Kyiv woman who had her home burned down by Russian shelling says a relative in Moscow believes the Ukrainians are destroying their own properties on purpose

We are now seeing - in earnest, for the first time since Nazi Germany - the full effects and results of years of gaslighting - how it warps hearts and minds, and ultimately leads to bloodshed and horrific destruction. As for America, the January 6 insurrection, the continuing belligerence shown toward COVID-19 protocol, and the fact everybody wants to tear their neighbors' throats out all merely portend the hell these hate-filled fools are going to unleash upon the earth. It is the biggest nations on said earth – China, India, Russia, and the United States – that are backsliding toward a new level of despotism and are poised to form a new Axis of Evil to rule the planet. Once the domestic Fascist Cabal – agents of Putin, all - get President Biden and his administration out of the way, and once they start liquidating all the ‘undesirables,’ America will have completed its turn from an imperfect bastion of liberty to hellish despot and predator upon humanity. Europe will be eaten alive without any reasonably viable allies in the world (the likes of Australia, Japan, or maybe Canada being able to do much in this scenario are slim.) Is this what we all want for our near-future and for the long-term? Because people sure are acting as if that is what they want. All due to being fed a diet of never-ending grievance, and the innate desire of man that his ignorance must never be questioned but championed instead. Yours truly has plenty of grievances of his own and does not proclaim to know everything, but at least I know better than to hide behind demagogues, or to work to destroy the global order and replace it with something that would ultimately be far worse - a dystopia than these fools cannot conceive of in their little minds.

Over half of Ukrainian children have been displaced by war, Biden lays down the law to Xi, Pope Francis essentially declares Ukrainians should not fight back against the invaders, and what are America’s Putin fans going to do when America is left with no choice but to declare war on Putin?

Alexandros Avramidis/Reuters

NPR: One month of war has displaced more than half of Ukrainian children

A quick google search reveals there are approximately 73 million kids under 18 in the United States. Just try to imagine between 35 and 40 million American kids being forced to trek into Canada (or Mexico) for any given reason. Almost impossible to imagine the horror. But when Americans see Latino children coming across our southern border (and being locked in cages), they either turn away or demand they be sent back. When they see Ukrainian children escaping Putin’s bombs, they either shrug their shoulders or declare ‘fake news.’ Even just ten years ago, this United States of ours was still a humane country overall - in spite of the many warts of history - and its people were by and large good. I do not feel or see that anymore, and it is simply evident that a spirit of darkness has taken hold in our land and around the world. Especially since this time two years ago, when the pandemic began. We are in a time very similar to the 1930s, and we all know what resulted from that. Millions upon millions dead, a genocide of historic proportions that nearly wiped out an entire race of people, nations destroyed and carved to pieces, 45 years of Communist terror in Eastern Europe, and the ever-present threat of nuclear annihilation. World War III may have already started, and when America’s hand is forced and troops must be sent into Eastern Europe, are all these Putin-saluting, ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ saying, tin-foil hat wearing, white supremacist, nationalist populist people going to rally behind their country and the free world? Or will they revolt, finally beginning the long-simmering civil war here at home and preventing the United States from fulfilling its obligations to NATO and to global order? I’m betting on the latter. I’v never been this disgusted with this country and all too many Americans. And if I’m nobody special - and I am not - then I at least see what is happening here and have not sacrificed my humanity.

The Fifth Column of America: Sedition gone more absurd than ever before, as nationalist populist media celebrities and GOP lawmakers come out in favor of Putin’s war of aggression on Ukraine

Dot Records/Matthew Ruffin/Getty Images via Loudwire

Oh, isn’t this cute? The former lead singer of a dreadful ‘nu metal’ band from twenty-some years back who has now gone ‘country’ (he’s from Massachusetts) says Vladimir Putin is fighting ‘for freedom’ from the ‘deep state.’ It’s the rest of us – anyone who doesn’t share their far-right, neo-Fascist worldview - who are the oppressors. Is this really the route the American far-right wants to go, claiming that Putin is a freedom fighter, as many Americans in the 1930s lined up behind Hitler? Well, yes, it is: They’re in a cult (#Cult45) and they’re gradually being brainwashed into wanting to kill anyone and everyone in ‘Murica who isn’t in favor of their nationalist populist, grievance-based, conspiracy-laden agenda. I read ‘1984’ and ‘Animal Farm’ way back in my teenage years, so I always knew Fascism could take hold anywhere, including America. I just never knew it would be quite this absurd. The lead singer of Staind, for crying out loud, to say nothing of Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, Scott Baio, Kristie Alley, James Woods, Kanye West, and the gaggle of celebrity idiots goes on. And now we have members of Congress who fancy themselves entertainers of sort, such as Marjorie Traitor Greene. When this is all over, the rest of us are not going to forget who stood with the free world, and who the coalition of zealots, fools, and psychopaths were that stood for murder, oppression, and lies. Via Rolling Stone -

Vladimir Putin is ramping up his brutal assault on Ukraine, shelling civilians from Odessa to Kharkiv, and leveling the port city of Mariupol — leading President Joe Biden to denounce the Russian dictator as a “war criminal.” But if the initial days of the war were marked by some conservatives muting their admiration for the Russian state, a spate of notorious right-wing figures are now dropping the mask to defend Putin, and even claim his fight as their own.

Over the weekend, former Trump adviser Roger Stone, MAGA media maven Cassandra MacDonald (née Fairbanks), and former Staind rocker Aaron Lewis all spoke out to praise Putin, denounce Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky — or both. This week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene joined the parade, blaming Ukraine for getting itself invaded, while insisting that the war is a lost cause and that Putin is “being very successful” in Ukraine. Then Lara Logan, the former “60 Minutes” correspondent who has her own show on the streaming service Fox Nation, trumped them all, touting Putin as a heroic global actor, declaring: “He’s the man who is standing between us and this New World Order.” (Read more)

America’s president shows steady leadership as Russia’s president wages genocide against the Ukrainian people and unimaginable horror plays out; meanwhile, the American people cry about gas prices and play the blame game. Insights and headlines from another week of war in Ukraine

AP

Working to prevent World War III is a delicate operation, and President Biden is displaying proper leadership during this crisis. Not that very many Americans seem to appreciate it, but thankfully we have a leader who is not going to put fickle public opinion ahead of the lives of the Ukrainian people and global security. Sadly, I’m afraid Ukraine and other vulnerable nations will not be able to count upon America’s help in the future, and Americans are going the way of the Russians. Decaying, mean-spirited, heartless, soulless nationalists and Fascists. I support President Biden because he is essentially the only one standing between us and tyranny, even as most of our fellow Americans and their political idols embrace it. Once he is gone, America is going full-on Nazi, and the world will be an even more dangerous and unpleasant place than we already endure.

I am sensing that most Americans are starting to become annoyed with having to pay attention to the situation in Ukraine, and only want to bitch about gas prices, illegal aliens, and made-up controversies such as Critical Race Theory or the 2020 presidential election being rigged. We can't even be bothered to any longer take precautions against a deadly virus, and shrug our soldiers at nearly one million dead from said virus. We are not a good country, Americans are not good people anymore, by and large, and can no longer be counted upon by anybody.

It is not Americans who fight for freedom anymore - indeed, too many Americans no longer really know what ‘freedom’ actually means. Instead, they embrace mindless populism. Populism is a disease. It is at once a narcissistic belief in one’s superiority, and a persecution complex of never measuring up to others around them. Populism is one desperately screaming, ‘you will respect my willful ignorance, or else.’ Desperate to never be anything other than an idiot, and willing to commit genocide to protect their stupidity. That is where we are at, as is Putin’s Russia. In both cases, it is not going to end well. Russians and Americans really no longer matter, aside from the damage they can and do inflict upon the world: It is the Ukrainian people who are either going to save their nation, Europe, and the world from its most nefarious menace, or they will perish trying. This is their 1776. Слава Україні. Via the New York Times -

WASHINGTON — President Biden will announce sanctions this week on hundreds of members of Russia’s lower house of Parliament, according to a White House official familiar with the announcement, as the United States and its allies reach for even stronger measures to punish President Vladimir V. Putin for his monthlong invasion of Ukraine.

The announcement is scheduled to be made during a series of global summits in Europe on Thursday, when Mr. Biden will press Western leaders for even more aggressive economic actions against Russia as its forces continue to rain destruction on cities in Ukraine.

In Brussels on Thursday, Mr. Biden and other leaders will announce a “next phase” of military assistance to Ukraine, new plans to expand and enforce economic sanctions, and an effort to further bolster NATO defenses along the border with Russia, Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, said on Tuesday. To all the conspiracy theorists and Trumpists out there: I believe one can separate one's hate for the 'new world order' (or 'the left,' what f**king ever) and still recognize Putin is evil and nobody's friend. And that innocent people are victims of genocide. More and more, I'm thinking it's going to take a unified coalition of groups who are not amiable to each other to defeat this monster. Forget all the other non-sense for now, just work to stop Putin. He will destroy humanity, he is serious. Not hyperbole or panic, but reality.

Yuri Gagarin, Tchaikovsky, and vodka: Opposing Putin’s war of aggression on Ukraine without losing perspective, common sense, and humanity

Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. Getty Images

Am about as anti-Russia as it gets, and I would be in favor of removing Russian nationals - those without U.S. citizenship and have not sworn loyalty to America - from our borders while this war on aggression on Ukraine continues. Certainly, few are in the mood to celebrate much about Russia or its history, but can we focus our anger on Putin and his enablers and not on historical figures with no connection to the modern slaughter, please? I’ve seen blurbs about the music of Tchaikovsky being removed (or at least the idea discussed) from the programs of certain orchestras. Russian vodka has been from store shelves all over the place. Believe it or not, some Russians in history have made great art and achieved major milestones, just as multitudes of Germans did long before and long after the Nazi period. Remember, prior to said era, the United States went through a shameless period of anti-German hysteria in World War I, where absurdities like effectively forcing Americans to change their German surnames and renaming sauerkraut as 'liberty cabbage' occurred. Judging by the harrowing state of American society today, that populist idiocy and mass ignorance which are documented daily, I am not certain we have learned very much from those days. It should be possible to the fight the Russians and shame them without losing all perspective and reason, but it will never be possible: Precisely because base human nature is so tribal, so ignorant, and so self-defeating.

Skies ‘turn red’ at Ukrainian military base near Polish border, and Putin grows ever more defiant

BBC

Like many, I’ve been torn on the prospect of a no-fly zone over Ukraine, knowing that will provoke Russia further. After the attack on Yavoriv in the far west of Ukraine, it must be done. Putin wants war with NATO, and I have a sinking feeling we’re not going to be able to avoid it. Via the BBC -

Witnesses to a deadly Russian attack on a Ukrainian military base have told how "the sky turned red" as missiles struck the site near the Polish border.

At least 35 people died in the strike on the Yavoriv training base, near a major crossing point into Poland used by refugees from the conflict.

Russia fired around 30 cruise missiles at the base, outside the city of Lviv, early Sunday, the local governor said.

Hours after the attack, ambulances were still rushing to the scene.

Roads leading to the facility were blocked with checkpoints and authorities were conducting search-and-rescue operations.

Russian jets fired around 30 cruise missiles at the site, also known as the International Peacekeeping and Security Center, authorities in Lviv said. Most, though, were intercepted by the air defence system. (Read more)

Comparing the bravery of the Ukrainians with the long-term cowardice and indifference of the Afghanis is startling

The 9/11 attacks had to be answered and made it necessary to occupy that s**thole for maybe two or three years; but obviously it amounted to far more than a few years, and it is completely shameful America actually spent 20 years trying to help these worthless dirtbags. We should have spent the bulk of that time preventing Russia from ever rising again. More absurd that the American people threw a hissy-fit at President Biden when he did exactly what all prior indications said the American people wanted him to do by pulling out of Afghanistan. And now the entitled pieces of shit give him no credit as he tries to pivot our way out of World War III. Nation of a**holes we are, and I’m getting so sick of it. Still, we couldn’t possibly be any more ungrateful and hateful than the likes of the Afghanis and Russians. At least, I hope not. But I do guarantee, once victory is assured, the Ukrainians will express far more gratitude to the international community and display far more humanity than the Afghan losers could want or to be capable of doing. Seriously, I hate you Afghans and care nothing for what you are going through – you brought it upon yourselves. Ukrainians did no such thing, but since a Democrat is in office, the nationalist populists of America are going to take sides accordingly. They’ll change their tune once one of their own is in high office again. Sometimes I really hate America, and I do not make apologies for it. Do better. Invading Ukraine will be Putin's downfall, and Russia will go down with him

Belarusian soldiers are refusing to fight Ukrainians. There are numerous reports of Russian soldiers surrendering or otherwise going AWOL. Many of these soldiers are barely being fed, and the Russians have had numerous logistical issues in carrying out this invasion. Putin is decimating his own military. But a wounded animal is a dangerous one, and it is unspeakable what he may resort to. Scorched earth. When Hitler knew the war was lost, he issued the ‘Nero Decree,’ ordering all German infrastructure to be destroyed (scuttled by Albert Speer.) Putin will do the same to Russia in due time. And that time may be near.

Putin’s war driving Ukrainians and Russians alike to flee their countries

Konstantin Zavrazhin/Getty Images

More than two million people have fled Ukraine. Amid a brutal crackdown on civil liberties, their military bombing maternity wards, their economy imploding, and the imposition of extreme media censorship, millions will soon be leaving Russia. In fact, it has already started.  -

LONDON — Aglaia woke in the early hours to find that war had begun

Her friend was packing to leave the country, so she rushed to her parents’ house and implored them to do the same.

Aglaia, 23, isn’t from Kyiv, Kharkiv or any other Ukrainian city under attack. She was in St. Petersburg, Russia, more than 500 miles from the fighting

Her relatives are among tens of thousands of people estimated to have escaped the increasingly hard-line oppression meted out by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime as he tries to crush any opposition to his struggling invasion. She asked not to be identified by her last name for fear of reprisals by Russia's state security services if she ever returns home.

With Russia cracking down on dissent and being hit with more international sanctions than Iran and North Korea, some fear a new “Iron Curtain” may be closing as Putin leaves his country deeply isolated both culturally and economically from a scornful world.

“We were very scared,” said Aglaia, a student and activist who managed to get a rare plane ticket Thursday with her family to the Armenian capital, Yerevan, one of the few nearby places where Russian flights aren’t banned. “We just had this feeling of deep, deep sadness — but also mixed with anger.”

The war’s greatest toll has been on Ukraine, where Russian bombs and shells have killed civilians, leveled residential areas and forced more than 2 million people to flee. But it has disfigured the landscape of Russia in a different way.

Younger liberals, like Aglaia, describe a country closing in on itself as the regime wields Orwellian totalitarian tactics so brutal that they outstrip anything seen during Putin’s two decades in power. (Read more)

American mega-corporations cave into pressure to suspend Russian operations

Maxim Zmeyev/Reuters

Let’s be honest, nearly all boycott threats are just that - ‘threats’ that most have no real intention of carrying out. Still, the mere threat of a boycott will usually suffice to pressure governments, corporations, and individuals into compliance with prevailing sentiment. But it took nearly two weeks of receiving intense criticism and two weeks of watching the ongoing carnage in Ukraine to drag, kicking and screaming, major American conglomerates Coca-Cola, Pepsi, McDonald’s, and Starbucks into temporarily suspending (key words) most of their operations in Russia. Lord forbid we ever prevent a Big Mac or a Frappuccino from ever been sold at any given time or place. -

PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Starbucks each said Tuesday they are suspending business in Russia after that country’s invasion of Ukraine, a symbolic move by four iconic U.S. brands.

Pepsi has sold it products in Russia for more than six decades, even when the company had to trade its soda concentrate for Stolichnaya vodka and warships. McDonald’s opened its first location beyond the Iron Curtain in Moscow, just months before the Soviet Union collapsed.

In recent days, Pepsi, Coke, McDonald’s and Starbucks have drawn criticism for continuing to operate in Russia while other U.S. companies announced suspensions and paused sales.

Yale Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld compiled and made public a list of U.S. companies that have withdrawn from Russia following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion — and those that hadn’t. Until Tuesday afternoon, Coke was among the most recognizable names on the spreadsheet.

“Our hearts are with the people who are enduring unconscionable effects from these tragic events in Ukraine,” Coke said in a brief statement Tuesday afternoon. “We will continue to monitor and assess the situation as circumstances evolve.”

Russia represents one of the few regions worldwide where Coke’s rival PepsiCo has a larger presence. In a regulatory filing, Coke said its business in Ukraine and Russia contributed about 1% to 2% of its consolidated net operating revenue and operating income in 2021.

Pepsi, on the other hand, generates roughly 4% of its annual revenue in Russia, though it is not halting all business in the country. The company said it will keep selling some essential products, like baby formula, milk and baby food.

It said it will suspend Russian sales of its Pepsi-Cola, 7UP and Mirinda brands, along with capital investments and all advertising and promotional activities. (Read more)

With support from Congressional Democrats and Republicans both, President Biden announces ban on Russian oil imports

iStock

‘Bipartisan’ doesn’t necessarily translate to ‘popular’ with the general public, but of course banning Russian oil imports is the right move to make at this time. It is a move that is ultimately going to cost President Biden and the members of Congress from both parties politically. At the end of the day the American people care nothing about Ukraine’s plight and only about their ‘right’ to have perpetually cheap oil. Paying more at the pump is painful and I’ve felt that pain, but the amount of whining I’m seeing everywhere given the circumstances is just too much. Americans are not getting pinched as Europeans are, but one wouldn't know it from listening to an average American talk. Far from perfect, but my eyes continue to be opened to how absolutely awful human nature really is – particularly when the group of humans in question have largely been exceptionally privileged and wealthy by historical standards. #StandWithUkraine  -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Striking harder at Russia’s economy, President Joe Biden on Tuesday ordered a ban on Russian oil imports in retaliation for Vladimir Putin’s onslaught in Ukraine. The major trade action, responding to the pleas of Ukraine’s embattled leader, thrust the U.S. out front as Western nations seek to halt Putin’s invasion.

Americans will feel pain, too – at the gas pump – Biden acknowledged, declaring, “Defending freedom is going to cost.”

The imports have been a glaring omission in the massive sanctions put in place on Russia over the invasion. Energy exports have kept a steady stream of cash flowing to Russia despite otherwise severe restrictions on its financial sector.

“We will not be part of subsidizing Putin’s war,” Biden said, calling the new action a “powerful blow” against Russia’s ability to fund the ongoing offensive.

Biden said the U.S. was acting in close consultation with European allies, who are more dependent on Russian energy supplies and who he acknowledged may not be able to join in immediately. The announcement marked the latest Biden attempt at cutting off Russia from much of the global economy and ensuring that the Ukraine invasion is a strategic loss for Putin, even if he manages to seize territory.

“Ukraine will never be a victory for Putin,” Biden said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a tweet praised Biden’s action: “Thankful for US and @POTUS personal leadership in striking in the heart of Putin’s war machine and banning oil, gas and coal from US market. Encourage other countries and leaders to follow.”

The European Union this week will commit to phasing out its reliance on Russia for energy needs as soon as possible, but filling the void without crippling EU economies will likely take some time. The U.K., which is no longer part of the EU, announced Tuesday that oil and oil products from Russia will be phased out by the end of the year.

Unlike the U.S., which is a major oil and gas producer, Europe relies on imports for 90% of its gas and 97% of its oil products. Russia supplies 40% of Europe’s gas and a quarter of its oil. The U.S. does not import Russian natural gas. (Read more)

Vladimir Putin has lost his mind and destroyed his own country, harkening back to the darkest of Soviet times; Russia’s economy likely to become nothing more than ‘a gigantic military factory’

Steve Benson/Arizona Republic

Life in Russia has never been a picnic, but it’s now about to endure a level of tyranny and militarism not seen since Stalin. That is, if Vladimir Putin survives the year without being overthrown. Several possibilities, none of them good for Mother Russia. From Kyiv Independent -

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing economic crisis caused by Western sanctions have already transformed Russia.

The country’s economy is expected to shrink by 20% in the second quarter and by around 3.5% for the full year following intensified sanctions, JPMorgan said on Feb. 28.

However, analysts say that the war is having an even greater impact on Russian society, with the country fast-track turning into a rogue totalitarian state.

There is a major crackdown on dissent, and Russia may also switch to a planned economy similar to the Soviet one.

“The leader becomes a person who never makes mistakes and is always right like the Pope,” Russian political analyst Dmitry Oreshkin told the Echo of Moscow radio station in a reference to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on March 1. (Read more)

These are the actions of a government that is terrified of their public finding out the truths of what is being done in their name, and of learning the real reason why their economy is collapsing. Meanwhile, foreign news sources are being shut down within Russia -

Moscow (AFP)Russian lawmakers moved Friday to impose harsh jail terms for publishing "fake news" about the army, which a senior lawmaker said will apply to foreigners too, as Moscow moves to muffle dissent over its invasion of Ukraine.

The new legislation sets out jail terms of varying lengths and fines against people who publish "knowingly false information" about the military.

"If the fakes led to serious consequences, (the legislation) threatens imprisonment of up to 15 years," the lower house of parliament said in a statement.

Speaking at the session, the head of the head of the parliament's information committee Alexander Khinshtein said the law "concerns all citizens, not only Russian ones, because we are talking about actions against Russia."

Amendments were also passed to fine or jail people calling for sanctions against Russia with jail terms.

The past year has seen an unprecedented crackdown on independent and critical voices in Russia that has intensified since the invasion.

The chairman of parliament Vyacheslav Volodin railed against foreign social media after Facebook was briefly inaccessible in Russia on Friday.

"All these IT companies beginning with Instagram, and ending with the others, are based in the United States of America. It is clear they are used as weapons. They carry hatred and lies. We need to oppose this," he said.

Russia's media watchdog said Friday it had restricted access to the BBC and other independent media websites, further tightening controls over the internet. (Read more)

Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, under assault by the Russians; firefighters unable to put out the flames as they are being shot at

AP
(UPDATE - Zaporizhzhia has fallen)

We are perilously close to World War III. This is on the Russian people now, they must overthrow this lunatic. Starting now. Stop this barbarism at once! #StandWithUkraine

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces shelled Europe’s largest nuclear plant early Friday, sparking a fire as they pressed their attack on a crucial energy-producing Ukrainian city and gained ground in their bid to cut off the country from the sea.

Leading nuclear authorities were concerned — but not panicked — about the damage to the power station. The assault triggered phone calls between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Joe Biden and other world leaders. The U.S. Department of Energy activated its nuclear incident response team as a precaution.

The attack on the eastern city of Enerhodar and its Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant unfolded as the invasion entered its second week and another round of talks between the two sides yielded a tentative agreement to set up safe corridors to evacuate citizens and deliver humanitarian aid.

Nuclear plant spokesman Andriy Tuz told Ukrainian television that shells were falling directly on the facility and had set fire to one of its six reactors. That reactor is under renovation and not operating, but there is nuclear fuel inside, he said.

Firefighters cannot get near the flames because they are being shot at, he said, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted a plea to the Russians to stop the assault and allow fire teams inside. (Read more)

Moscow police arrest small children for peacefully demonstrating against Putin’s war of aggression

Alexandra Arkhipova

Russia is not a country that values its future, it is not a country that prizes free thinking, and it is not a country that practices empathy. We in America are becoming more like them, but that is a topic for another day. From NPR -

They carried flowers, and handmade signs reading "нет войне" — No to War. They tried to leave their message outside Ukraine's embassy in Moscow — and for that, they were arrested.

That's the story emerging in Russia about five children, ages 7 to 11, who went with their mothers to visit the embassy on Tuesday. Their excursion could have served as a reminder of shared humanity, even during a conflict. But police in Moscow didn't see it that way. They detained the kids and parents, putting them in a holding cell.

The police officers shouted at the parents, threatening that the "brave moms" might lose their parental rights, according to Alexandra Arkhipova, who posted photos and a video of the ordeal on her Facebook page

The Moscow children's signs include images of what, for now at least, seems like an impossible equation: a Russian flag followed by a plus sign and a Ukrainian flag, equaling a heart.

The case got the attention of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, who shared images of the children and said it was another sign of the toll Russian President Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine is taking on children.

Referring to Putin as he discussed the kids being detained in Moscow, Kuleba said, "This is how scared the man is." (Read more)

Putin's U.S. propaganda outlet RT America shuts down suddenly

Consider this a victory over Fake News. Via CNBC

The U.S. cable news network RT America informed its employees that it’s halting operations immediately and laying off almost all staff, according to a memo obtained by CNBC.

RT America is an English-language sister network of RT, the Russian state-owned news channel. It’s operated by Russia-backed T&R Productions, which sent a memo Thursday to more than 100 employees informing them their employment will end on May 3, according to a person familiar with the matter.

“As a result of unforeseen business interruption events, T&R Productions LLC will be ceasing production and, therefore, must lay off most of its staff who work at all its locations,” wrote Misha Solodovnikov, T&R Productions’ General Manager, in a note to employees. “We anticipate this lay off will be permanent.” (Read more)

Axis of Evil: Western intelligence services determine that China asked Russia to hold off on Ukraine invasion until Beijing Olympics concluded

Sputnik/Reuters

Putin has consistently courted China and Xi as allies. Xi does not want Russia standing in the way if and when China makes its move on Taiwan. Xi is likely pleased that Putin is testing global outrage – and the limits of the international response – of a such a bold invasion in modern times. Both wish to severely weaken and even all-out destroy America, the European Union, and Western allies, and we’ve known as such for years. So it is not a shock that the Chinese are reported to have had some degree of foreknowledge of Putin’s designs on Ukraine, and perhaps the Russians know something about what Xi may be cooking up. Russia, China, and probably India, Iran, and a handful of lesser aligned powers, are forming a new Warsaw Pact style organization to counter the NATO nations. So long as they wish to destroy the West instead of living in peace with it, this is a marriage of necessity for the belligerents. Russia and China have not always been allies, and are not very likely to always remain in harmony with one another in the long-term. Ukraine is ground zero, and I fear Taiwan will be next, in their unholy war on humanity. And what is the Western world going to do about it, other than taking up arms in a wider war that would almost certainly end all life on this planet? Via the New York Times -

WASHINGTON — A Western intelligence report said senior Chinese officials told senior Russian officials in early February not to invade Ukraine before the end of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, according to senior Biden administration officials and a European official.

The report indicates that senior Chinese officials had some level of direct knowledge about Russia’s war plans or intentions before the invasion started last week. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia met with President Xi Jinping of China in Beijing on Feb. 4 before the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Moscow and Beijing issued a 5,000-word statement at the time declaring that their partnership had “no limits,” denouncing NATO enlargement and asserting that they would establish a new global order with true “democracy.”

The intelligence on the exchange between the Chinese and Russian officials was classified. It was collected by a Western intelligence service and considered credible by officials. Senior officials in the United States and allied governments passed it around as they discussed when Mr. Putin might attack Ukraine.

However, different intelligence services had varying interpretations, and it is not clear how widely the information was shared.

One official familiar with the intelligence said the material did not necessarily indicate the conversations about an invasion took place between Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin. Other officials briefed on the intelligence declined to give further details. The officials spoke about the report on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the intelligence.

Given the close nature of the relationship between Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin, senior Chinese officials are likely to have briefed Mr. Xi on any important exchanges between officials of their nations in the period around the leadership summit, analysts say.

When asked by email on Wednesday whether Chinese officials had urged Russian officials to delay an invasion of Ukraine until after the Olympics, Liu Pengyu, the Chinese Embassy spokesman in Washington, said, “These claims are speculation without any basis, and are intended to blame-shift and smear China.”

China held the closing ceremony of the Olympics on Feb. 20. The next day, Mr. Putin ordered more Russian troops to enter an insurgent-controlled area of eastern Ukraine after state television broadcast a meeting between him and his national security council and, separately, a furious speech in which he said Ukraine should be a part of Russia. Early on Feb. 24, the Russian military began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, including carrying out attacks on cities with ballistic missiles, artillery and tanks. (Read more)

House January 6th Committee determines that Trump was part of criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election

Jim Bourg/Reuters

While the world focuses on Ukraine – as we must – the January 6th Committee is continuing its work. In an ideal world, Trump would be in a Siberian gulag by now. What am I saying, though? If this were an ideal world, the son-of-a-bitch would never have existed to start with. Lock him up. -

(CNN) Former President Donald Trump and a right-wing lawyer were part of a "criminal conspiracy" to overturn the 2020 presidential election, the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot alleges in a court filing Wednesday.

The filing is part of an attempt to convince a judge to allow the panel access to emails from lawyer John Eastman, who is claiming attorney-client privilege. The committee said he helped to orchestrate the plot.

The filing is the most extensive release to date from the House's January 6 investigators as they try to obtain Eastman's emails -- and comes well before the House select committee releases its final report on its findings on Trump. House members have also signaled they may make a criminal referral to the Justice Department about Trump, depending on their findings, and the House's arguments Wednesday could be seen as a preview of a case that could be made by federal prosecutors.

In the 61-page court filing on Wednesday, lawyers for the House wrote: "Evidence and information available to the Committee establishes a good-faith belief that Mr. Trump and others may have engaged in criminal and/or fraudulent acts, and that Plaintiff's legal assistance was used in furtherance of those activities."

Eastman and Trump have not been accused of any crime by federal or state prosecutors, and no top advisers around Trump have been charged for January 6-related crimes.

The House has no ability to bring criminal charges. A judge overseeing the civil lawsuit will review the emails himself and decide whether they should stay protected. (Read more)

For once, a reason for (extremely) cautious optimism in dark times: A global united front emerges against Putin’s war of aggression on Ukraine

AP/Bernat Armangue

When one considers all the turmoil in the world and in our lives in recent times – COVID, rising political extremism, inflation and economic stagnation, climate change, and that is only the tip of the iceberg – it is something of a minor miracle that we are seeing such an overwhelming global response against Vladimir Putin and for the people of Ukraine from governments, corporations, media, and ordinary individuals. Truly, I have largely lost all faith in people – most of all, in fellow Americans - after the last several years, and I’m not declaring it restored now; only that there is a degree of encouragement in the moment. Prayers for Kyiv: Large Russian convoy approaches the Ukrainian capital with stated goal of attacking intelligence and security installations, but large numbers of Russian troops are said to be surrendering ‘without a fight’

Reuters

The true state of the Russian military is being exposed for all the world to see, and this is not the Red Army of World War II by any stretch. (NOTE: It is impossible to document all of the concurrent developments that have been rapidly unfolding in Ukraine, and my primary purpose in keeping this blog – knowing I’m never going to make a cent from it – is for documentation of the times we are living in. This is a one-man operation. Frankly, for most of the past few days I’ve been watching coverage almost non-stop – not a moment of it via the trash cable news networks we have in the United States, but European sources such as Sky News, BBC, DW, and France 24 – and am a bit too overwhelmed to be saying much. Then again, compared to what the Ukrainian people are going through, it is a good problem to have. #StandWithUkraine.) Sky News reports -

Russia has told people in Kyiv to leave their homes ahead of strikes on key intelligence targets - as the US said Moscow's advance on the Ukrainian capital had "stalled", with some units surrendering to President Zelenskyy's troops "without a fight".

Russia's defence ministry said on Tuesday its forces will target the Security Service of Ukraine and the 72nd Center for Information and Psychological Operations (PSO) with strikes.

The defence ministry added the attacks will be designed to "thwart informational attacks against Russia".

"We urge Ukrainian citizens involved by Ukrainian nationalists in provocations against Russia, as well as Kyiv residents living near relay stations, to leave their homes."

The warning comes as a senior US official reportedly said Russia's attack on Kyiv has "stalled", with some units "surrendering without a fight" to Ukrainian troops.

The official anonymously told US media on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces have come up against several logistical issues as they continue to struggle to take control of Kyiv.

Some units are even running out of food and fuel, the official told CNN.

They added that Russia's advance on Kyiv remains stuck "where it was yesterday". (Read more
