of modern long-range drone warfare.

End of the conqueror's dream

A lavish fantasy-allegorical illustration of two idealised female figures representing opposing nations amid industrial destruction. Centre-left, a blonde woman in elaborate blue-and-gold ceremonial attire standeth atop shattered machinery—Ukrainian colours, halo-like crown, mythic queen. One boot resteth on wreckage; she gestureth with triumph. At her feet reclineth a red-haired woman in rich red attire, gazing upward with exhaustion and defeat. Drones fill the sky, tracing luminous patterns. Right, an oil refinery burneth fiercely; pipelines and storage tanks dominate the landscape; traffic and fuel stations stretch leftward. Ornamental motifs blend with scenes of warfare. A symbolic allegory of conflict—military success, energy strikes, resilience, defeat, and national struggle through epic fantasy and surreal storytelling. Dramatic, theatrical, emotionally charged.

Sir Winston Churchill on the reality of public opinion

A satirical digital portrait of Winston Churchill reimagined in the twenty-first century, his legendary bulldog scowl trained not upon the enemy but a glowing smartphone. The artist renders him with remarkable fidelity: the bowler hat, polka-dotted bow tie, and omnipresent cigar—all hallmarks of Churchillian defiance—are intact, yet their gravitas is comically undercut by the incongruity of modern technology. Behind him, the Union Jack looms in vivid hues of red, white, and blue, emblematic of the indomitable British spirit he once personified. The light catches the creases of his brow and the curl of smoke from his cigar, giving the scene both humour and gravitas. The composition suggests an allegory of the digital age—an icon of steadfast conviction confronted by the triviality and distraction of the contemporary world, frowning as though the fate of civilisation itself depended upon what he sees on the screen.
image generated via ChatGPT

“There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion,” stated Winston Churchill—a remark that lands with eerie foresight in the age of dictatorial algorithms and mass hysteria, wherein opinion is made a merchandised trade, and the mob a marketplace. One may well conceive the old war-dog beholding the endless scroll of social babble, and judging—after his wonted fashion and without the least strain of hyperbole—that our civilisation had clean parted company with its wits.

Born on 30 November 1874 amidst the rolling fields of West Oxfordshire, and sprung of an American mother of notable grace and an English father of noble blood yet scant forbearance, Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill embodied a species of Englishman now almost extinct. A lover of cigars, whisky, and the English language in equal measure, he stood as the living antithesis of his nemesis, the teetotal vegetarian tyrant across the Channel. Churchill’s vices were human; his virtues, monumental.

By any reckoning, the twentieth century’s most formidable statesman—a relic of another age even whilst he lived, and yet utterly needful to his own time. In an era that prized shallow cries above substance, he wielded words as others wield artillery; and when civilisation hung by a thread, it was his voice—gravelled, resolute, and adamant—that held the rampart fast.

In today’s absurd universe, one with many echoes of the atmosphere that led to the Second World War, Churchill’s spectre is more needed than ever. Yet I discern much of his iron resolve in Volodymyr Zelensky: a witness that greatness, however blemished, once walked amongst mortal men, and that valour, when once uttered aloud, may yet ring forth with truth.

Like the thugs and toadies they are, Trump and Vance endeavour to intimidate and denigrate Zelensky, within the confines of the Oval Office and before the scrutiny of live cameras; accuse the Ukrainian leader of wanting to start World War III

AP: A transcript of Trump and Zelensky's Oval Office argument

This is the most reprehensible and abhorrent spectacle I have ever witnessed emanating from an American President and Vice-President. The Musk regime has transformed the United States into an adversary of Ukraine and a confederate of the genocidal megalomaniac in Moscow. It would appear that the majority of Americans sanction this position if the persistent lamentations regarding financial assistance to Ukraine during President Biden's tenure serve as any barometer. I am profoundly revolted by, and mortified for, the citizenry of this wretched nation; they have facilitated this fascistic phantasmagoria.

Had the American populace harboured the sort of sentiments in the 1930s and '40s that they presently exhibit (and indeed a minority did, though nowhere approaching today's preponderance, and certainly not including the President of the United States), they would have been proffering justifications for Hitler whilst attributing culpability to the Jews, Poles, and others for their own subjugation. This is not the nation in which I was reared, nor one in which I wish to reside, and were I possessed of sufficient financial resources, I should depart from this moribund cesspit with unprecedented alacrity.resources, I should depart from this moribund cesspit with unprecedented alacrity.

Decency hath forsaken this abode. In a country fraught with ludicrous partisanship and division, denizens from both the left and the right forsake our allies, and, instead, warmly clasp hands with our most malevolent adversaries

Pray, where doth sanity and virtue reside in this bloody country? Much of the American left doth point accusing fingers at Israel in the face of assault, with too many openly applauding Hamas; all disseminating untruths they fervently wish to embrace. The true hues of Jew-hatred are becoming manifest on each side. Most of the American right doth lay blame upon Ukraine for the onslaught, with many boldly extolling Vladimir Putin and reproving (the Jewish) Mr. Zelensky; all spreading falsehoods. Extremes in both factions (arguably the majority of everybody now, the centre hath witherered) do heap blame upon the victims of terrorism, oppression, and anti-semitism. And how quick are each extreme to lay blame upon President Biden, the actual grown-up and decent, sensible human being in the room? Left and right, they cheer on the literal murderers, terrorists, and despots of their choosing, performing and thinking as their leaders dictate.

In these times, I am thoroughly repulsed and oft find myself in solitude with my steadfast beliefs. Uphold Israel, champion Ukraine, and cease the dissemination of propaganda and fabrications, predominantly spawned in the troll factories of St. Petersburg and Beijing, be it from the left or the right. If a bumbling soul and a virtual cripple such as I can discern these matters, what ails everyone else? Alas, I detest these times, and they will become darker still. Aye, far darker. Lunatics of all persuasions are steering us not merely toward a domestic civil conflict but straight into World War III. A lamentable state, indeed. Nick work, #Murica, nation of f**king imbeciles.

#NeverTrump #NeverDeSantis: Ukrainian-American voters angry at the GOP’s 2024 forerunners for their pro-Putin stances

Republicans are really shooting themselves in the foot by doing or saying anything that will curry favor with their party’s toxic and compromised leader and his toxic supporters. Or, for that matter, being reflexively against anything President Biden supports. FTA: ‘The votes of Ukrainian-Americans - traditionally a Republican-leaning bloc - could have an outsize impact on the 2024 general election, according to some lawmakers, strategists and advocates, plus a Reuters analysis of U.S. census data.

‘While the number of Americans who identify as being of Ukrainian descent is relatively small at about 1 million, they are densely distributed in a string of unusually competitive areas where their votes could potentially be decisive.’ {Reuters 5/20}

Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and the hard truth about mankind

Laura Boushnak/NYT

Explosion kills over fifty Ukrainian prisoners of war at a Russian-operated detention camp in Donetsk; Russia says Ukraine used ‘precision weapons supplied by the United States’ - Most people are not good people: The hard lesson we all need to be learning, but too many of us simply refuse to acknowledge. Over and over in this post-truth world, I keep futilely asking myself: ‘How can anyone believe such obvious crap?’ It applies to everything having to do with Donald Trump’s political career: The most obvious conman of all-time that any kindergartner should be able to see through. People of reason were baffled by his ascendancy, but Trump proved to be crazy like a fox. Trump understood that millions would support and vigorously defend him to absurd degrees if he told those people what they wanted to hear, and presented himself as their protector and weapon against the rest of a society they hate. Donald Trump gives the defiant license to be their true, awful selves. For this, he has their undying loyalty, and now they are on the cusp of cementing #Murica as a Christofascist state. Vladimir Putin and Russia know that people will willingly believe an obvious lie, demand others accept said lie as fact, and even kill and die for it if said lie appeals to an individual’s innate biases and desires. Confirmation bias. If a Trump or a Putin tell their followers the sky is yellow, their followers are going to say the sky is yellow and anyone who disagrees is a lunatic and a traitor. Ask oneself, why were all the characters in the fairy tale afraid to tell the Emperor he has no clothes? Why do the words of Voltaire - ‘Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities’ - resonate through the ages, and why are people so eager to adopt absurdities as their guiding principles to begin with? ‘Because, f**k you, that’s why.’ Yeah, in a nutshell, that really is it: Ignorance, resentment, tribalism, and an inherent lust for violence and domination. The majority of human beings in most any given time and place are not overly enlightened creatures - to varying degrees of degradation, of course; #Murica now is boiling on that scale. Grievance is the most powerful drug on earth, and reality and reason matter not to the aggrieved. Now, if only those who are of reason, empathy, and intelligence would stop their own pretending, and finally put a rest to this obnoxious lie we enforce upon ourselves: The lie that says people are basically good by nature. NO, just the opposite: The entire purpose of civilization is to contain our base instincts, else we wipe ourselves out and all ceases to be. (New York Times 7/30)

‘The mouth of a bear.’ Ukrainian refugees sent to Russia - Detailing how desperate Ukrainians from devastated eastern regions are lured, or otherwise compelled, into Russia. Often forced to be propaganda tools, although just as often left abandoned thousands of miles from home with no money or documents. Some ordinary Russians, however, are displaying kindness and bravery in helping the refugees find their way out of the belly of the beast. (AP 7/20)

The Kremlin is bribing school teachers to move to occupied parts of Ukraine, in order that students get a ‘corrected’ (propagandized) education - Our Republicans, particularly in the Southern U.S., are learning well from their Russian masters: The far-right, heretical Christofascist crusade to control what people see, learn, think, and feel becomes more violent and aggressive with each day. The attack on education and the anti-intellectual undertones are all by design. Those who are adhering to this radical ideology, wherever in the world they are, need to do some real soul searching. It is not God who they are serving with their zealotry, and His very first commandment is mere lip service to them, at very best. (Washington Post 7/18)

A second wave of Russians flee Putin’s regime - No exact numbers available, but it is well into the hundreds of thousands and could exceed a million in short order. Smart Russians are seeing the writing on the wall: Russia is doomed, and there is no future there except for more tyranny, misery, and death. The same is going to occur in #Murica once the Fascists have consolidated their power completely, the exodus will be epic (and may already be starting, at least internally, as ‘red states’ become more authoritarian and intrusive into the private lives of citizens.) Europe has been overrun in recent years by refugees from the Middle East, and now Ukraine and Russia, and it will not be able to accommodate millions of North Americans, to say nothing of millions escaping from Africa, India, etc. in large part due to climate change. Where is everybody going to live on this planet if most of it is uninhabitable? The answer, of course, is that most will no longer be living, period. (CNBC 7/14)

Russian state media gave an inordinate amount of attention to the ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests in Ottawa earlier this year, and Fox News followed suit - Excerpt: ‘(R)ecently, Russia has focused less on tipping the scale towards specific electoral outcomes. Rather, according to an FBI official who spoke out earlier this year, the country has focused on sowing chaos and distrust abroad. “The primary objective is not to create a particular version of the truth but rather cloud the truth and erode our ability to find it, creating a sentiment that no narrative or news source can be trusted at all,” David Porter, an assistant section chief with the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, told a U.S. election security conference in March. “To put it simply, in this space, Russia wants to watch us tear ourselves apart.”’ (Global News 7/13)

The Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation releases a list of American public figures who are propagating Vladimir Putin’s lies and distortions - The list includes Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), and the ‘journalist’ Glenn Greenwald of the New York Times. The next step is placing international sanctions on these people, and expanding the list to include all Americans - lawmakers, media figures, and rank-and-file, private citizens alike; the entire fifth column - who can reasonably be proven to be spreading disinformation and propaganda straight out of Putin’s troll factories. It is war; enemies of humanity will either be stopped, or humanity will be slaughtered in numbers that may make most past mass atrocities pale in comparison. (Newsweek 7/26)

Jeffrey Sonnenfeld/Steven Tian: Actually, Russia’s economy is imploding - It’d be nice if Western economists wouldn’t go by the Russian government’s fabricated numbers when analyzing the state of Russia’s economy since heavy sanctions were put in place. The sanctions are working; albeit, it is clear that Putin is willing to do tremendous, even fatal, harm to his own nation and people to satiate his grievances. Advice to any Russian who may already be suffering a degree or two of economic deprivation: Get the hell out of that s**thole now, before you are all starving and your leader has to regularly threaten nations with nuclear annihilation unless said countries provide food and other aid - see the last thirty years or so of North Korea. Russia’s only real advantage over us is psychological warfare, and on that count they are winning and it is a devastating advantage to have. Vladimir Putin has committed great psychological harm upon the collective psyche of America with his propaganda war. As with the old Soviet Union, the facade will collapse in time. America and Russia are dying nations, and the Fascists of both intuitively know they are heading to the ashbins of history, hence their desperation to reverse course at all costs. (Foreign Policy 7/22)

New findings detail Trump plan to use Census for partisan gain; A proposal to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, struck down by the Supreme Court, would have intended to create an undercount favoring the GOP - I’m not certain non-citizens should be counted toward apportioning representatives, either, but am certain that the cabal’s objections were solely to benefit themselves at the expense of everybody else. It has never been this apparent: The barely-unspoken fear and understanding among much of white America, and nearly all who identify as Republicans, is that we are being replaced and we must act now to repress those replacing us. I have no interest in seeing my race perish, nor am I very fearful that Whites are going to go extinct in my lifetime or in the lifetimes of anyone alive now. Let us remember, that at no point in history have Caucasians ever been a majority of people on this planet. Nor are we entitled to anything; all of that is in the hands of God, and anyone attempting to speak for God is committing heresy. The Republican Party is not entitled to eternal power, and neither is the Democratic Party. The two-party deathgrip on America is choking the life out of it. (New York Times 7/20)

Study: People in Republican counties have higher death rates than those in Democratic counties - From a point of relative parity in 2001, mortality rates between ‘red’ and ‘blue’ regions have diverged. The hard left and the nationalist populist right drowning out the center, and neither extreme has any love for Ukraine

John Minchillo/AP

The few million Americans on the hard left, and the many more millions of the nationalist populist right - #Cult45 - each want to commit genocide against all who disobey them. There is no other possible endgame for all of their madness. They have no intention of living in peace with others, they want the ‘others’ gone. Each extreme is a manifestation of their various resentments and their hatred for everybody who does not look, think, or act as they do. When the civil war begins in earnest, it will be those in the middle who will be targeted first by each belligerent side. To ideologues and murderous extremists - which roughly two-thirds of this country has either become or is becoming - not taking a side is the greatest sin of all. Truth be told, the rest of us are on a side: The side of reason and sanity. A losing battle. We had one last victory in November 2020, and as a result we have a president who is level-headed and doing what he can to slow down America’s descent into Hades. All he can do is try to slow it down, but the people of this country will not allow him to do so. Our battle is pretty well lost, we have entered the ‘gates of delirium’ (and if one wants an aural portrait of the hell that is about to descend upon the United States, google the song with that title and listen.) I’ve been feeling this coming on for several years, and the dread only grows stronger: We are closer to civil war than even its highest ringleaders know. #Murica

Republicans leading generic congressional ballot in ABC News poll, respondents blame President Biden for every ill in the universe - Newsflash: Americans are either pathetically, embarrassingly stupid, or they approve of sedition, racism, treason, and Fascism. President Zelenskyy thanks President Biden and the American people for their support - Unfortunately, not all in #Murica are actually supporting Ukraine. Best I can tell, after about a week or two, most wanted to hear nothing more about it. They are more concerned with celebrity scandals, race baiting, and what others are doing with their private parts. All too many - a large percentage, and the loudest voices - have spent the last two years kicking and screaming for their right to be ignorant. Longer than two years, but it is reaching a fever pitch. The country is self-destructing, and anyone who thinks politicians, businessmen, and ‘elitists’ are solely to blame for that is a bloody fool. Thank you, President Zelenskyy, on behalf of that remnant of Americans who still want to live in an orderly and free universe. Π‘Π»Π°Π²Π° Π£ΠΊΡ€Π°Ρ—Π½Ρ– (Ukrinform 4/28)

Democracy Now

Hard left icon Noam Chomsky spouts baseless conspiracy theories, praises Trump for seeking a ‘diplomatic solution’ to the war in Ukraine, and demands that innocent Ukrainians submit to Putin - It is the extreme left and extreme right that are driving the agendas of the Democratic and Republican parties, and they are the ones driving the public discourse. The plurality of people in the middle have been drowned out, and that is not by accident. Extremists always hate moderates more than they hate the extremists on the other end of the spectrum. It is becoming outright dangerous to be a moderate, to not take a side, in #Murica today. It is really no surprise that both extremes are falling over themselves to praise Vladimir Putin and victim-blame the Ukrainian people. It is no surprise they are turning a blind eye to the genocide occurring, as they wish nothing more than to witness a large-scale purging of the American population. Noam Chomsky and every hard left radical can join #Cult45 and the rest of the right-wing whack jobs in the depths of Hell. (Mediate 5/01)

Assessing Germany and France’s role in the ‘historical failure’ of appeasing Vladimir Putin for two decades. Plus, two incidents that speak to how depraved American society is becoming

AP/Kremlin

Did Germany and France turn a ‘blind eye’ to the threat posed by Vladimir Putin? - In my estimation, all of us have been underestimating this tyrant for the past twenty-two years. Either out of naivety or cowardice, nobody in a position to do so has ever stood up to this bully, and that very much includes the United States and the administrations that preceded the current one. Nonetheless, Germany and France are being singled out by some as bearing a greater share of responsibility. Excerpt: ‘In hindsight, “it is hard to know whether a membership plan for Ukraine would have been enough to dissuade Putin”, said Laure Delcour, an expert in EU-Russia relations at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris. “NATO membership is a very long process and it is quite possible that Ukraine would still not be a member as we speak,” she told FRANCE 24. “One can also imagine that Putin would have moved faster to thwart Ukraine’s admission.” “Move fast” is precisely what Putin did just four months after the Bucharest summit, sending his tanks into Georgia in support of pro-Russian separatists in the breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He repeated the trick six years later in Ukraine’s Donbas region, going one step further with the annexation of Crimea. Each of Putin’s incursions met an ambivalent response from European leaders, alternating between heated rhetoric and sanctions, at first, and attempts at dΓ©tente, soon after. With Ukraine now in the throes of a catastrophic war, those leaders stand accused of emboldening the Russian president and being blind to his imperialist ambitions. “Europe didn’t go wrong, Germany and France did,” said Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, vice-president of the German Marshall Fund and head of its Berlin office, in an interview with FRANCE 24. “France and Germany tend to speak for the rest of Europe. But these miss-assessments were made in Paris and Berlin, not elsewhere. Eastern Europe didn’t go wrong, northern Europe didn’t go wrong,” he added. Kleine-Brockhoff said the war in Ukraine called for an urgent reappraisal of German and French policy vis-Γ -vis Russia. He added: “Not only is the post-Cold War order crumbling in front of our eyes, so are the strategies deployed by Germany and France.”’ (France 24 4/05)

Zelenskyy, CIA Director warn the world that Putin will use nukes, while Russia has plunged most of the world into recessionary conditions, and a COVID-inspired kidnapping plot is foiled in Germany

Desktop Nexus

Happy Easter to one and all. He is Risen!

CIA Director William Burns: U.S. cannot afford to take Russian nuclear threat lightly (Reuters 4/14)

President Zelenskyy warns Ukraine and the world must be prepared for Putin to use tactical nuclear weapons - Yes, nothing can be put past Putin. And if Putin does resort to such desperate and sickening tactics, then NATO is going to have to respond. At which time, Mother Russia becomes a war zone. Perhaps Putin’s ultimate goal is the destruction of all humanity, for he appears intent on achieving it. (CNN 4/15)

The IMF lowers its economic forecast for 143 countries as a direct result of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine - Putin is not only destroying Ukraine and has not only sealed his own country’s fate, he is wrecking the global economy. Obvious to anybody paying attention, except to the Russians, of course. And in #Murica, where anything that goes wrong is President Biden’s fault and, “golly gee, that Putin fella’ is a genius, just like Trump told us.” (The National 4/15)

German coronavirus protesters accused of plot to kidnap the health minister - The entire world really must be going crazy. Even in what is, today, the sanest country on earth, we still have echoes of their Nazi past and - albeit, to a lesser extent, for now - #Murica’s current reality. Only in Deutschland, I do not believe the courts will be foolish enough to acquit these individuals, as a Michigan court recently did in the case of two men charged with plotting to kidnap the governor. Putin and the Moscow Establishment begins making move to restore Trump in 2024, thoughts on Pink Floyd’s campaign for Ukraine, ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ dumbassery, and more

Office of the Presidency of Ukraine

Putin’s top Ukrainian ally, oligarch/opposition party leader Viktor Medvedchuk, is captured by law enforcement - Disguised in an army uniform, Medvedchuk escaped house arrest just days after Russia began their war on aggression. Chalk this up as another big win for Ukraine. (CNBC 4/12)

Putin moving to influence the 2024 U.S. presidential election, makes it clear he wants Trump returned to power - Excerpt: ‘American intelligence officials reportedly assessed that Russian President Vladimir Putin may use the Biden administration’s support for Ukraine as a pretext to order a new campaign to interfere in U.S. elections. Though AP reported that “it is not yet clear which candidates Russia might try to promote or what methods it might use,” Russian state media seem to be in agreement that former U.S. President Donald Trump remains Moscow’s candidate of choice.’ They’re telling us exactly what they plan to do, yet just keep on screaming ‘fake news,’ by all means, #Cult45. We have a massive problem on our hands in #Murica, and that is millions no longer take Russia seriously as a threat and even sympathize with it and against our own leaders. While there are some possible signs out there that Trump is fading as a political figure, the fact is Putin and the Russians remain convinced he is their best option to unseat Biden and restore a Moscow-friendly regime in D.C. And I remain convinced that tens of millions of Americans would, and will, kill fellow Americans for the orange jackass, or at least in the larger cause of ‘owning the libs.’ Putin knows the United States is a ticking time bomb and its people want to rip each others’ throats out, and he will gleefully continue to exploit these divisions to his benefit as long as Americans allow him to. (Julia Davis 4/11)

Bob Vosseller/Jersey Shore Online

‘Let’s Go, Brandon’ is just an exceptionally lame and dumb way to announce to the world that one is proud to be dumb, don't try to enlighten them, and they will be belligerent little bitches for the rest of time because we took their orange hero away from the White House. As much as they claim to love this country, their brand of patriotism is cartoonish and completely insincere. Pure and simple, belligerence and hate is their way of life now, and nothing good is going to come of it. Not for us, but especially not for them.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan loses no confidence vote in legislature, must abdicate his office - Pakistan does what the United States - or its GOP senators - twice refused to do, and that is remove a corrupt and tyrannical leader from power. (Deutsche Welle 4/09)

Pink Floyd

#PinkFloyd #Ukraine Anybody who says David, Nick, and their friends - and most of all, Andriy Khlyvnyuk - are doing anything but the right thing are not acting in good faith. Millions of innocent Ukrainians are staring death in the face via the Russians. Some have even been abducted by Russian troops, possibly sent into the wilds of Siberia for no other crime than existing. Including children. Roger Waters gave an interview to Russia Today as recently as February, declaring that only idiots would believe that Putin would ever invade Ukraine. Then, on 2/24, Putin invaded Ukraine. Egg on Rogers Waters' face, and he is not needed at this time. 'Hey Hey, Rise Up' is perfect as is, and all give thanks to our leader in Floyd-dom, David Gilmour, for making it happen.

Setting the record straight on Trump’s involvement in and crusade against Ukraine, and ode of sorts to Poland, and the importance of having pencil and paper on hand at all times

Just a quick update this Saturday afternoon. I’m tired …

Zelenskyy demands strong global response to Kramatorsk train station bombing (AP 4/09)

The truth about Trump and Ukraine - An absolute must-read, been meaning to post this for days now. Our former president has blood on his hands, re: Ukraine. (Seth Abramson 3/30)

Hats off to Poland: Poland, indeed, has been exceptional in its openness to its neighbors. There are, however, some very real concerns about their government and its commitment to democracy. I trust those issues will be worked out, and Poland is going to emerge as a global leader.

At least 16 killed in Burkina Faso army base attack by jihadists following January military coup (Reuters 4/08)

Unsolicited life advice: While writing blog articles and posting on social media, or even just in one’s everyday activities, having a pencil and notepad or notebook on hand is essential. Writing things down, by hand, improves our memories and keeps us (at least, relatively) sharp. I got away from this habit for a long time, and now I am correcting course. Truly, I have little other choice, given how scatterbrained my alcohol-addled, battle-scarred ass is.

Russian strike kills women and children at crowded train station in Kramatorsk, thoughts on the confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson, and a fine example of how conspiracist thinking has spread beyond politics and into every aspect of our lives

Letting any and all Russian/pro-Russian propagandists know that most of the world sees through Russia’s lies, and - the nationalist populists who have taken control of America’s Republican Party aside - few are buying the contention that it is the Ukrainians who are the Nazis and aggressors. Rarely in human history - the scapegoating of Jews being the notable exceptions - has there ever been a more shameless and hateful example of one group of people projecting their issues onto another. Given the atrocities they are committing against the Ukrainian people, and given how strongly they hold to this idea of ‘us against the world,’ I do not believe there will ever be any reasoning with Vladimir Putin and the Russian nation. This is not even the Russia of Soviet times, when a degree of logic and a healthy fear of mutually assured destruction tempered their barbarism and aggression. Russia has reverted to a more primitive state, and they are only going to be subdued by force  #StopPutin #StopRussianAggression #StandWithUkraine Π‘Π»Π°Π²Π° Π£ΠΊΡ€Π°Ρ—Π½Ρ–

Killing children, ‘for the children.’ Russian air strike hits crowded train station in eastern Ukraine, killing at least 50 civilians and injuring hundreds more - My blood is boiling. Excerpt: ‘A missile hit a train station where thousands of people had flocked to flee in eastern Ukraine, killing 50 people Friday, Ukrainian authorities said, while warning they expect to find more evidence of war crimes in areas abandoned by Russian troops. Photos from the scene showed bodies covered with tarps on the ground and the remnants of a rocket with the words “For the children” painted on it in Russian. About 4,000 civilians were in and around the station, the office of Ukraine’s prosecutor-general said, adding that most were women and children heeding calls to leave the area before Russia launches a full-scale offensive in the country’s east. The Russian Defense Ministry denied attacking the station in Kramatorsk, a city in Ukraine’s contested Donbas region, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian leaders accused Russia’s military of deliberately targeting a location where only civilians were assembled.’ (AP 4/08)

Ketanji Brown Jackson is confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Supreme Court Justice - First black woman to sit on the high court. To the extent yours truly paid any attention to her confirmation hearings - virtually not at all - the Republicans made colossal fools of themselves (just another day for them), but also delivered all the crazy the base demands. The belligerence, racism, and showboating is not hurting them with public opinion; the general public is severely divided, and the portion of people the GOP needs to win elections actively demand their representatives engage in performative bulls**t, and ‘protect’ them from the rest of us and the rest of the world - especially people who look like Ketanji Brown Jackson. Congratulations to Justice Jackson, but her life just got a hell of a lot more complicated. (CBS News 4/07)

Leader of a Proud Boys chapter and January 6 insurrectionist pleads guilty, will testify against his former co-seditionists - Could prove to provide valuable testimony, but nothing less than ten years in prison and lifetime disenfranchisement will be suitable. (Washington Post 4/08)

Sharing the above tweet to make a point. Here we have the owner of a professional wrestling organization – bear with me - declaring that because there are fans online who don’t like the goofy product he puts out, there must be an organized conspiracy by his (larger, established) primary competition. The point I’m making is not about professional wrestling or predatory business practices (which Khan’s competition has certainly been guilty of at times in their history), but the mindset that has spread beyond politics and into every aspect of our lives. We have as good of an example of this as any right here. Most everybody’s brains are conspiracy-addled today: Anything bad that happens, or anything they don’t just like, it must all be because some shady figures in the shadows are pulling the puppet strings in order to oppress and control others. This mindset always blinds individuals to the words and actions of true oppressors, such as Vladimir Putin, and said mindset is the result of conditioning from actual tyrants. Exactly why the likes of Putin, Donald Trump, and every populist dictator in modern history have been so devoted to defining the narrative, and so quick to tell their subjects that the other side is out to get them, and only he can provide protection. And people eat this s**t up with a silver spoon. Sickening. It is really quite sad and juvenile, but this is what Trumpism has done to #Murica. It has made us all paranoid, hateful, and unable to differentiate between reality and delusion. It will take generations for society as a whole to disavow itself of this conspiracy-addled mindset, but then we probably don’t have that much time left before mankind’s collective suicide.
