Netherlands: a terminally ill twelve-year-old hath been legally euthanised, the first under a new law allowing a dignified passing

A detailed political illustration of Dutch Health Minister Sophie Hermans addressing the parliament while holding an official document. Standing at a microphone, she appeareth composed and serious; lawmakers about her listen attentively, many with concerned expressions. The chamber is rendered with polished wood panelling, formal seating, and subdued lighting. Above and behind are two inset scenes: left, a review committee examineth documents around a conference table; right, a doctor speaketh with anxious parents beside a child in a hospital bed. Together, they symbolise oversight, legal review, medical consultation, and family involvement. Solemn and deliberative—the ethical, legal, and humanitarian dimensions of a sensitive debate concerning end-of-life decisions for seriously ill children.

Guaranteed, the former United States — at least so long as it remains a single political entity, and it shall not in the long-term — will probably be the last nation on earth to allow its citizens autonomy over their own lives.

The American people and their institutions (not least the theocrats) will never allow it. We are destined eternally to be slaves to the state and to one another, all while proclaiming how ‘free’ and happy we are for it.

America, as it is composed now, is a nation with a lot of growing up. Rather hard to grow when one is committed to cruelty and inhumanity. The nation is a reflection of its president: evil, rotting, decaying, and, like a wounded animal, more dangerous than ever before. We would rather our children, elderly, and sick suffer than show mercy, and tell ourselves it is Jesus’ will.

And, maybe it is His will. I know He hath never loved me, not from the day of my nativity, no matter how much I tried to reach out to Him through all these bloody miserable, thankless years.

No matter, to force anyone to live against their will is sick, demented, and a gross violation of basic human rights, and Jesus Himself will not tell me otherwise.

Hantavirus outbreak forces the evacuation of patients from a cruise ship bound for Europe: the next Covid, or merely a warning of worse things to come?

A cinematic, painterly scene shows a group of women moving along the outer deck of a large cruise ship during an organised evacuation. They wear light, flowing summer garments, now damp and clinging in places, and each has a medical face mask covering her nose and mouth. Their expressions, visible in their eyes and posture, convey alertness and unease as they clutch personal belongings—passports, bags, and small cases—while proceeding in a line. The deck glistens with moisture, reflecting a sky that hangs heavy with muted light. Behind them, lifeboats are being lowered by crew members in high-visibility gear, while additional passengers gather along the railings above, watching the controlled operation unfold. The composition contrasts elegance and vulnerability with the mechanical precision of emergency procedure, capturing a moment of tension managed through order and discipline at sea.

{NYT 6 May} ‘Hantavirus Patients Land in Amsterdam With More Cruise Ship Evacuations Planned’

A new pandemic cometh? To be fair, hantavirus doth not appear to spread easily, nor is it some novel mutant outbreak of the sort that emerged from the wet market in Wuhan in November 2019. And yet, what happens when there is another public-health emergency, whether this or something else entirely? How marvellous that Trump is in charge, for we all remember how magnificently he performed during COVID-19. Meaning, of course, that we have chosen to forget how badly he bungled it; all part of the larger pattern of a nation that hath simply given up and allowed one monstrously spoiled infant to reign unchecked, utterly above the law, above other human beings, above nature, and above God Himself.

If I sound like a broken record in making this point day after day, year after year, it is because people are still refusing to learn their lessons; not merely about Trump, but about so many things besides. And I guarantee that whatever brings about the next pandemic, the next shutdowns, and the like, people will handle it every bit as badly as they did in 2020, if not worse. At the very least, one would have thought that a renewed emphasis on hand-washing, or on the most basic hygiene — such as covering one’s mouth when coughing! — might have endured. But not even that. #Murica

Germany steps up in the fight against Putin, reverses ban on weapon sales to Ukraine and announces it will support SWIFT banking restrictions on Russia

AP/Christoph Schmidt/dpa

At this time 80 years ago, Germany was the aggressor. Today, it is arguably the leader of the free world; a peaceful, prosperous, and responsible nation. Could Russia ever make that same transition? There were high hopes at the end of the Cold War, but those have been gradually shattered as Vladimir Putin came to power and set about restoring the empire. Germany’s redemption was due, in large part, to the strong character and work ethic of the German people (full disclosure - I am of German blood, so I may be a little biased.) While I do not wish to entirely disparage the Russian people, I’ve seen scant evidence over the years that they possess those same qualities that allowed Germany to successfully rebuild. Indeed, it has been 30 years since the fall of the Soviet Union, but Russia remains a despotic and largely impoverished backwater whose only leverage comes from its large geographic size, its military might (re: nuclear weapons), and its cunning, evil mastermind dictator. Associated Press -

VIENNA (AP) — In a significant shift, the German government said Saturday it will send weapons and other supplies directly to Ukraine, which is fighting to keep Russia from invading its capital city. Germany is also ready to also support some restrictions of the SWIFT global banking system for Russia, officials said.

Germany’s chancellery announced Saturday evening that it will send 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 “Stinger” surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine “as quickly as possible.”

“The Russian invasion of Ukraine marks a turning point. It threatens our entire post-war order,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a statement. “In this situation, it is our duty to help Ukraine, to the best of our ability, to defend itself against Vladimir Putin’s invading army.”

The news came shortly after the German economy and climate ministry said in a Saturday evening statement that Germany is allowing the Netherlands to ship 400 German-made anti-tank weapons to Ukraine. The government has also approved the shipment of 9 D-30 howitzers and ammunition originally from Estonia.

Germany had long stuck to a policy of not exporting deadly weapons to conflict zones, including Ukraine. As recently as Friday, government officials said they would abide by that policy. (Read more)

President Biden orders 2,000 additional troops to European bases, and 8,500 more on alert, as the world waits on edge for Putin to make his move on Ukraine

Mikhail Metzel/Sputnik/AFP/Getty Images

Many Americans bemoan that we are ‘the policeman of the world,’ but if that were not so, Vladimir Putin would have taken over Ukraine years ago. Putin’s end game is restoring the Soviet Union, but that monster must never be allowed to reemerge. Via AP -

BRUSSELS —President Joe Biden is sending about 2,000 troops from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Poland and Germany this week and shifting roughly 1,000 Germany-based soldiers to Romania, a senior administration official said Wednesday.

Biden has said he will not put American troops in Ukraine to fight any Russian incursion, although the United States is supplying Ukraine with weapons to defend itself.

The military moves come amid stalled talks with Russia over its military buildup at Ukraine’s borders. And they underscore growing fears across Europe that Russian President Vladimir Putin is poised to invade Ukraine. Smaller NATO countries on the alliance's eastern flank worry they could be next, although Russia has said it has no intention of initiating conflict and is willing to continue diplomatic efforts.

The administration official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss military moves not yet announced.

Biden had said recently that he intended to provide additional U.S. forces to NATO allies in Eastern Europe as reassurance of an American commitment as treaty allies.

The Pentagon also has put about 8,500 U.S.-based troops on higher alert for possible deployment to Europe as additional reassurance to allies, and officials have indicated the possibility that additional units could be placed on higher alert soon. The U.S. already has between 75,000 and 80,000 troops in Europe as permanently stationed forces and as part of regular rotations in place such as Poland. (Read more)

Grifters laugh all the way to the bank even as they are exposed: ‘Anti-5G’ necklaces found to contain radioactivity

RIVM

The conspiracy theory industry is thriving in these stupid times, and with such an eager customer base it barely even needs the pretense of begin anything but a shameless scam. Anybody on the national populist right can make any insane claim whatsoever, or market whatever junk, and an army of willing little Fascists will be there to defend the lie and demand others believe the lie. The hard resistance to vaccinations, and their devotion to history’s most obvious and blatant conman, proves they are willing to harm themselves in their zeal to hurt others. So why should anybody be surprised they’re buying radioactive ‘anti-5G’ bracelets? From the BBC -
Necklaces and accessories claiming to "protect" people from 5G mobile networks have been found to be radioactive.

The Dutch authority for nuclear safety and radiation protection (ANVS) issued a warning about ten products it found gave off harmful ionising radiation.

It urged people not to use the products, which could cause harm with long-term wear.

There is no evidence that 5G networks are harmful to health.

The World Health Organization says 5G mobile networks are safe, and not fundamentally different from existing 3G and 4G signals.

Mobile networks use non-ionising radio waves that do not damage DNA.

Despite this, there have been attacks on transmitters by people who believe they are harmful. (Read more)

The World Health Organization urges nations not to impose travel bans from southern Africa as new omicron variant spreads

Spencer Platt/Getty Images

It is beyond obvious now that virtually the entire world took their foot off the pedal, so to speak, far too soon. Governments caved to pressure from their restless and malevolent citizenries. Closing America’s borders is the only responsible action at this time, but the WHO appears to care more about public opinion than anything else. -

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The World Health Organization on Sunday urged countries around the world not to impose flight bans on southern African nations due to concerns over the new omicron variant.

WHO’s regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, called on countries to follow science and international health regulations in order to avoid using travel restrictions.

“Travel restrictions may play a role in slightly reducing the spread of COVID-19 but place a heavy burden on lives and livelihoods,” Moeti said in a statement. “If restrictions are implemented, they should not be unnecessarily invasive or intrusive, and should be scientifically based, according to the International Health Regulations, which is a legally binding instrument of international law recognized by over 190 nations.”

Moeti praised South Africa for following international health regulations and informing WHO as soon as its national laboratory identified the omicron variant.

“The speed and transparency of the South African and Botswana governments in informing the world of the new variant is to be commended,” said Moeti. “WHO stands with African countries which had the courage to boldly share life-saving public health information, helping protect the world against the spread of COVID-19.”

Cases of the omicron variant of the coronavirus popped up in countries on opposite sides of the world Sunday and many governments rushed to close their borders even as scientists cautioned that it’s not clear if the new variant is more alarming than other versions of the virus.

While investigations continue into the omicron variant, WHO recommends that all countries “take a risk-based and scientific approach and put in place measures which can limit its possible spread.” (Read more)

Austria implements COVID lockdown for the unvaccinated as cases yet again surge

AP Photo/Lisa Leutner

America has more or less surrendered to the virus, but a few, more enlightened countries are still making an effort to stop the spread. But even in these places, there are malcontents crying about their rights and nationalist politicians eager to appease this ‘freedumb’ constituency. -

BERLIN (AP) — Austria took what its leader called the “dramatic” step Monday of implementing a nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people who haven’t recently had COVID-19, perhaps the most drastic of a string of measures being taken by European governments to get a massive regional resurgence of the virus under control.

The move, which took effect at midnight, prohibits people 12 and older who haven’t been vaccinated or recently recovered from leaving their homes except for basic activities such as working, grocery shopping, going to school or university or for a walk — or getting vaccinated.

The lockdown is initially being imposed until Nov. 24 in the Alpine country of 8.9 million. It doesn’t apply to children under 12 because they cannot yet officially get vaccinated — though the capital, Vienna, on Monday opened up vaccinations for under-12s as part of a pilot project and reported high demand.

Officials say police patrols and checks will be stepped up and unvaccinated people can be fined up to 1,450 euros ($1,660) if they violate the lockdown. (Read more)
